Community detection in Social Media
TL;DR: This survey first frames the concept of community and the problem of community detection in the context of Social Media, and provides a compact classification of existing algorithms based on their methodological principles, placing special emphasis on the performance of existing methods in terms of computational complexity and memory requirements.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensing Trending Topics in Twitter
Luca Maria Aiello,Georgios Petkos,Carlos Martin,David Corney,Symeon Papadopoulos,R. Skraba,Ayse Göker,Ioannis Kompatsiaris,Alejandro Jaimes +8 more
TL;DR: It is found that standard natural language processing techniques can perform well for social streams on very focused topics, but novel techniques designed to mine the temporal distribution of concepts are needed to handle more heterogeneous streams containing multiple stories evolving in parallel.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bias in data-driven artificial intelligence systems—An introductory survey
Eirini Ntoutsi,Pavlos Fafalios,Ujwal Gadiraju,Vasileios Iosifidis,Wolfgang Nejdl,Maria-Esther Vidal,Salvatore Ruggieri,Franco Turini,Symeon Papadopoulos,Emmanouil Krasanakis,Ioannis Kompatsiaris,Katharina Kinder-Kurlanda,Claudia Wagner,Fariba Karimi,Miriam Fernandez,Harith Alani,Bettina Berendt,Bettina Berendt,Tina Kruegel,Christian Heinze,Klaus Broelemann,Gjergji Kasneci,Thanassis Tiropanis,Steffen Staab,Steffen Staab,Steffen Staab +25 more
TL;DR: A broad multidisciplinary overview of the area of bias in AI systems is provided, focusing on technical challenges and solutions as well as to suggest new research directions towards approaches well‐grounded in a legal frame.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Comprehensive Study Over VLAD and Product Quantization in Large-Scale Image Retrieval
Eleftherios Spyromitros-Xioufis,Symeon Papadopoulos,Ioannis Kompatsiaris,Grigorios Tsoumakas,Ioannis Vlahavas +4 more
TL;DR: An in-depth analysis of the state-of-the-art framework of VLAD and Product Quantization proposed by Jegou is made, which develops an enhanced framework that significantly outperforms the previous best reported accuracy results on standard benchmarks and is more efficient.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cluster-Based Landmark and Event Detection for Tagged Photo Collections
TL;DR: An image analysis scheme can automate the detection of landmarks and events in large image collections, significantly improving the content-consumption experience.
