An overview of ecological status, vulnerability and future perspectives of European large shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems, lagoons and transitional waters
Alice Newton,John Icely,Sónia Cristina,Ana C. Brito,Ana Cristina Cardoso,Franciscus Colijn,Simona Dalla Riva,Flemming Gertz,Jens Würgler Hansen,Marianne Holmer,Kateryna Ivanova,Erkki Leppäkoski,Donata Melaku Canu,Chiara Mocenni,Stephen M. Mudge,Nicholas Murray,Morten Pejrup,Arturas Razinkovas,Sofia Reizopoulou,Angel Pérez-Ruzafa,Gerard Schernewski,Hendrik Schubert,Laishalla Carr,Cosimo Solidoro,PierluigiViaroli,J.M. Zaldívar +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, an overview of some of the large, shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems (SECS) in Europe is given, which are important both from the ecological and the economic perspective (socio-ecological systems) and provide many valuable ecosystem goods and services.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing, quantifying and valuing the ecosystem services of coastal lagoons
Alice Newton,Ana C. Brito,John Icely,Valerie Derolez,Inês Clara,Stewart Angus,Gerald Schernewski,Miguel Inácio,Ana I. Lillebø,Ana I. Sousa,Béchir Béjaoui,Cosimo Solidoro,Marko Tosic,Miguel Cañedo-Argüelles,Miguel Cañedo-Argüelles,Masumi Yamamuro,Sofia Reizopoulou,Hsiao-Chun Tseng,Hsiao-Chun Tseng,Donata Melaku Canu,Leonilde Roselli,Mohamed Maanan,Sónia Cristina,Ana Carolina Ruiz-Fernández,Ricardo Franco de Lima,Björn Kjerfve,Nadia Rubio-Cisneros,Angel Pérez-Ruzafa,Concepción Marcos,Roberto Pastres,Fabio Pranovi,Maria Snoussi,Jane Turpie,Yurii Tuchkovenko,Brenda Dyack,Justin D. Brookes,Ramunas Povilanskas,Valeriy Khokhlov +37 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assessed, quantified and valued the ecosystem services of 32 coastal lagoons and found that the definitions of ecosystem services are still not generally accepted, and the quantification of ecosystem service is made in many different ways, using different units.
Journal ArticleDOI

Simis,Kremena Stefanova,Christian Wilson,Marco Lo Martire,Silvestro Greco,Sabine Cochrane,Olga Mangoni,Ángel Borja +37 more
TL;DR: Several recently developed methodologies and technologies to improve marine biodiversity indicators and monitoring methods can present clear advantages in accuracy, efficiency and cost.
Journal ArticleDOI
Anthropogenic, Direct Pressures on Coastal Wetlands
Alice Newton,John Icely,Sónia Cristina,G E Perillo,R. Eugene Turner,Dewan Ahsan,Simon M. Cragg,Yong-Ming Luo,Tu Chen,Yuan Li,Haibo Zhang,Ramachandran Ramesh,Donald L. Forbes,Cosimo Solidoro,Béchir Béjaoui,Shu Gao,Roberto Pastres,Heath Kelsey,Dylan Taillie,Nguyen H. Nhan,Ana C. Brito,Ricardo Franco de Lima,Claudia Kuenzer +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, the main economic sectors and activities in and around the coastal wetlands and their catchments exert multiple pressures that affect the state of the wetlands and the delivery of valuable ecosystem services.
Journal ArticleDOI
Time series analysis of data for sea surface temperature and upwelling components from the southwest coast of Portugal
Priscila Goela,Priscila Goela,Clara Cordeiro,Clara Cordeiro,Sergei Danchenko,Sergei Danchenko,John Icely,Sónia Cristina,Sónia Cristina,Alice Newton +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared sea surface temperature (SST) to the upwelling conditions off the southwest coast of Portugal using statistical analyses of publically available data and found that a statistically significant incremental increase in SST was more pronounced during the last decade.
