30 Mar 2004TL;DR: The paper shows the process of validating simulation tools with model and full-scale measurements and describes the challenges encountered and the deficiencies of commercial tools used now and the roadmap for Thales Naval Netherlands towards the integrated tools of the future.
Abstract: Reliable EMC predictions are very important in the design of a naval platform's topside. Currently, EMC predictions of a Navy ship are verified by scale model and full-scale measurements. In the near future, the validation of software tools leads to an increased confidence in EMC predictions and (hopefully) removes the need for scale model measurements. In general, full-scale verification measurements will remain necessary, although perhaps fewer measurements will be required. The paper presents our topside design experience, from rough estimations 40 years ago, to analytical calculations and model measurements 20 years ago, to the numerically supported process as it is now. It shows the process of validating simulation tools with model and full-scale measurements. It also describes the challenges encountered and the deficiencies of commercial tools used now and the roadmap for Thales Naval Netherlands towards the integrated tools of the future.

18 Aug 2015TL;DR: In this paper, the results obtained from the UPS tested show very good isolation which, combined with the already installed power line filters inside equipment, will be more than adequate to achieve the required isolation for RED/BLACK separation.
Abstract: A major objective of TEMPEST engineering is to separate equipment carrying classified (=RED) data from equipment carrying unclassified (=BLACK) data, to prevent unintentional radio or electrical signals, containing classified data, emission. RED/BLACK separation in the power supply system is in general achieved by adding TEMPEST filters, but on board naval vessels the power system is insulated and the use of filter capacitances is limited. Solid-state uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) create isolation, because of the AC/DC and DC/AC conversion and associated internal filtering. Measurements have been performed on an operational UPS to determine the a-symmetrical, symmetrical and non-symmetrical isolation. The results obtained from the UPS tested show very good isolation which, combined with the already installed power line filters inside equipment, will be more than adequate to achieve the required isolation for RED/BLACK separation.

14 Oct 2003TL;DR: In this paper, a test setup for measuring the noise voltage in the reference of a system is presented, and the conditions for using the set-up are described and validation results are shown.
Abstract: A radiated emission is caused by unwanted antenna currents, often denoted as common mode currents. These currents are created by a noise voltage in the reference of a system. Test setup for measuring this noise voltage has been presented in this paper. The conditions for using the set-up are described and validation results are shown. The noise voltage measured in various printed circuit boards with ground planes with various widths, slits or grids is presented. The net partial inductance of these ground planes has been deduced from the measured noise voltage.

21 Aug 2015TL;DR: It is shown that the transfer impedance of such glands is greatly dependent on its shape, and how glands are mounted, thus poor screening effectiveness.
Abstract: An extensive number of standards provide various transfer impedance requirements and test methods for individual cables, but just a few are related to connectors. Only two standards describe how to test cable-gland-connector-receptacle assemblies. The cable-gland-connector-receptacle assembly has significant effects on the total considered impedance chain. In general the supplier for cable, gland and connector is different. For the introduction of commercial off the shelf connectors tests were performed on connectors and cable-connector sets, and inconsistent results were observed, showing extremely high transfer impedance, thus poor screening effectiveness. It is shown that the transfer impedance of such glands is greatly dependent on its shape, and how glands are mounted.

21 Jul 2018TL;DR: The aim is to develop robust predictive models on the basis of which learning instructions could be given to the trainees during game play to increase their learning journey and conclude that fit for purpose predictive models depend on domain knowledge in the specific field of application.
Abstract: This paper reports on an exploratory study utilizing data mining techniques to predict leadership constructs based on game play data. The learning objective of the game is (1) to become aware of devilish dilemmas during crisis situations, and (2) to understand ones’ leadership style in dealing with these dilemmas. Do player’s act like a People person, as an Administrator, or more like a Figurehead. We evaluate several data mining techniques to predict scoring on these ‘classes’. Our data set consists of 21600 instances. This data was captured over the last 4 years over the course of numerous training sessions for professionals in crisis management organizations in the Netherlands. We found that some algorithms perform significantly better than others in terms of predicting scoring on our test data. Our aim is to develop robust predictive models on the basis of which learning instructions could be given to the trainees during game play to increase their learning journey. However, we conclude that fit for purpose predictive models depend on domain knowledge in the specific field of application.
