Lead-Free Double Perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6: Fundamentals, Applications, and Perspectives

Lead-free silver-bismuth semiconductors have become increasingly popular materials for optoelectronic applications, building upon the success of lead halide perovskites. In these materials, charge-lattice couplings fundamentally determine charge transport, critically affecting device performance. In this study, we investigate the optoelectronic properties of the recently discovered lead-free semiconductor Cu2AgBiI6 using temperature-dependent photoluminescence, absorption, and optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. We report ultrafast charge-carrier localization effects, evident from sharp THz photoconductivity decays occurring within a few picoseconds after excitation and a rise in intensity with decreasing temperature of long-lived, highly Stokes-shifted photoluminescence. We conclude that charge carriers in Cu2AgBiI6 are subject to strong charge-lattice coupling. However, such small polarons still exhibit mobilities in excess of 1 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room temperature because of low energetic barriers to formation and transport. Together with a low exciton binding energy of ∼29 meV and a direct band gap near 2.1 eV, these findings highlight Cu2AgBiI6 as an attractive lead-free material for photovoltaic applications.

Charge-Carrier Mobility and Localization in Semiconducting Cu2AgBiI6 for Photovoltaic Applications.

Understanding and tailoring the physical behaviour of halide perovskites under practical environments is critical for designing efficient and durable optoelectronic devices. Here, we report that continuous light illumination leads to >1% contraction in the out-of-plane direction in two-dimensional hybrid perovskites, which is reversible and strongly dependent on the specific superlattice packing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that constant light illumination results in the accumulation of positive charges in the terminal iodine atoms, thereby enhancing the bonding character of inter-slab I–I interactions across the organic barrier and activating out-of-plane contraction. Correlated charge transport, structural and photovoltaic measurements confirm that the onset of the light-induced contraction is synchronized to a threefold increase in carrier mobility and conductivity, which is consistent with an increase in the electronic band dispersion predicted by first-principles calculations. Flux-dependent space-charge-limited current measurement reveals that light-induced interlayer contraction activates interlayer charge transport. The enhanced charge transport boosts the photovoltaic efficiency of two-dimensional perovskite solar cells up to 18.3% by increasing the device’s fill factor and open-circuit voltage. Light-induced contraction in the out-of-plane direction in two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites enables the realization of high-efficiency 2D perovskite solar cells.

Light-activated interlayer contraction in two-dimensional perovskites for high-efficiency solar cells.

Quasi two-dimensional halide perovskites (also known as Ruddlesden-Popper or RPs) are the most recent and exciting evolution in the perovskite field. Possessing a unique combination of enhanced moisture and material stability, whilst retaining the excellent optoelectronic properties, RPs are poised to be a game changer in the perovskite field. Spurred by their recent achievements in solar cells, light-emitting diodes and spintronic devices, these materials have garnered a mounting interest. Herein, we critically review the photophysics of RPs and distill the science behind their structure–property relations. We first focus on their structure and morphology by highlighting the crucial role of large cations: dictating the RPs' layered structure and the statistical distribution of thicknesses (i.e., n-phases). Next, we discuss how optoelectronic properties of RPs differ from conventional halide perovskites. Structural disorder, stronger excitonic, and polaronic interaction shape the nature of photo-excitations and their fate. For example, faster recombinations and hindered transport are expected for charge carriers in thinner n-phases. However, the complex energetic landscape of RPs, which originates from the coexistence of different n-phases, allows for funneling of energy and charges. Presently, the photophysics of RPs is still nascent, with many recent exciting discoveries from coherence effects in the above-mentioned funneling cascade to spin effects. Giant Rashba spin–orbit coupling, also observed in RPs, dictates their spin dynamics and provides exciting spintronics opportunities. To leverage these propitious RPs, future research must entail a cross-disciplinary approach. While materials engineering will unlock new chiral RPs and Dion-Jacobson variants, novel characterization techniques such as in situ synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction, ultrafast electron microscopy, and multidimensional electronic spectroscopy, etc., are essential in unraveling their secrets and unleashing their full potential.

The photophysics of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites : a tale of energy, charges, and spins

Bismuth-based double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 is regarded as a potential candidate for low-toxicity, high-stability perovskite solar cells. However, its performance is far from satisfactory. Albeit being an indirect bandgap semiconductor, we observe bright emission with large bimolecular recombination coefficient (reaching 4.5 ± 0.1 × 10−11 cm3 s−1) and low charge carrier mobility (around 0.05 cm2 s−1 V−1). Besides intermediate Frohlich couplings present in both Pb-based perovskites and Cs2AgBiBr6, we uncover evidence of strong deformation potential by acoustic phonons in the latter through transient reflection, time-resolved terahertz measurements, and density functional theory calculations. The Frohlich and deformation potentials synergistically lead to ultrafast self-trapping of free carriers forming polarons highly localized on a few units of the lattice within a few picoseconds, which also breaks down the electronic band picture, leading to efficient radiative recombination. The strong self-trapping in Cs2AgBiBr6 could impose intrinsic limitations for its application in photovoltaics.

Strong self-trapping by deformation potential limits photovoltaic performance in bismuth double perovskite

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites (RPP) have recently emerged as a prospective material system for optoelectronic applications. Their self-assembled multi quantum-well structure gives rise to the novel interwell energy funnelling phenomenon, which is of broad interests for photovoltaics, light-emission applications, and emerging technologies (e.g., spintronics). Herein, we develop a realistic finite quantum-well superlattice model that corroborates the hypothesis of exciton delocalization across different quantum-wells in RPP. Such delocalization leads to a sub-50 fs coherent energy transfer between adjacent wells, with the efficiency depending on the RPP phase matching and the organic large cation barrier lengths. Our approach provides a coherent and comprehensive account for both steady-state and transient dynamical experimental results in RPPs. Importantly, these findings pave the way for a deeper understanding of these systems, as a cornerstone crucial for establishing material design rules to realize efficient RPP-based devices.
