TL;DR: In this article, a synthesis of experimental data with simple analyses, such as pressure losses, turbulence intensities, spectra, correlation functions and length scales, is presented, and the present results are found to agree well with other data published in the literature.

Abstract: This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of various thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems, with the aim of custom designing a TBC system to be both strain tolerant and have a low thermal conductivity. Methods of heat transfer within zirconia based ceramics are discussed, including the influence of coating microstructure and ceramic composition. It is shown the addition of dopant atoms (colouring) is effective in reducing ‘phonon’ transport and that layered microstructures are effective in reducing ‘photon’ transport. Advanced processing, using EB-PVD coating methods has allowed both coloured and layered ceramic coatings to be produced. Measured thermal conductivities of 1.0 W mK −1 have been achieved using these methods, much lower than current commercial EB-PVD coatings at 1.5–1.9 W mK −1 .

TL;DR: In this article, microstructural characterisation was performed for IN718 thin-walled builds, produced using direct laser fabrication (DLF), to understand the influence of the variations in the deposition path and the laser power on the microtexture, grain structures and intermetallic particle morphology development.

TL;DR: In this paper, a crystal plasticity model for hcp materials is presented which is based on dislocation glide and pinning, and it is shown that the primary effect of elastic anisotropy during subsequent plastic flow is to increase local, grain-level, accumulated slip.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of processing conditions, such as laser power, scan speed, powder feed rate, etc. on the microstructure of the build have been assessed and it has been found that Ti-6Al-4V is very susceptible to the formation of columnar grains during laser deposition.
