Abstract A two-dimensional version of the Pennsylvania State University mesoscale model has been applied to Winter Monsoon Experiment data in order to simulate the diurnally occurring convection observed over the South China Sea. The domain includes a representation of part of Borneo as well as the sea so that the model can simulate the initiation of convection. Also included in the model are parameterizations of mesoscale ice phase and moisture processes and longwave and shortwave radiation with a diurnal cycle. This allows use of the model to test the relative importance of various heating mechanisms to the stratiform cloud deck, which typically occupies several hundred kilometers of the domain. Frank and Cohen's cumulus parameterization scheme is employed to represent vital unresolved vertical transports in the convective area. Numerical study of convection observed during the Winter Monsoon Experiment using a mesoscale two-dimensional model [presentation]

The objective of this research was to examine the influence of the spatial variability of precipitation data from different sources on the accuracy of runoff simulation. In this study, interpolated precipitation by external drift kriging and conditional simulated precipitation based on turning band simulation are used to represent the spatial variability of precipitation. Also, the precipitation is averaged over different spatial scales ranging from 4 km 2 to 614 km 2 . The original and averaged precipitation is used as a main forcing input in a conceptual distributed rainfall-runoff model. An automatic calibration method based on the combinatorial optimization algorithm simulated annealing is applied. Also, the aggregated Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients at different time scales are used as objective function in the study. The simulated hydrographs obtained using original and averaged precipitation are analysed through comparisons of the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient and other goodness-of-fit indexes. By means of them, the influence of spatial variability of precipitation data on the accuracy of simulated runoff is assessed.

Understanding the Asymmetry of Annual Streamflow Responses to Seasonal Warming in the Western United States

Daily microbiological water quality and precipitation data spanning 6 years were collected from monitoring stations at southern California beaches. Daily precipitation projected for the twenty-first century was derived from downscaled CNRM CM3 global climate model. A time series model of Enterococcus concentrations that was driven by precipitation, matched the general trend of empirical water quality data; there was a positive association between precipitation and microbiological water contamination (P < 0.001). Future projections of precipitation result in a decrease in predicted Enterococcus levels through the majority of the twenty-first century. Nevertheless, variability of storminess due to climate change calls for innovative adaptation and surveillance strategies.

Author(s): Cayan, Dan; Tyree, Mary; Pierce, David; Das, Tapash | Abstract: This white paper provides an evaluation of physical elements of climate change and sea level rise that are contained in the California Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation Assessment. The analyses use six global climate models, each run under the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Emissions Scenarios B1 and A2 scenarios. From the global climate models and associated downscaled output, these scenarios contain a range of warming, continued interannual and decadal variation of precipitation with incremental changes by the middle and end of twenty‐first century, substantial loss of mountain snow pack, and a range of sea level rise along the California coast.
