Journal ArticleDOI
Monoenergetic beams of relativistic electrons from intense laser–plasma interactions
Stuart Mangles,C. D. Murphy,C. D. Murphy,Zulfikar Najmudin,Alexander Thomas,John Collier,A. E. Dangor,E. J. Divall,Peta Foster,J. G. Gallacher,C. J. Hooker,Dino A. Jaroszynski,A. J. Langley,Warren Mori,Peter Norreys,Frank Tsung,R. Viskup,B. Walton,Karl Krushelnick +18 more
TL;DR: High-resolution energy measurements of the electron beams produced from intense laser–plasma interactions are reported, showing that—under particular plasma conditions—it is possible to generate beams of relativistic electrons with low divergence and a small energy spread.
Journal ArticleDOI
Generating multi-GeV electron bunches using single stage laser wakefield acceleration in a 3D nonlinear regime
Wei Lu,Michail Tzoufras,C. Joshi,Frank Tsung,Warren Mori,Jorge Vieira,Ricardo Fonseca,Luis O. Silva +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a phenomenological framework for laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) in the 3D nonlinear regime was developed, in which the plasma electrons are expelled by the radiation pressure of a short pulse laser, leading to nearly complete blowout.
Book ChapterDOI
OSIRIS: A Three-Dimensional, Fully Relativistic Particle in Cell Code for Modeling Plasma Based Accelerators
Ricardo Fonseca,Luis O. Silva,Frank Tsung,V. K. Decyk,Wei Lu,Chuang Ren,Warren Mori,S. Deng,Sukhan Lee,Tom Katsouleas,J. C. Adam +10 more
TL;DR: Results from three-dimensional simulations of particle and laser wakefield accelerators are presented, in connection with the data analysis and visualization infrastructure developed to post-process the scalar and vector results from PIC simulations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Energy doubling of 42 GeV electrons in a metre-scale plasma wakefield accelerator
I. Blumenfeld,C. E. Clayton,Franz-Josef Decker,Mark Hogan,Chengkun Huang,Rasmus Ischebeck,R. Iverson,Chan Joshi,Tom Katsouleas,Neil Kirby,Wei Lu,K. A. Marsh,Warren Mori,Patric Muggli,Erdem Oz,Robert H. Siemann,Dieter Walz,Miaomiao Zhou +17 more
TL;DR: An energy gain of more than 42 GeV is achieved in a plasma wakefield accelerator of 85 cm length, driven by a 42GeV electron beam at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), in excellent agreement with the predictions of three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nonlinear theory for relativistic plasma wakefields in the blowout regime.
TL;DR: A theory for nonlinear, multidimensional plasma waves with phase velocities near the speed of light is presented, appropriate for describing plasma waves excited when all electrons are expelled out from a finite region by either the space charge of a short electron beam or the radiation pressure of an intense laser.
