Journal ArticleDOI
The landing(s) of Philae and inferences about comet surface mechanical properties
Jens Biele,Stephan Ulamec,Michael Maibaum,Reinhard Roll,Lars Witte,Eric Jurado,Pablo Muñoz,Pablo Muñoz,Walter Arnold,Hans-Ulrich Auster,Carlos M. Casas,Carlos M. Casas,Claudia Faber,Cinzia Fantinati,Felix Finke,Hans-Herbert Fischer,Koen Geurts,Carsten Güttler,Philip Heinisch,Alain Herique,Stubbe F. Hviid,Günter Kargl,Martin Knapmeyer,Jörg Knollenberg,Wlodek Kofman,Norbert I. Kömle,Ekkehard Kührt,Valentina Lommatsch,Stefano Mottola,Ramon Pardo de Santayana,Ramon Pardo de Santayana,Emile Remetean,Frank Scholten,Klaus J. Seidensticker,Holger Sierks,Tilman Spohn +35 more
TL;DR: The precise circumstances of the multiple landings of Philae, including the bouncing trajectory and rebound parameters, are reported, based on engineering data in conjunction with operational instrument data, which provide information on the mechanical properties of the comet surface.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rosetta Lander - Landing and operations on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Stephan Ulamec,Cinzia Fantinati,Michael Maibaum,Koen Geurts,Jens Biele,Sven Jansen,Oliver Küchemann,Barbara Cozzoni,Felix Finke,Valentina Lommatsch,Aurelie Moussi-Soffys,Cedric Delmas,Laurence O´Rourke +12 more
TL;DR: The Rosetta Lander Philae is part of the ESA Rosetta Mission which reached comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko after a 10 year cruise in August 2014.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rosetta Lander – Philae: Landing preparations☆
Stephan Ulamec,Jens Biele,Alejandro Blazquez,Barbara Cozzoni,Cedric Delmas,Cinzia Fantinati,Philippe Gaudon,Koen Geurts,Eric Jurado,Oliver Küchemann,Valentina Lommatsch,Michael Maibaum,Holger Sierks,Lars Witte +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarized the selection process for a landing site and the planning for separation, descent and landing (SDL) strategy for the Rosetta and Philae land on November 12th and perform in-situ studies of the cometary material.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rosetta Lander-Philae: Operations on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, Analysis of wake-up activities and final state
Stephan Ulamec,Laurence O'Rourke,Jens Biele,B. TL;DR: The Lander Philae, part of the ESA Rosetta mission successfully landing on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on November 12th, 2014, performed a First Scientific Sequence (FSS) based on the energy stored in its on board batteries as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Andres,Bernhard Geiger,Koen Geurts,Stephan Ulamec,Norbert I. Kömle,Valentina Lommatsch,Michael Maibaum,J.L. Pellon,C. Bielsa,Romain Garmier,Matthew Taylor,P. Martin,Michael Küppers,A. Accomazzo,V. Companys,J. P. Bibring,Wlodek Kofman,S. Mckenna Lawlor,Mario Salatti,Philippe Gaudon +32 more
TL;DR: On the 12th of November 2014, the Rosetta Philae Lander descended to make the first soft touchdown on the surface of a comet as mentioned in this paper, but due to the failure in the firing of its two harpoons, Philae bounced and travelled across the comet making contact with the surface twice more before finally landing in a shaded rocky location on the southern hemisphere of the comet.
