Blinded randomised controlled trial of low-dose Adjuvant Steroids in Adults admitted to hospital with Pandemic influenza (ASAP): a trial ‘in hibernation’, ready for rapid activation
Wei Shen Lim,Clare Brittain,Lelia Duley,Sheila Edwards,Stephen B. Gordon,Alan A Montgomery,Jonathan S. Nguyen-Van-Tam,Robert C. Read,Diane Whitham,David K. Whynes,Mark Woodhead,Daniel G. Wootton +11 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrates that advance set-up of a trial to be conducted during a pandemic, with full ethics and regulatory approvals in place, is possible and serves as a model for the development of other 'off-the-shelf' trials as part of preparedness planning for public health emergencies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Time to first antibiotic and mortality in adults hospitalised with community-acquired pneumonia: a matched-propensity analysis
TL;DR: A matched-propensity analysis of national data from the British Thoracic Society community-acquired pneumonia audit found an association between TFA and mortality, but cannot say whether this is causal or whether TFA might just be a quality measure for overall or other processes of care.
Journal ArticleDOI
A care-bundles approach to improving standard of care in AECOPD admissions: results of a national project
TL;DR: The results support wider use of care bundles for AECOPD and demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in mortality and length of hospital stay from some bundle elements.
Posted ContentDOI

Roberts,Richard Haynes,Martin J Landray +35 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 and found that high-titre plasma did not improve survival or other prespecified clinical outcomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
British Thoracic Society community acquired pneumonia guideline and the NICE pneumonia guideline: how they fit together
TL;DR: The British Thoracic Society guideline for the management of adults with community acquired pneumonia (CAP) published in 2009 was compared with the 2014 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Pneumonia Guideline, finding no major differences.
