Journal ArticleDOI
Vertical T cell immunodominance and epitope entropy determine HIV-1 escape
Michael K. P. Liu,Natalie Hawkins,Adam J. Ritchie,Vitaly V. Ganusov,Victoria E. Whale,Simon Brackenridge,Hui Li,Jeffrey W. Pavlicek,Fangping Cai,Melissa Rose-Abrahams,Florette K. Treurnicht,Peter T. Hraber,Catherine Riou,Clive M. Gray,Guido Ferrari,Rachel Tanner,Li Hua Ping,Jeffrey A. Anderson,Ronald Swanstrom,Myron S. Cohen,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Barton F. Haynes,Persephone Borrow,Alan S. Perelson,Alan S. Perelson,George M. Shaw,Beatrice H. Hahn,Carolyn Williamson,Bette T. Korber,Bette T. Korber,Feng Gao,Steve Self,Andrew J. McMichael,Nilu Goonetilleke +33 more
TL;DR: It is explained how CD8+ T cells can exert significant and sustained HIV-1 pressure even when escape is very slow and that within an individual, the impacts of other T cell factors on HIV- 1 escape should be considered in the context of immunodominance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Distinct Kinetics of Gag-Specific CD4+ and CD8+ T Cell Responses during Acute HIV-1 Infection
Catherine Riou,Vitaly V. Ganusov,Suzanne Campion,Mandla Mlotshwa,Michael K. P. Liu,Victoria E. Whale,Nilu Goonetilleke,Persephone Borrow,Guido Ferrari,Michael R. Betts,Barton F. Haynes,Andrew J. McMichael,Clive M. Gray +12 more
TL;DR: Observations indicated that circulating Gag-responsive CD4+ and CD8+ T cell frequencies and functions are not synchronous, and properties change rapidly at different tempos during early HIV infection.
