Journal ArticleDOI

Carotenoid radical chemistry and antioxidant/pro-oxidant properties.

TL;DR: The purpose of this review is to summarise the current state of knowledge of the kinetics and mechanisms of radical reactions with carotenoids, the properties ofcarotenoid radicals, and the antioxidant/pro-oxidant properties of carOTenoids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Singlet Oxygen Quenching by Dietary Carotenoids in a Model Membrane Environment

TL;DR: The formation of aggregates by the polar carotenoids is proposed to be of significance in their ability to quench singlet oxygen, and their influence on the properties of the lipid membrane is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Blue light-induced singlet oxygen generation by retinal lipofuscin in non-polar media.

TL;DR: The results indicate the potential role of hydrophobic components of lipofuscin in blue light-induced damage to the RPE and suggest that singlet oxygen generation in non-polar environments is strongly wavelength-dependent.
Journal ArticleDOI

Direct detection of singlet oxygen from isolated Photosystem II reaction centres

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the pool of singlet oxygen detected by steady-state luminescence at 1270 nm and quenched by azide and water is located in the bulk medium rather than in the protein matrix of the reaction centre.
Journal ArticleDOI

Photocytotoxicity of lipofuscin in human retinal pigment epithelial cells.

TL;DR: Exposure of lipofuscin-fed cells to short wavelength visible light caused lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, loss of lysosomal integrity, cytoplasmic vacuolation, and membrane blebbing culminating in cell death.
