Convection Heat Transfer

This paper presents experimental results on heat transfer characteristics of laminar gas flow in a microtube with constant wall temperature whose wall temperature is lower than the inlet temperature (cooled case). The experiment was performed for nitrogen gas flow through microtubes with 163 and 243 μm in diameter and 50 mm in length. The gas was heated in an upstream section of the microtube to Tin ≈ 315 K, 335 K, and 355 K. The wall temperature was maintained at 305 K by circulating water around the microtube. The stagnation pressure was chosen in such a way that the exit Mach number ranges from 0.1 to 0.7. The outlet pressure was fixed at the atmospheric condition. The total temperature at the outlet, the inlet stagnation temperature, the mass flow rate, and the inlet temperature were measured. Total Temperature Measurement of Laminar Gas Flow at Microtube Outlet: Cooled From the Wall

Numerical and Experimental Prediction of Transitional Characteristics of Flow and Heat Transfer in an Array of Heated Blocks

When liquid is added to large-particle gas-fluidized beds where the liquid density is similar to the particle density, the liquid addition can cause a dramatic increase in the velocity range and intensity of fluidization. In this paper it is shown that this also leads to strong enhancement of the heat transfer between the bed and an immersed tube. Experiments were carried out using a heated tube of outer diameter 25 mm in air-fluidized beds of polystyrene particles or glass beads to which small quantities of water (typically equivalent to 10 per cent of the bed volume) were added. The results from the heat transfer experiments are explained with the aid of observations of the tube surface using an industrial endoscope located inside the tube. The key factors underlying the enhancement of heat transfer are identified to be heat conduction to liquid-solid aggregates, convection to the liquid phase, convection to the gas phase and vaporization.

A fire wall usually contains moisture. When the wall is exposed to flame, water in the wall evaporates into vapor. The latent heat of water plays an important role in the resistance to heat propagation. A wall of high water content is therefore expected to have good fire-resistant characteristics. In this study the thermal responses of a fire wall that consists of a porous material, its pores partially filled with water, are investigated numerically. A simple one-dimensional numerical model developed in the authors’ previous study is simplified to reduce the computational parameters. The parameteric study is conducted to investigate the effects of thermal diffusivity, moisture, and density ratio on wall thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3 hours of fire resistance. The correlation between the wall thickness and fire resistance time is obtained.
