One-third of reef-building corals face elevated extinction risk from climate change and local impacts
Kent E. Carpenter,Muhammad Abrar,Greta S. Aeby,Richard B. Aronson,Stuart Banks,Andrew W. Bruckner,Angel Chiriboga,Jorge Cortés,J. Charles Delbeek,Lyndon DeVantier,Graham J. Edgar,Alasdair J. Edwards,Douglas Fenner,Hector M. Guzman,Bert W. Hoeksema,Gregor Hodgson,Ofri Johan,Wilfredo Y. Licuanan,Suzanne R. Livingstone,Edward R. Sanciangco,Anne Sheppard,Charles Sheppard,Jennifer E. Smith,Simon N. Stuart,Emre Turak,J. E. N. Veron,Carden C. Wallace,Ernesto Weil,Elizabeth Wood +38 more
TL;DR: The Caribbean has the largest proportion of corals in high extinction risk categories, whereas the Coral Triangle has the highest proportion of species in all categories of elevated extinction risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
A review of the status of Philippine reefs
TL;DR: The status of Philippine reefs has been periodically updated while conditions of the reefs during the early surveys were assessed in terms of live coral cover per se, the "coral mortality index" was applied to the sets of data collected during the past 7 yr which may be a better gauge in determining the health of reefs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Extraordinary diversity of reef corals in the South China Sea
Danwei Huang,Danwei Huang,Wilfredo Y. Licuanan,Bert W. Hoeksema,Chaolun Allen Chen,Chaolun Allen Chen,Put O. Ang,Hui Huang,David J. W. Lane,Si Tuan Vo,Zarinah Waheed,Zarinah Waheed,Yang Amri Affendi,Thamasak Yeemin,Loke Ming Chou +14 more
TL;DR: This study assembles a comprehensive species distribution data set that comprises 16 reef areas spread across the entire South China Sea and underscores the remarkable and unexpected diversity of reef corals in the region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cleaning up the 'Bigmessidae': Molecular phylogeny of scleractinian corals from Faviidae, Merulinidae, Pectiniidae and Trachyphylliidae
TL;DR: A robust molecular phylogeny of 'Bigmessidae' is presented based on the combined five-gene data, achieving a higher degree of resolution compared to previous analyses and supporting the assertion that diversity estimates of scleractinian corals are erroneous.
Journal ArticleDOI
Turning the tide of parachute science.
Paris V. Stefanoudis,Wilfredo Y. Licuanan,Tiffany H. Morrison,Sheena Talma,Joeli Veitayaki,Lucy C. Woodall +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide evidence through systematic literature searches and queries that parachute science practices are still widespread in marine research and make some recommendations to help change the current status quo.
