In utero human intestine harbors unique metabolome, including bacterial metabolites

TL;DR: It is hypothesize that these microbial-associated metabolites either come from the maternal microbiome and are vertically transmitted to the fetus to prime the fetal immune system and prepare the gastrointestinal tract for postnatal microbial encounters or are produced locally by bacteria that were below the detection threshold.
Journal ArticleDOI

Alterations of the salivary and fecal microbiome in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis

TL;DR: The salivary microbial signature of PSC was significantly altered as compared to healthy controls, independent of concomitant IBD, and was comprised of 19 significantly altered species, of which, eight species were consistently overrepresented in both fecal and saliva of patients with PSC, including Veillonella, Scardovia and Streptococcus.

Autophagy controls mucus secretion from intestinal goblet cells by alleviating ER stress

TL;DR: It is found that constitutive activation of autophagy in mice via Beclin 1 led to production of a thicker and less penetrable mucus layer by reducing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, while Autophagy maintains proper mucus secretion and intestinal homeostasis by relieving ER stress.

Salmonella manipulates the host to drive pathogenicity via induction of interleukin 1β

TL;DR: In this paper , the role of IL-1β in intestinal defense against Salmonella infection was investigated and it was shown that IL-β production is detrimental during Salmonellosis.
