TL;DR: Born-approximation calculations of the ionization of aluminum $L$-shell electrons have been performed using Hartree-Slater wave functions as discussed by the authors, and the results show a delayed maximum above threshold, and the ramifications of this phenomenon are discussed.
Abstract: Born-approximation calculations of the ionization of aluminum $L$-shell electrons have been performed using Hartree-Slater wave functions. Generalized oscillator strengths and proton energy-loss cross sections from threshold to ionized-electron energies of 128 Ry have been calculated. The results show a delayed maximum above threshold, and the ramifications of this phenomenon are discussed. Comparison is made with hydrogenic results and good agreement is found at intermediate and large energy loss, but the hydrogenic calculation is totally inadequate near threshold. The implications of this for stopping-power calculations and subshell corrections is discussed. The Bethe asymptotic cross section is obtained and the variation of parameters therein is investigated.

TL;DR: This paper showed that merely presenting academic material on a systematic basis virtually eliminated the disruptive behavior of severely mentally retarded children, and suggested that it may be possible to reduce or eliminate disruptive behavior by arranging for systematic presentation of academic material.
Abstract: A study designed to strengthen academic performance in 4 highly disruptive, educable mentally retarded boys revealed that merely presenting academic material on a systematic basis virtually eliminated their disruptive behavior. When differential reinforcement was applied to math or reading, it resulted in maximal performance on that subject matter which was followed by token reinforcement. Further, within 19 hours of reinforcement contingent upon academic performance, reading comprehension improved from a pre-primer to a second-grade level for two children, and from first grade to fourth grade for the other two children. The data suggest it may be possible to reduce or eliminate disruptive behavior by arranging for systematic presentation of academic material.

TL;DR: It was found that a group of children with six weeks' exposure to reinforcement for daily academic performance scored higher under both conditions of test administration (standard and reinforcement) than a control group.
Abstract: The effects of two different motivational conditions upon standardized test performance were explored for two student populations. The first study involving 12 trainable retardates showed a significant increase in score on the Metropolitan Readiness Test given under reinforcement conditions when these results were compared with scores taken under standard testing conditions. In a second study, these same results were obtained with a group of 30 normal fourth-graders. An additional study was conducted to determine the effect of different experiences with token reinforcement procedures on test performance. It was found that a group of children with six weeks' exposure to reinforcement for daily academic performance scored higher under both conditions of test administration (standard and reinforcement) than a control group. However, in a single exposure to token reinforcement for correct performance on the Metropolitan Test, both the experimental group and its match control showed a parallel increase in test performance. These findings offer a procedure that yields a more representative assessment of a student's academic achievement than does testing under standard conditions.

TL;DR: A series of three experiments was performed with small groups of young children with severe articulation problems, demonstrating a procedure for producing generalization by making each child a discriminative stimulus for correct articulaton by the other child, thus maintaining high levels of correct articulation for each child when in the presence of the other.
Abstract: A series of three experiments was performed in a classroom setting with small groups of young children with severe articulation problems. Variations on a basic token reinforcement procedure were demonstrated in each experiment. A combined multiple baseline/reversal design showed effective experimenter control of rates of correct and incorrect consonant sound articulation in all cases. In addition, the data in each experiment showed the problems of obtaining stimulus generalization of the high rates of correct articulation to non-training settings. The third experiment demonstrated a procedure for producing such generalization by making each child a discriminative stimulus for correct articulaton by the other child, thus maintaining high levels of correct articulation for each child when in the presence of the other.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for transforming conventional dummy variable coefficients for the purpose of simplifying their interpretation is proposed. But this method is especially useful in problems involving several dummy variable systems, and it is not suitable for the case of continuous-scale independent variables.
Abstract: This paper proposes a method for transforming conventional dummy variable coefficients for the purpose of simplifying their interpretation. This method is especially useful in problems involving several dummy variable systems. The transformation was first presented by James A. M\lorgan, who illustrated the transformation for a hypothetical problem consisting of a single dummy variable system with three classes. The authors have extended Morgan's method to equations with several dummy variable systems as well as conventionally scaled independent variables. The transformation is illustrated for an empirical example involving several continuously scaled variables and five dummy variable systems, each with two or more classes.

TL;DR: The authors found that the perception of figures against ground is most enhanced, other things being equal, by patterns which have coarser texture and a higher percentage of area inked, whereas the cartographic designer has greatest control over heterogeneity.
Abstract: Total map perception integrates geographic material (the base map) and thematic material (the distribution which is mapped). Psychological studies of the figure-ground relationship indicate that maps should be designed so that thematic symbols are experienced as figures, and base map materials as ground. Figure perception is enhanced by heterogeneity, contour, and area or enclosedness; the cartographic designer has greatest control over heterogeneity. Tests of preprinted area patterns for heterogeneity indicate that the perception of figures against ground is most enhanced, other things being equal, by patterns which have coarser texture and a higher percentage of area inked.

TL;DR: In this article, a central-field approximation is used to calculate generalized oscillator strengths for a number of discrete and continuous transitions in the noble gases, the alkalis, and Hg, where experimental data exist.
Abstract: A central-field approximation is used to calculate generalized oscillator strengths (GOS) for a number of discrete and continuous transitions in the noble gases, the alkalis, and Hg, where experimental data exist. The comparisons show that this approximation yields good agreement with experiment except for the first few discrete excitations in low-$Z$ and certain high-$Z$ elements, and in the region of large peaks near threshold in continuum transitions. The reasons for the discrepancies are pointed out, in terms of the approximations made, and the usefulness of this type of calculation is discussed.

Abstract: Reasoning subtest of the Differential Aptitude Tests, and they required the ability to recognize sequential patterns that could be described in terms of rigid motions. The fourth subtest, which measured the ability to visualize the unfolded appearance of a pictured piece of paper that had been folded and then punched, was taken from the Paper Folding subtest of the Kit of Reference Tests for Cognitive Factors (Educational Testing Service, 1962). A single point was scored for each space-test item.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was found that map readers mentally generalize geographic shapes into ones that are similar to the over-all shape quality of the original map, and that the mapmaker should provide at least those points along state outlines that are proven to be the cues for shape identification.
Abstract: Communicating with value-by-area cartograms is at best a difficult task. However, the mapmaker can render a cartogram more meaningful in communication by retaining the basic shapes of the statistical units. This idea was examined and several tests were administered to subjects to gain information about points along state shapes that are used as cues in map reading. It was determined that map readers mentally generalize geographic shapes into ones that are similar to the over-all shape quality of the originals. In cartogram construction, the mapmaker should provide at least those points along state outlines that are proven to be the cues for shape identification. Anything less will detract from its ability to communicate effectively and, in fact, if this is the case alternate mapping methods should be employed.

TL;DR: This paper describes two test apparatuses developed to facilitate discrimination learning studies with primates, the semiautomated apparatus and the totally automated test system.
Abstract: This paper describes two test apparatuses developed to facilitate discrimination learning studies with primates. The semiautomated apparatus provides for presentation of stereometric stimulus materials through the illumination of lamps which make a one-way mirror transparent at the onset of a trial. The totally automated test system was developed to facilitate the collection of Transfer Index (TI) measurements, measurements intended to provide for equitable assessments of the learning-set capabilities of diverse primate genera. The TI test procedures and the system’s operations provide for criterional mastery (67% or 84% responses correct) of two-ehoice visual discrimination problems, consisting of projected patterns, then reversal of cues for the 10 test trials that are of particular significance in calculation of the TI scores.

TL;DR: The properties of the immunochemically distinct substances isolated from four strains of Clostridium perfringens, mucoid variants of Hobbs 1, 5, 9, and 10, were shown to be compatible with the hypothesis that polysaccharides are generally responsible for the "type-specificity" of these organisms.
Abstract: The properties of the immunochemically distinct substances isolated from four strains of Clostridium perfringens, mucoid variants of Hobbs 1, 5, 9, and 10, were shown to be compatible with the hypothesis that polysaccharides are generally responsible for the "type-specificity" of these organisms. The presence of "group-specific" substance was demonstrated by the cross-reaction of recent preparations of Hobbs 5 antisera with the isolated polysaccharides. The cross-reactions were not observed with specific antisera of the other strains studied and were independent of the "type-specific" phenomenon.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of 110 male and female students from a southern urban, state-supported university were administered a Religious Dogma Scale (Fagan & Breed, 1970) and asked to report peak experiences.
Abstract: Maslow (1964) hypothesized a negative relationship between adherence to conventional religious beliefs and the ability to experience peak moments. T o test this hypothesis, a sample of 110 male and female students from a southern urban, state-supported university were administered a Religious Dogma Scale (Fagan & Breed, 1970) and asked to report peak experiences. Ss, given a description of peak experiences which had been modified from Maslow's instructions, were asked to describe two such experiences, if they had had them. The two authors separately rated the validity of the experiences on a scale ranging from 0 to 10. The two scores were then pooled for a score of 0 to 20. Correlation between raters' judgments was .84. Twenty-one Ss did not write descriptions and thus were not included.
