Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiology and etiology of childhood pneumonia
TL;DR: Substantial evidence revealed that the leading risk factors contributing to pneumonia incidence are lack of exclusive breastfeeding, undernutrition, indoor air pollution, low birth weight, crowding and lack of measles immunization.
Journal ArticleDOI
SLC2A9 is a newly identified urate transporter influencing serum urate concentration, urate excretion and gout

TL;DR: Genetic variants within a transporter gene, SLC2A9, that explain 1.7–5.3% of the variance in serum uric acid concentrations are identified following a genome-wide association scan in a Croatian population sample and it is shown that it has strong uric Acid transport activity in Xenopus laevis oocytes.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Circulating concentrations of several key components in sphingolipid metabolism are under strong genetic control, and variants in these loci can be tested for a role in the development of common cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological, and psychiatric diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome-wide association study identifies novel loci associated with circulating phospho- and sphingolipid concentrations

TL;DR: Nine novel phospho- and sphingolipid loci are identified, substantially increasing knowledge of the genetic basis for these traits, and within class molar proportions uncovered three additional loci suggesting their involvement in either fatty acid elongation/saturation processes or fatty acid specific turnover mechanisms.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of genome-wide heterozygosity on a range of biomedically relevant human quantitative traits
Harry Campbell,Andrew D. Carothers,Igor Rudan,Caroline Hayward,Zrinka Biloglav,Lovorka Barać,Marijana Peričić,Branka Janićijević,Nina Smolej-Narančić,Ozren Polasek,Ivana Kolcic,James L. Weber,Nicholas D. Hastie,Pavao Rudan,Alan F. Wright +14 more
TL;DR: Findings suggest that h(R) should be considered as a genetic risk factor in genetic epidemiological studies on common disease traits and are consistent with the well-known effects of heterosis (hybrid vigour) described when outcrossing animals and plants.
