Journal ArticleDOI
Autophagy is cytoprotective during cisplatin injury of renal proximal tubular cells
Sudharsan Periyasamy-Thandavan,Man Jiang,Qingqing Wei,Robert M. Smith,Xiao Ming Yin,Zheng Dong,Zheng Dong +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors found that administration of cisplatin induced the formation of autophagic vesicles and autophagosomes in mouse kidneys, and this was partially suppressed by the p53 inhibitor pifithrin-α.
Journal ArticleDOI
SLC6A14 (ATB0,+) Protein, a Highly Concentrative and Broad Specific Amino Acid Transporter, Is a Novel and Effective Drug Target for Treatment of Estrogen Receptor-positive Breast Cancer
Senthil Karunakaran,Sabarish Ramachandran,Veena Coothankandaswamy,Selvakumar Elangovan,Ellappan Babu,Sudharsan Periyasamy-Thandavan,Ashish Gurav,Jaya P. Gnana-Prakasam,Nagendra Singh,Patricia V. Schoenlein,Puttur D. Prasad,Muthusamy Thangaraju,Vadivel Ganapathy +12 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the transporter is up-regulated specifically in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer, demonstrable with primary human breast cancer tissues andhuman breast cancer cell lines, and an effective drug target for the treatment of ER- positive breast cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Autophagy facilitates the progression of ERα-positive breast cancer cells to antiestrogen resistance
Patricia V. Schoenlein,Sudharsan Periyasamy-Thandavan,Julia S. Samaddar,William Hutch Jackson,John T. Barrett +4 more
TL;DR: Analysis of a representative resistant cell line showed an increased ability of the cells to sustain high levels of antiestrogen-induced autophagy without progression to death, and blockade of autophagosome function in the 4-OHT-treated, antiestrogens-resistant cells induced a robust death response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Remote ischemic perconditioning is effective alone and in combination with intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator in murine model of embolic stroke.
Nasrul Hoda,Shahneela Siddiqui,Samuel Herberg,Samuel Herberg,Samuel Herberg,Sudharsan Periyasamy-Thandavan,Kanchan Bhatia,Sherif Hafez,Sherif Hafez,Sherif Hafez,Maribeth H. Johnson,William D. Hill,Adviye Ergul,Susan C. Fagan,Susan C. Fagan,Susan C. Fagan,David C. Hess +16 more
TL;DR: RIPerC is effective alone after embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion and has additive effects in combination with intravenous tPA and may be a simple, safe, and inexpensive combination therapy with intravenously tPA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapamycin up-regulation of autophagy reduces infarct size and improves outcomes in both permanent MCAL, and embolic MCAO, murine models of stroke.
Kathleen M. Buckley,Kathleen M. Buckley,Daniel L Hess,Irina Y Sazonova,Sudharsan Periyasamy-Thandavan,Sudharsan Periyasamy-Thandavan,John R Barrett,Russell C. Kirks,Harrison E. Grace,Galina Kondrikova,Galina Kondrikova,Maribeth H. Johnson,David C. Hess,Patricia V. Schoenlein,Nasrul Hoda,William D. Hill,William D. Hill +16 more
TL;DR: While both inhibition and enhancement of autophagy by pharmacological intervention decreased lesion size and improved neurological scores, the enhancement with rapamycin showed a greater degree of improvement in outcomes as well as in survival.
