TL;DR: A new method for determination of serum ceruloplasmin from its oxidase activity is developed, in which o -dianisidine dihydrochloride is used as substrate, and forms a stable product that is measured at 540 nm.
Abstract: We have developed a new method for determination of serum ceruloplasmin from its oxidase activity, in which o -dianisidine dihydrochloride is used as substrate. o -Dianisidine dihydrochloride is more stable than is the more widely used p -phenylenediamine substrate, and forms a stable product that is measured at 540 nm. Correlation was good between results of this method and those obtained with both a p -phenylenediamine substrate method ( r = 0.98) and a radial immunodiffusion procedure ( r = 0.97). There is little or no interference from reducing or colored components of serum. The coefficient of variation (day-to-day) for the method was 4.2%. A normal range of 62-140 U/ liter has been determined by the reported method.

TL;DR: The probably greater surface area of the gel-like reduced ferrous compounds in an anaerobic soil results in more soil phosphate being solubilized where solution phosphate is low and more solution phosphate being sorbed where Solution phosphate is high.
Abstract: Anaerobic soils released more phosphate to soil solutions low in soluble phosphate and sorbed more phosphate from soil solutions high in soluble phosphate than did aerobic soils. The difference in behavior of phosphate under aerobic and anaerobic conditions is attributed to the change brought about in ferric oxyhydroxide by soil reduction. The probably greater surface area of the gel-like reduced ferrous compounds in an anaerobic soil results in more soil phosphate being solubilized where solution phosphate is low and more solution phosphate being sorbed where solution phosphate is high.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-consistent calculation of energy bands in ferromagnetic nickel using the tight-binding method has been extended to include spin-orbit coupling, and the energy levels were obtained at 1357 points in 1/16th of the Brillouin zone.
Abstract: A previous self-consistent calculation of energy bands in ferromagnetic nickel using the tight-binding method has been extended to include spin-orbit coupling. Exchange was incorporated using the $X\ensuremath{\alpha}$ method with $\ensuremath{\alpha}=\frac{2}{3}$. Energy levels were obtained at 1357 points in 1/16th of the Brillouin zone. The direction of spin alignment was taken to be [001]. The density of states was computed by a hybrid method. Cross sections of the Fermi surface were determined, and effective masses were obtained. The interband contribution to the conductivity tensor was calculated using matrix elements computed from wave functions including spin-orbit coupling. Results were obtained for both the diagonal and the off-diagonal elements of the conductivity tensor.

TL;DR: ACTH 4–10 served to improve visual memory, decrease anxiety, reinstitute a previously habituated alpha blocking response in the occipital EEG, and generally influence the occIPital EEG toward a pattern consistent with increased attention.
Abstract: The effects of two polypeptides, ACTH 1–24 and ACTH 4–10 on a variety of bioelectric and behavioral measures of attention, memory and anxiety in human subjects were examined within the context of a disjunctive reaction time paradigm. ACTH 1–24 had no effect on any of the measures involved; ACTH 4–10 , however, served to improve visual memory, decrease anxiety, reinstitute a previously habituated alpha blocking response in the occipital EEG, and generally influence the occipital EEG toward a pattern consistent with increased attention. The results were taken to suggest a direct polypeptide influence on CNS attentional mechanisms.

TL;DR: An analysis is presented of 2313 histologically proven cases of carcinoma of the colon and rectum at Charity Hospital from January 1, 1948 through December 31, 1970, so that 5‐year followup was possible, survival curves based upon several parameters were determined.
Abstract: An analysis is presented of 2313 histologically proven cases of carcinoma of the colon and rectum at Charity Hospital from January 1, 1948 through December 31, 1970. For the 2010 cases diagnosed prior to January 1, 1968, so that 5-year followup was possible, survival curves based upon several parameters were determined. Dukes' classification, histologic confirmation of lymph node involvement, and the surgeon's classification of the operation as curative or palliative were the factors that had the greatest influence on survival. The 5-year survival rate for the entire series was 24%. This figure is increased to 47% for those undergoing a curative procedure. The lesion is more common in females than males, and Caucasians than Negroes. In this large series there is a negligible difference in survival between the male and female populations or between the Negro and Caucasian populations.

TL;DR: The authors suggest that in depression the primary value of TRH may be as a diagnostic tool in differentiating among various types of depression.
Abstract: Eight patients with serious depression were given 1000 µg. of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) or saline intravenously for three days in a double-blindstudy. All patients then received 1000 µg. of TRH daily for the next seven days. The group receiving saline showed the greatest improvement; only one patient improved substantially while receiving TRH. Plasma thyrotropin and prolactin responses to TRH were distinctly diminished in three of the most severely depressed patients. The authors suggest that in depression the primary value of TRH may be as a diagnostic tool in differentiating among various types of depression.

TL;DR: In this article, a dynamic roughness equation including major wind and wave interaction parameters (wind shear velocity, wave height, and phase velocity) is derived, which can be used to construct a nomogram to determine wind stress at the sea surface, given phase velocities, wave heights, and the wind speed at any height in the atmospheric boundary layer.
Abstract: A dynamic roughness equation including major wind and wave interaction parameters (wind shear velocity, wave height, and phase velocity) is derived. Because this equation implicitly incorporates the effects of wave steepness, relative water depth, and wind duration and fetch, it may be applied to a wide variety of natural conditions. This equation was used to construct a nomogram which can be utilized to determine the wind stress at the sea surface, given phase velocities, wave heights, and the wind speed at any height in the atmospheric boundary layer. The proposed relationships are verified by the available field and laboratory data under near-neutral atmospheric stability conditions from which the appropriate parameters could be determined.

TL;DR: In this paper, the thickness and the texture of overbank sediments were determined for a number of depositional environments on the Mississippi River flood plain in Louisiana, and it was suggested that backswamp deposits in this area required 10,000 to 11,000 yr to accumulate.
Abstract: In 1973, the Mississippi River was out of its banks for more than 2 mo from April to June. The thickness and the texture of overbank sediments were determined for a number of depositional environments on the Mississippi River flood plain in Louisiana. Average sediment thickness ranged from 53 cm along the natural levee to 1.1 cm in the back-swamp. The texture of deposits varied from natural levee sediments with 68 percent sand to backswamp sediments with 97 percent silt and clay. The amount of lateral erosion of bordering Pleistocene bluffs increased 271 percent over the previous 9 yr of record because of the flood. Using the rate of backswamp deposition during the 1973 flood, it is suggested that backswamp deposits in this area required 10,000 to 11,000 yr to accumulate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of chemical, physical, and enzymatic treatments of rice straw and sugarcane bagasse on the microbial digestibility of cellulose have been investigated.
Abstract: The effects of chemical, physical, and enzymatic treatments of rice straw and sugarcane bagasse on the microbial digestibility of cellulose have been investigated. Treatment with 4% NaOH for 15 min at 100 C increased the digestibility of cellulose from 29.4 to 73%. Treatment with 5.2% NH3 could increase digestibility to 57.0% Treatments with sulfuric acid and crude cellulase preparation solubilized cellulose but did not increase the digestibility. Grinding or high-pressure cooking of the substrate had little effect on increasing the digestibility of cellulosic substrates by the Cellulomonas species.

TL;DR: In this paper, it is argued that at the margin the opposite categories of absolute scarcity and relative wants are more important, and that just as the implication of the former categories was growthmania, so the imply of the latter (opposite) categories is a steady-state economy.
Abstract: Section I discusses the “growthmania” mind-set and considers various types of limits to growth ignored by adherents to this majority position. Section II investigates the conceptual roots of growthmania: the orthodox doctrines of relative scarcity and absolute wants. It is argued that at the margin the opposite categories of absolute scarcity and relative wants are more important, and that just as the implication of the former categories was growthmania, so the implication of the latter (opposite) categories is a steady-state economy. Section III defines and discusses the alternative to a growth-oriented economy, namely a steadystate economy. Section IV discusses the notions of efficiency and technical progress from the steady-state perspective, and argues that growth in output flow as conventionally measured results, beyond some point, in a reduction in both the service efficiency of the stock and the maintenance efficiency of the throughput, and thereby makes throughput growth a perverse index of welfare. In Section V the issue of transition to and appropriate institutions for a steady-state are discussed. Section VI considers in more detail an institution for controlling aggregate throughput, namely a system of auctioned depletion quotas, and contrasts it with the orthodox recommendation of pollution taxes.

TL;DR: The main goal of as mentioned in this paper is to squeeze out points of joint continuity from a separately continuous action of a semigroup on a topological space, which is a variation on a theme by R.Ellis, who showed that separate continuity on a locally compact Hausdorff group implies joint continuity for the multiplication function.
Abstract: The principal goal of this paper is squeezing out points of joint continuity from a separately continuous action of a semigroup on a topological space. The paper itself is a variation on a theme by R.Ellis, who showed that separate continuity on a locally compact Hausdorff group implies joint continuity for the multiplication function $[6]$. The paper closes with several diverse applications.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-consistent calculation of energy bands in lithium has been performed using the linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals (LCAO) method.
Abstract: A self-consistent calculation of energy bands in lithium has been performed using the linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals (LCAO) method. The basis set consisted of nine $s$-type, six $p$-type, and three $d$-type Gaussian orbitals. Exchange was included according to the $X\ensuremath{\alpha}$ method with $\ensuremath{\alpha}=\frac{2}{3}$. Results are presented for the band structure, Fermi-surface properties, cohesive energy, and the Compton profile. The interband contribution to the optical conductivity was calculated including the $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{k}}$ variation of the momentum matrix elements. The distortions of the Fermi surface from spherical symmetry are less than 4%. The optical and thermal effective-mass ratios are 1.48 and 1.53, respectively. The onset of direct interband transitions is predicted to occur at 3.28 eV. The calculated cohesive energy is 0.124 Ry.

TL;DR: In this paper, the equations of motion of a spinning body in the gravitational field of a much larger mass are found using both the Corinaldesi-Papapetrou spin supplementary condition (SSC) and the Pirani SSC.
Abstract: The equations of motion of a spinning body in the gravitational field of a much larger mass are found using both the Corinaldesi-Papapetrou spin supplementary condition (SSC) and the Pirani SSC. These equations of motion are compared with our previous result derived from Gupta's quantum theory of Gravitation. It is found that the spin-dependent terms differ in each of the above three results due to a different location of the center of mass of the spinning body. As expected, these terms are not affected by the choice of either Schwarzschild or isotropic coordinates. Finally, for the presently planned Stanford gyroscope experiment, we find the maximum secular displacement of the orbit of the gyro with respect to the orbit of its non-rotating housing to be of the order of (10−7 cm/year)t, a result much smaller than Schiff's result which is proportional to time squared.

TL;DR: The synergistic role of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and mixed infections of Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) and Escherichia coli (EC) in the airsacculitis syndrome was evaluated in gnotobiotic chickens.
Abstract: The synergistic role of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and mixed infections of Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) and Escherichia coli (EC) in the airsacculitis syndrome was evaluated in gnotobiotic chickens. Relative air sac lesion score indexes, in descending order of severity, from various combinations of organisms were: 9.5—IBV, MS, EC; 6.8—IBV, EC; 4.5—IBV, MS; 2.7—IBV; and 0.5—MS, EC. Infectious bronchitis virus caused a mild fibrinous inflammation. M. synoviae combined with IBV increased heterophilic and follicular lymphoid infiltration and mortality. E. coli combined with IBV increased exudation and prolonged airsacculitis. Concentrations of fibrinogen, gamma globulin, and total plasma proteins were elevated significantly by combined infections of IBV, MS, and EC (P Images

TL;DR: It is established that migration of cells from the circulation, endothelium or media accounts for the cellular growth of the lesions and monocytes, endothelial cells, and medial smooth muscle cells thus have been implicated.
Abstract: The role of cell proliferation in atherosclerosis has received much attention. It has been suggested for many years that the increase in cells during the formation of intimal lesions may be due to intrinsic proliferation. This hypothesis was based mainly on the observation of mitotic figures in the smooth muscle and foam cells of atherosclerotic plaques, even though mitoses were seen only rarely. On the other hand, it was proposed but never definitely established that migration of cells from the circulation, endothelium or media accounts for the cellular growth of the lesions. Monocytes, endothelial cells, and medial smooth muscle cells thus have been implicated.

Abstract: From 1948 through 1970, 164 histologically diagnosed cases of primary liver carcinoma were managed at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. The disease was five times more common in males, and most frequently occurred in the 6th and 7th decades of life. Weight loss, upper abdominal pain, anorexia, and jaundice made up the most significant symptom complex. Hepatomegaly was the most common physical finding. Approximately 85% of the cases were hepatocellular carcinoma. Extra-hepatic metastases were present in 55% of the 120 cases which came to autopsy. Lung, regional nodes, adrenals, and bone were the favored sites. Tumor was limited to one lobe in 32% of cases. Cirrhosis of the liver was diagnosed in 56%. Six patients underwent hepatic resection; 1 lived over 3 years, and 1 is alive 3 1/2 years after operation. Twelve patients received chemotherapy; 1 was alive at 2 1/2 years. Forty-nine patients had an intra-abdominal operative procedure. Over-all survival data for operated vs. non-operated cases did not vary significantly. Twenty-seven patients had percutaneous liver biopsy; the death of 3 was directly attributable to intra-abdominal hemorrhage after this procedure. Cancer 33:1624–1629, 1974.
