TL;DR: The results of this study indicate that this neoplasm is malignant from the onset and does not develop from malignant transformation of a preexisting “benign” mixed tumor.
Abstract: One hundred and thirty-four salivary gland tumors originally diagnosed as malignant mixed tumor at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the Medical College of South Carolina were analyzed. These were reclassified and only 25 were found to possess specific histopathologic criteria necessary for the diagnosis of malignant mixed tumor. Where possible, the clinical behavior, therapy, and prognosis were correlated with the histopathology. The malignant mixed tumor was found primarily in the parotid gland and was observed more frequently in men. The median age of patients with this tumor was 38 years (60% occurred prior to age 40). Pain and fixation of the tumor could not be correlated with malignancy. Sixty-four percent of these tumors presented as primary malignant mixed tumors. Histologically proven metastases were observed in 71% of the cases, with lung, lymph node, central nervous system, and bone the most frequent sites. Certain histopathologic features of the malignant mixed tumor can be correlated with eventual metastases. Although the pathogenesis of the malignant mixed tumor remains undetermined, the results of this study indicate that this neoplasm is malignant from the onset and does not develop from malignant transformation of a preexisting “benign” mixed tumor.

TL;DR: Comparative light and electron microscopic study of nuclei in rat trigeminal neurons identified two structures which are the ultrastructural equivalent of the paranucloelar structure and the accessory body of Cajal, two nucleoplasmic structures previously demonstrated in other neurons by light microscope silver staining methods.
Abstract: Comparative light and electron microscopic study of nuclei in rat trigeminal neurons identified two structures which are the ultrastructural equivalent of the paranucloelar structure and the accessory body of Cajal, two nucleoplasmic structures previously demonstrated in other neurons by light microscope silver staining methods. Ultrastructural evidence indicates that the dense component of the nucleolus is converted into the paranucleolar structure, which then detaches from the nucleolar surface to lie free in the nucleoplasm as the accessory body of Cajal. The cytochemistry, ultrastructure, and antimonate reactivity of the paranucleolar structure and accessory body were identical. Both structures lacked cytochemically demonstrable DNA, RNA, or basic protein. The neuronal nuclei also contained Feulgen-positive sex chromatin bodies that adhered to the nucleolus, the nuclear membrane, or to both of these structures in specimens of female but not male rats. The ultrastructure and antimonate reactivity of these bodies closely resembled that of heterochromatin clumps but differed markedly from that of the paranucleolar structures and accessory bodies. Additional structures characterized ultrastructurally included patches, granular bodies, and flakes. These structures, like the paranucleolar structure and the accessory body of Cajal, are apparently unique to nuclei of neurons. Cytochemical methods showed that the patches contained basic protein but no nucleic acid.

TL;DR: There is evidence to suggest that cardiopulmonary bypass produces changes that underlie the diverse pathophysiologic states, including susceptibility to infection, abnormal bleeding, and deranged organ function, which contribute so significantly to the morbidity and mortality of open heart surgery.

TL;DR: Evidence presented in this paper indicates that crude histoplasmins may be fractionated by Sephadex G-25 chromatography, resulting in quantitative yield of skin test active material, and colorimetric estimation of protein, carbohydrate and electrophoretic data suggest that the skin testactive component may be a protein-carbohydrate complex.
Abstract: Evidence presented in this paper indicates that crude histoplasmins may be fractionated by Sephadex G-25 chromatography, resulting in quantitative yield of skin test active material. Data obtained from fractionations of four separate histoplasmin lots indicates that the procedure is applicable in varying degrees of efficiency to histoplasmins of varying degrees of skin test potency.Colorimetric estimation of protein, carbohydrate and electrophoretic data suggest that the skin test active component may be a protein-carbohydrate complex. Other data indicate that the skin test active complex is either grossly contaminated with inert materials of approximately similar molecular weight or consists of a major component complexed with a protein moiety. It has been possible to dehydrate the skin test active component to a powdered state. The powder is easily re-dissolved in sterile non-pyrogenic distilled water or physiological saline and apparently retains its skin test activity. The principal contributions of the...

TL;DR: Invasive infection of the burn wound has long been the primary cause of death in thermal infury and recent understanding of the pathogenesis of burn wound sepsis has led to the successful control of the infection as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Invasive infection of the burn wound has long been the primary cause of death in thermal infury. Recent understanding of the pathogenesis of this “burn wound sepsis” has led to the successful control of the infection. The avascular nature of the burn wound precludes successful use of systemic antibacterial agents, but topical use has been found to be effective in reducing the numbers of bacteria to more manageable proportions. While all drugs are not effective, two rather old ones, silver nitrate and p‐aminomethylbenzenesulfonamide, are enfoying a renewed popularity due to their effectiveness in the burn patient. Wounds are more easily cared for, septic complications are lessened, and survival rates, particularly in children, are greatly increased. Significant side effects of drug use occur with both, but these are readily controlled with intelligent use. Other agents are being introduced, but experience with them is too limited. However, the success with the drugs currently utilized has firmly established the principle of effective topical therapy in the control of burn wound sepsis.

TL;DR: It is unavoidable that the mechanism by which the attines prevent contamination of their fungus cultures by alien microorganisms does not involve the elaboration of antibiotic substances by the ants, the fungus, or any unspecified 3rd symbiont.
Abstract: The theory that attine ants maintain pure cultures of their food fungi by application of antibiotics to their fungus gardens has been rendered untenable. Extracts prepared from the ant Atta colombica tonsipes Santschi, from its wild fungus gardens, from expended fungus gardens, and from laboratory cultures of its fungus have been assayed for antibiotic activity against a wide spectrum of microorganisms, and no significant growthinhibiting activity has been detected. The conclusion is unavoidable that the mechanism by which the attines prevent contamination of their fungus cultures by alien microorganisms does not involve the elaboration of antibiotic substances by the ants, the fungus, or any unspecified 3rd symbiont.

TL;DR: Liberalization of indications for cesarean section is recommended as one way of improving fetal survival and lowering fetal morbidity associated with this abnormal fetal position.
Abstract: The combination of prematurity and breech presentation subjects the fetus to great danger of death or birth trauma. Fetal mortality associated with breech presentation is 10 times higher when prematurity is added. Liberalization of indications for cesarean section is recommended as one way of improving fetal survival and lowering fetal morbidity associated with this abnormal fetal position.
