Journal ArticleDOI
The 2019/20 Australian wildfires generated a persistent smoke-charged vortex rising up to 35 km altitude
Sergey Khaykin,Bernard Legras,Silvia Bucci,Pasquale Sellitto,Lars Isaksen,Florent Tence,Slimane Bekki,Adam Bourassa,Landon Rieger,Daniel Zawada,Julien Jumelet,Sophie Godin-Beekman +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the resulting planetary-scale blocking of solar radiation by the smoke is larger than any previously documented wildfires and of the same order as the radiative forcing produced by moderate volcanic eruptions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stratospheric Smoke With Unprecedentedly High Backscatter Observed by Lidars Above Southern France
Sergey Khaykin,Sophie Godin-Beekmann,Alain Hauchecorne,Jacques Pelon,François Ravetta,Philippe Keckhut +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors use space-borne CALIPSO lidar to track the spatiotemporal evolution of the smoke plumes before their detection at OHP and extrapolate the OHP observations to a regional scale.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydration of the lower stratosphere by ice crystal geysers over land convective systems
Sergey Khaykin,Jean-Pierre Pommereau,L. Korshunov,Vladimir Yushkov,Johannes K. Nielsen,Niels Larsen,T. Christensen,Anne Garnier,A. Lukyanov,Earle Williams +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the possible impact of deep convective overshooting over land by six simultaneous soundings of water vapour, particles and ozone in the lower stratosphere next to Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) during the monsoon season over West Africa in Niamey, Niger in 2006.
Journal ArticleDOI
The AquaVIT-1 intercomparison of atmospheric water vapor measurement techniques
David W. Fahey,Ru-Shan Gao,Ottmar Möhler,Harald Saathoff,Christoph Schiller,Volker Ebert,Volker Ebert,Martina Krämer,Thomas Peter,Nadir Amarouche,L. Avallone,L. Avallone,R. Bauer,Zoltán Bozóki,Lance E. Christensen,Sean M. Davis,Sean M. Davis,Georges Durry,Christoph Dyroff,Robert L. Herman,S. Hunsmann,Sergey Khaykin,P. Mackrodt,Jessica Meyer,Jessica B. Smith,Nicole Spelten,R. F. Troy,Holger Vömel,Holger Vömel,Steven Wagner,Frank G. Wienhold +30 more
TL;DR: The AquaVIT-1 intercomparison of atmospheric water vapor measurement techniques was conducted at the aerosol and cloud simulation chamber AIDA (Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, in October 2007.
Journal ArticleDOI
An introduction to the SCOUT-AMMA stratospheric aircraft, balloons and sondes campaign in West Africa, August 2006: rationale and roadmap
Francesco Cairo,Jean-Pierre Pommereau,Kathy S. Law,Hans Schlager,Anne Garnier,Federico Fierli,Manfred Ern,M. Streibel,Sylwester Arabas,Stephan Borrmann,Jean-Jacques Berthelier,C. E. Blom,T. Christensen,Francesco D'Amato,G. Di Donfrancesco,Terry Deshler,Arona Diedhiou,Georges Durry,Ola Engelsen,Florence Goutail,Neil R. P. Harris,Erik Kerstel,Sergey Khaykin,Paul Konopka,Arve Kylling,Niels Larsen,Thierry Lebel,X. M. Liu,A. R. MacKenzie,Johannes K. Nielsen,A. Oulanowski,Douglas J. Parker,Jacques Pelon,Jan Polcher,John A. Pyle,Fabrizio Ravegnani,E. D. Rivière,Andrew Robinson,Thomas Röckmann,Cornelius Schiller,Fernando Simões,Leopoldo Stefanutti,Fred Stroh,L. Some,Peter Siegmund,N. Sitnikov,Jean-Paul Vernier,C. M. Volk,Christiane Voigt,M. von Hobe,Silvia Viciani,Vladimir Yushkov +51 more
TL;DR: A multi-platform field measurement campaign involving aircraft and balloons took place over West Africa between 26 July and 25 August 2006, in the frame of the concomitant AMMA Special Observing Period and SCOUT-O3 African tropical activities as discussed by the authors.
