TL;DR: In this paper, an Interactive Satellite Terminal antenna system consisting of an antenna to which is associated a feed horn is described, which is characterized in that it comprises an elliptical parabolic main reflector and a corrugated feed horn having an outer elliptical aperture and an inner cylindrical waveguide with an inner portion and a step section.
Abstract: The invention relates to a Interactive Satellite Terminal antenna system comprising an antenna to which is associated a feed horn. This antenna systems characterized in that it comprises an elliptical parabolic main reflector and a corrugated feed horn ( 2 ) having an outer elliptical aperture and an inner cylindrical waveguide with an inner portion ( 7 ) and a step section ( 8 ) and in that cavity elements ( 10 ) are added to the step section ( 8 ) for compensating cross-polar components. The invention can be used in antenna systems.

TL;DR: This paper presents the typical system architecture of high throughput satellites and provides an analytical approach to elements that are required for the estimation of forward and return capacity, the key factor in these systems.
Abstract: KA-SAT has represented a new generation of high throughput satellites (HTS) with the largest number of spots delivering a capacity of 90 Gbit/s for a wide variety of services ranging from internet access in homes to satellite news gathering and domestic broadcasting. HTS systems require a critical approach in terms of communication system requirements and payload analysis. This paper presents the typical system architecture of such systems and provides an analytical approach to elements that are required for the estimation of forward and return capacity, the key factor in these systems. These elements include the effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) and the gain over noise temperature (G/T) cumulative densities, the carrier-to-inference (C/I) estimations and the capacity assessment for the forward and return links.

TL;DR: The main outcomes of the ABSOLUTE project are described in terms of network and system architecture, regulations, and implementation of aerial base stations, portable land mobile units, satellite backhauling, S-MIM satellite messaging, and multimode user equipments.
Abstract: Rapidly deployable and reliable mission-critical communication networks are fundamental requirements to guarantee the successful operations of public safety officers during disaster recovery and crisis management preparedness. The ABSOLUTE project focused on designing, prototyping, and demonstrating a high-capacity IP mobile data network with low latency and large coverage suitable for many forms of multimedia delivery including public safety scenarios. The ABSOLUTE project combines aerial, terrestrial, and satellites communication networks for providing a robust standalone system able to deliver resilience communication systems. This article focuses on describing the main outcomes of the ABSOLUTE project in terms of network and system architecture, regulations, and implementation of aerial base stations, portable land mobile units, satellite backhauling, S-MIM satellite messaging, and multimode user equipments.

TL;DR: The use of SDN and NFV in a broadband satellite access scenario will be analyzed and some selected applications will be examied to identify possible benefits provided by these paradigms.
Abstract: Terrestrial networks are currently embracing new paradigms as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV); these technologies can provide great opportunities also to broadband satellite networks architectures, bringing flexibility, scalability, customization and cost reduction. Moreover, new user-tailored services could be provided. In this paper, the use of SDN and NFV in a broadband satellite access scenario will be analyzed and some selected applications will be examied to identify possible benefits provided by these paradigms.

TL;DR: This study investigated transmitter location using two-satellite techniques; time difference of departure (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA), producing predictions that interference could be located to tens of km using pairs of EUTELSAT II satellites in north/south stationkept orbits.
Abstract: In order to combat the problem of interference on EUTELSAT satellites, a study was let to the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA), Defford, UK. This study investigated transmitter location using two-satellite techniques; time difference of arrival (TDOA) and frequency difference of arrival (FDOA). The study produced predictions that interference could be located to tens of km using pairs of EUTELSAT II satellites in north/south stationkept orbits. If a satellite in an inclined orbit, such as a EUTELSAT I, was used, the interference could be located an order of magnitude more accurately. The dominant cause of location error was found to be the satellite ephemeris accuracy in predicting velocity. The theoretical findings were backed up with a successful measurement campaign which targeted both test signals from a known location and operational traffic. © British Crown Copyright 1997/DERA.
