Journal ArticleDOI
Towards data-driven next-generation transmission electron microscopy.
Steven R. Spurgeon,Colin Ophus,Lewys Jones,Amanda K. Petford-Long,Sergei V. Kalinin,Matthew J. Olszta,Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski,Norman Salmon,Khalid Hattar,Wei-Chang Yang,Renu Sharma,Yingge Du,Ann N. Chiaramonti,Haimei Zheng,Edgar C. Buck,Libor Kovarik,R. Lee Penn,Dongsheng Li,Xin Zhang,Mitsuhiro Murayama,Mitra L. Taheri +20 more
TL;DR: The open, highly integrated and data-driven microscopy architecture needed to realize transformative discoveries in the coming decade is discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Polarization screening-induced magnetic phase gradients at complex oxide interfaces
Steven R. Spurgeon,Prasanna V. Balachandran,Despoina M. Kepaptsoglou,Anoop R. Damodaran,J. Karthik,Siamak Nejati,Lewys Jones,Hailemariam Ambaye,Valeria Lauter,Quentin M. Ramasse,Kenneth K. S. Lau,Lane W. Martin,Lane W. Martin,James M. Rondinelli,Mitra L. Taheri +14 more
TL;DR: This study establishes a framework to understand the fundamental asymmetries of magnetoelectric coupling in oxide heterostructures and presents direct, local measurements of valence, ferroelectric polarization and magnetization, from which to map the phases at the LSMO/PZT interface.
Journal ArticleDOI
One-Pot Aqueous Synthesis of Fe and Ag Core/Shell Nanoparticles
Kyler J. Carroll,Daniel M. Hudgins,Steven R. Spurgeon,Kennneth M. Kemner,Bhoopesh Mishra,Maxim I. Boyanov,Lester W. Brown,Mitra L. Taheri,Everett E. Carpenter +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, a facile one-pot method for the synthesis of Fe and Ag core/shell nanoparticles by aqueous reduction under ambient conditions is proposed. But the method is not suitable for the case of high temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Magnetic properties of Co2C and Co3C nanoparticles and their assemblies
Kyler J. Carroll,Zachary J. Huba,Steven R. Spurgeon,Meichun Qian,Shiv N. Khanna,Daniel M. Hudgins,Mitra L. Taheri,Everett E. Carpenter +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the role of C intercalation on enhancing the magnetic anisotropy of the individual phases of a Co2C and Co3C nanoparticles has been investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thickness-dependent crossover from charge- to strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in ferromagnetic/piezoelectric oxide heterostructures.
Steven R. Spurgeon,Jennifer D. Sloppy,Despoina M. Kepaptsoglou,Prasanna V. Balachandran,Siamak Nejati,Siamak Nejati,J. Karthik,Anoop R. Damodaran,CL Johnson,Hailemariam Ambaye,R. Goyette,Valeria Lauter,Quentin M. Ramasse,Juan Carlos Idrobo,Kenneth K. S. Lau,Samuel E. Lofland,James M. Rondinelli,Lane W. Martin,Mitra L. Taheri +18 more
TL;DR: Direct, local measurements of strain- and charge-mediated magnetization changes in the La0.3MnO3/PbZr0.8O3 system are reported and it is suggested that this local coupling and magnetization suppression may be tuned by controlling the manganite and ferroelectric layer thicknesses, with direct implications for device applications.
