Journal ArticleDOI
Randomized Trial of Omalizumab (Anti-IgE) for Asthma in Inner-City Children
William W. Busse,Wayne J. Morgan,Peter J. Gergen,Herman Mitchell,James E. Gern,Andrew H. Liu,Rebecca S. Gruchalla,Meyer Kattan,Stephen J. Teach,Jacqueline A. Pongracic,James F. Chmiel,Suzanne Steinbach,Agustin Calatroni,Alkis Togias,Katherine M. Thompson,Stanley J. Szefler,Christine A. Sorkness +16 more
TL;DR: When added to a regimen of guidelines-based therapy for inner-city children, adolescents, and young adults, omalizumab further improved asthma control, nearly eliminated seasonal peaks in exacerbations, and reduced the need for other medications to control asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inner City Asthma Study: Relationships among sensitivity, allergen exposure, and asthma morbidity
Rebecca S. Gruchalla,Jacqueline A. Pongracic,Marshall Plaut,Richard Evans,Cynthia M. Visness,Michelle Walter,Ellen F. Crain,Meyer Kattan,Wayne J. Morgan,Suzanne Steinbach,James W. Stout,George Malindzak,Ernestine Smartt,Herman Mitchell +13 more
TL;DR: Children who were both sensitive and exposed to cockroach allergen had significantly more asthma symptom days, more caretaker interrupted sleep, and more school days missed than children who were not sensitive or exposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
The emergence of a highly transmissible lineage of cbl+ Pseudomonas (Burkholderia) cepacia causing CF centre epidemics in North America and Britain
Li Sun,Ru-Zhang Jiang,Suzanne Steinbach,Alison Holmes,C. Campanelli,Janet F. Forstner,Uma Sajjan,Ying Tan,Margaret A. Riley,Richard Goldstein +9 more
TL;DR: The first DNA sequence-based documentation of a divergent evolutionary lineage of P. cepacia associated with CF centre epidemics in North America and Europe is provided and the involved epidemic clone encoded and expressed novel cable pili that bind to CF mucin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Asthma control, adiposity, and adipokines among inner-city adolescents.
Meyer Kattan,Rajesh Kumar,Gordon R. Bloomberg,Herman Mitchell,Agustin Calatroni,Peter J. Gergen,Carolyn M. Kercsmar,Cynthia M. Visness,Elizabeth C. Matsui,Suzanne Steinbach,Stanley J. Szefler,Christine A. Sorkness,Wayne J. Morgan,Stephen J. Teach,Vanthaya N. Gan +14 more
TL;DR: Adiposity is associated with poorer asthma control in female subjects and adiponectin isassociated with improved asthma controlIn male subjects, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry provided little additional value in relating adiposity to asthma outcome in this population of adolescents.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA methylation and childhood asthma in the inner city.
Ivana V. Yang,Brent S. Pedersen,Andrew H. Liu,George T. O'Connor,Stephen J. Teach,Meyer Kattan,Rana Tawil Misiak,Rebecca S. Gruchalla,Suzanne Steinbach,Stanley J. Szefler,Michelle A. Gill,Agustin Calatroni,Gloria David,Corinne E. Hennessy,Elizabeth J. Davidson,Weiming Zhang,Peter J. Gergen,Alkis Togias,William W. Busse,David A. Schwartz,David A. Schwartz +20 more
TL;DR: In this article, DNA methylation patterns and gene expression in inner-city children with persistent atopic asthma versus healthy control subjects were compared by using DNA and RNA from PBMCs.
