Journal ArticleDOI
Monoenergetic beams of relativistic electrons from intense laser–plasma interactions
Stuart Mangles,C. D. Murphy,C. D. Murphy,Zulfikar Najmudin,Alexander Thomas,John Collier,A. E. Dangor,E. J. Divall,Peta Foster,J. G. Gallacher,C. J. Hooker,Dino A. Jaroszynski,A. J. Langley,Warren Mori,Peter Norreys,Frank Tsung,R. Viskup,B. Walton,Karl Krushelnick +18 more
TL;DR: High-resolution energy measurements of the electron beams produced from intense laser–plasma interactions are reported, showing that—under particular plasma conditions—it is possible to generate beams of relativistic electrons with low divergence and a small energy spread.
Journal ArticleDOI
Electron Acceleration by a Wake Field Forced by an Intense Ultrashort Laser Pulse
Victor Malka,Sven Fritzler,Erik Lefebvre,M. M. Aléonard,Frédéric Burgy,Jean-Paul Chambaret,J. F. Chemin,Karl Krushelnick,G. Malka,Stuart Mangles,Zulfikar Najmudin,M. Pittman,Jean-Philippe Rousseau,J. N. Scheurer,B. Walton,A. E. Dangor +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a gain in maximum electron energy of up to 200 megaelectronvolts can be achieved, along with an improvement in the quality of the ultrashort electron beam in the forced laser wake field regime.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bright spatially coherent synchrotron X-rays from a table-top source
Stefan Kneip,Christopher McGuffey,Joana Luis Martins,Samuel Martins,C. Bellei,Vladimir Chvykov,Franklin Dollar,Ricardo Fonseca,Ricardo Fonseca,C. Huntington,Galina Kalintchenko,Anatoly Maksimchuk,Stuart Mangles,Takeshi Matsuoka,S. R. Nagel,Charlotte Palmer,Jörg Schreiber,K. Ta Phuoc,Alexander Thomas,Victor Yanovsky,Luis O. Silva,Karl Krushelnick,Zulfikar Najmudin +22 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate that the intensity of these X-rays can be as bright as that generated by conventional third-generation synchrotrons, in a device a fraction of the size and cost.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental Evidence of Radiation Reaction in the Collision of a High-Intensity Laser Pulse with a Laser-Wakefield Accelerated Electron Beam
Jason Cole,K. Behm,E. Gerstmayr,Tom Blackburn,J. C. Wood,C. D. Baird,M. J. Duff,Christopher Harvey,Antony Ilderton,Archis Joglekar,Karl Krushelnick,S. Kuschel,Mattias Marklund,Paul McKenna,C. D. Murphy,Kristjan Poder,Christopher Ridgers,G. M. Samarin,Gianluca Sarri,Dan Symes,Alexander Thomas,Alexander Thomas,J. Warwick,Matthew Zepf,Matthew Zepf,Matthew Zepf,Zulfikar Najmudin,Stuart Mangles +27 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured an energy loss in the postcollision electron spectrum that is correlated with the detected signal of hard photons (gamma rays), consistent with a quantum description of radiation reaction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Generation of neutral and high-density electron-positron pair plasmas in the laboratory
Gianluca Sarri,Kristjan Poder,Jason Cole,William Schumaker,A. Di Piazza,Brian Reville,Thomas Dzelzainis,Domenico Doria,Leonida A. Gizzi,G. Grittani,Satyabrata Kar,Christoph H. Keitel,Karl Krushelnick,S. Kuschel,Stuart Mangles,Zulfikar Najmudin,Nitin Shukla,Luis O. Silva,Dan Symes,Alexander Thomas,M. Vargas,Jorge Vieira,Matthew Zepf +22 more
TL;DR: It is shown that, by using a compact laser-driven setup, ion-free electron–positron plasmas with unique characteristics can be produced, and their charge neutrality, high-density and small divergence finally open up the possibility of studying electron– Positron Plasmas in controlled laboratory experiments.
