The community Noah land surface model with multiparameterization options (Noah-MP): 1. Model description and evaluation with local-scale measurements
Guo Yue Niu,Guo Yue Niu,Zong-Liang Yang,Kenneth E. Mitchell,Fei Chen,Michael Ek,Michael Barlage,Anil Kumar,Kevin W. Manning,Dev Niyogi,Enrique Rosero,Enrique Rosero,Mukul Tewari,Youlong Xia +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the objectives of community efforts in improving the Noah land surface model (LSM), documents, through mathematical formulations, the augmented conceptual realism in biophysical and hydrological processes, and introduces a framework for multiple options to parameterize selected processes (Noah•MP).
Journal ArticleDOI
Continental-scale water and energy flux analysis and validation for the North American Land Data Assimilation System project phase 2 (NLDAS-2): 1. Intercomparison and application of model products
Youlong Xia,Kenneth E. Mitchell,Michael Ek,Justin Sheffield,Brian Cosgrove,Eric F. Wood,Lifeng Luo,Charles Alonge,Helin Wei,Jesse Meng,Ben Livneh,Dennis P. Lettenmaier,Victor Koren,Qingyun Duan,Kingtse C. Mo,Yun Fan,David Mocko +16 more
TL;DR: The second phase of the NLDAS-2 research partnership is presented in this article, where four land surface models (Noah, Variable Infiltration Capacity, Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting, and Mosaic) are executed over the conterminous U.S. (CONUS) in real-time and retrospective modes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The community Noah land surface model with multiparameterization options (Noah-MP): 2. Evaluation over global river basins
Zong-Liang Yang,Guo Yue Niu,Guo Yue Niu,Kenneth E. Mitchell,Fei Chen,Michael Ek,Michael Barlage,Laurent Longuevergne,Kevin W. Manning,Dev Niyogi,Mukul Tewari,Youlong Xia +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the augmented Noah land surface model described in the first part of the two-part series was evaluated over global river basins across various climate zones, across various weather zones, and in addition, global-scale tests can reveal a model's weaknesses and strengths that a local-scale testing cannot.
Journal ArticleDOI
Continental‐scale water and energy flux analysis and validation for North American Land Data Assimilation System project phase 2 (NLDAS‐2): 2. Validation of model‐simulated streamflow
Youlong Xia,Kenneth E. Mitchell,Michael Ek,Brian Cosgrove,Justin Sheffield,Lifeng Luo,Charles Alonge,Helin Wei,Jesse Meng,Ben Livneh,Qingyun Duan,Dag Lohmann +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the validation of simulated streamflow from four land surface models (Noah, Mosaic, Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting (SAC-SMA), and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) and their ensemble mean.
