Journal ArticleDOI
The Impact of Early Initiation of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1-Specific CD8 T Cell Response in Children
Hans M. L. Spiegel,Rohit Chandwani,Megan E. Sheehy,Joanna Dobroszycki,Glenn J. Fennelly,Andrew Wiznia,Jayme Radding,Mona Rigaud,Mona Rigaud,Henry Pollack,William Borkowsky,Michael G. Rosenberg,Douglas F. Nixon +12 more
TL;DR: The magnitude and breadth of the HIV-1-specific CD8 T cell response was significantly lower in children receiving early compared with late HAART treatment than in age-matched non-HAART-treated children, due to their younger age.
Journal ArticleDOI
Early antiretroviral therapy in children perinatally infected with HIV: a unique opportunity to implement immunotherapeutic approaches to prolong viral remission
Nigel Klein,Paolo Palma,Katherine Luzuriaga,Savita Pahwa,Eleni Nastouli,DM Gibb,Pablo Rojo,William Borkowsky,Stefania Bernardi,Paola Zangari,Vincent Calvez,Alexandra Compagnucci,Britta Wahren,Caroline Foster,María Ángeles Muñoz-Fernández,Anita De Rossi,Jintanat Ananworanich,Deenan Pillay,Carlo Giaquinto,Paolo Rossi +19 more
TL;DR: HIV-infected babies treated within a few days of birth have a unique combination of a very small pool of integrated viruses, a very high proportion of relatively HIV resistant naive T cells, and an unparalleled capacity to regenerate an immune repertoire that makes this group the optimum model population to investigate the potential efficacy of immune-based therapies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Severe varicella caused by varicella-vaccine strain in a child with significant T-cell dysfunction.
Patrick Jean-Philippe,Abigail Freedman,Mary Wu Chang,Sharon Steinberg,Anne A. Gershon,Philip LaRussa,William Borkowsky +6 more
TL;DR: An 18-month-old girl with cell-mediated immunodeficiency who developed a severe vaccine-associated rash and clinical evidence of vaccine- associated pneumonia 1 month after inadvertent receipt of varicella vaccine is reported on.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ontogeny of anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody production in HIV-1-infected infants.
Henry Pollack,Ming Xia Zhan,Tiina Ilmet-Moore,Ken Ajuang-Simbiri,Keith Krasinski,William Borkowsky +5 more
TL;DR: M measuring HIV antibody produced in vitro by lymphocytes isolated from peripheral blood of infants and children of HIV-1-infected mothers has been able to study the natural acquisition of humoral immunity to perinatal HIV- 1 infection and of assessing the effect of early therapeutic interventions on the humoral response to HIV-2.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired Immunity to Recall Antigens and Neoantigens in Severely Immunocompromised Children and Adolescents during the First Year of Effective Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy
Mona Rigaud,William Borkowsky,Petronella Muresan,Adriana Weinberg,P. LaRussa,Terry Fenton,Jennifer S. Read,Patrick Jean-Philippe,Elaine Fergusson,Bonnie Zimmer,Dorothy Smith,Joyce Kraimer +11 more
TL;DR: Severely immunocompromised children who are receiving HAART develop CMI and antibody to a recall antigen independent of the timing of vaccination, but they require a primary series of vaccinations.
