Journal ArticleDOI
Epidermal langerhans cell depletion after artificial ultraviolet B irradiation of human skin in vivo: apoptosis versus migration.
Wendy Kölgen,Hilde Both,Huib van Weelden,Kees L.H. Guikers,Carla A.F.M. Bruijnzeel-Koomen,Edward F. Knol,Willem A. van Vloten,Frank R. de Gruijl +7 more
TL;DR: Ultraviolet B-induced Langerhans cell disappearance appears to be mainly attributable to migration, and apoptosis and migration are the most likely mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
CD11b+ Cells and Ultraviolet-B-Resistant CD1a+ Cells in Skin of Patients with Polymorphous Light Eruption
Wendy Kölgen,Huib van Weelden,Sarah Den Hengst,Kees L.H. Guikers,Rebecca C.M. Kiekens,Edward F. Knol,Carla A.F.M. Bruijnzeel-Koomen,Willem A. van Vloten,Frank R. de Gruijl +8 more
TL;DR: In 10 patients with polymorphous light eruption, CD1a+ cells were present in the epidermis as well as in the dermis before exposure, and these cells were still present in considerable number at 48 and 72 h after exposure to six minimal erythema doses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential expression of cytokines in UV-B-exposed skin of patients with polymorphous light eruption: correlation with Langerhans cell migration and immunosuppression.
Wendy Kölgen,Marjan van Meurs,Marjan J. Jongsma,Huib van Weelden,Carla A.F.M. Bruijnzeel-Koomen,Edward F. Knol,Willem A. van Vloten,Jon D. Laman,Frank R. de Gruijl +8 more
TL;DR: The reduced expression of TNF-alpha, IL-4, and IL-10 in the UV-B-irradiated skin of patients with PLE appears largely attributable to a lack of neutrophils, and is indicative of reduced Langerhans cell migration and reduced T(H)2 skewing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of Transcription-Coupled Repair but Not Global Genome Repair with Ultraviolet-B-Induced Langerhans Cell Depletion and Local Immunosuppression
Wendy Kölgen,Harry van Steeg,Gijsbertus T. J. van der Horst,Jan H.J. Hoeijmakers,Willem A. van Vloten,Frank R. de Gruijl,Johan Garssen +6 more
TL;DR: It can be concluded that Langerhans cell disappearance is related to ultraviolet-B-induced local but not to systemic immunosuppression, and that local immunOSuppression is only affected when transcription-coupled DNA repair is impaired.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased infiltrate of CD11b+ cells and ultraviolet-B-resistant CD1a+ cells in skin of patients with polymorphic light eruption
