An overview of ecological status, vulnerability and future perspectives of European large shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems, lagoons and transitional waters
Alice Newton,John Icely,Sónia Cristina,Ana C. Brito,Ana Cristina Cardoso,Franciscus Colijn,Simona Dalla Riva,Flemming Gertz,Jens Würgler Hansen,Marianne Holmer,Kateryna Ivanova,Erkki Leppäkoski,Donata Melaku Canu,Chiara Mocenni,Stephen M. Mudge,Nicholas Murray,Morten Pejrup,Arturas Razinkovas,Sofia Reizopoulou,Angel Pérez-Ruzafa,Gerard Schernewski,Hendrik Schubert,Laishalla Carr,Cosimo Solidoro,PierluigiViaroli,J.M. Zaldívar +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, an overview of some of the large, shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems (SECS) in Europe is given, which are important both from the ecological and the economic perspective (socio-ecological systems) and provide many valuable ecosystem goods and services.
Journal ArticleDOI
Temperature and salinity regimes in a shallow, mesotidal lagoon, the Ria Formosa, Portugal
Alice Newton,Stephen M. Mudge +1 more
TL;DR: In a recent study of the mesotidal Ria Formosa, a coastal lagoon in southern Portugal, water temperature in the channels ranged from 12 to 27°C in winter and salinity from 13 to 36.5, although much higher values were observed in saltpans as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lipid biomarkers in the Conwy Estuary (North Wales, U.K.): a comparison between fatty alcohols and sterols
Stephen M. Mudge,Clare E. Norris +1 more
TL;DR: Analysis of the data indicates that a clearer separation of the geochemical sources can be seen with the sterols and suggests that the fatty alcohol provide more information on secondary processes rather than primary origins.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lagoon-sea exchanges, nutrient dynamics and water quality management of the Ria Formosa (Portugal)
Alice Newton,Stephen M. Mudge +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, historical data from the Ria Formosa lagoon are classified according to the EEA 2001 guidelines to provide a frame of reference to evaluate the effect of management during the implementation of the environmental legislative directives.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stimulating the Biodegradation of Crude Oil with Biodiesel Preliminary Results
Stephen M. Mudge,Gloria Pereira +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, water soluble components were washed through the sand columns and these components subsequently precipitated with cold storage, and the sediments after four weeks were black in colour due to the precipitation of metal sulphides although no H 2 S was generated because the pH of the seawater kept the sulphides in solution.
