Abstract: The humic acid (HA) fraction of soil organic matter (SOM) exerts an effective plant growth promotion through a complex mechanism involving a coordinated activation of several key ion transport and signaling systems. We investigated the effects of HA on H+ and Ca2+ cellular dynamics at the early stages of lateral plant root development. Emergence of lateral root in rice seedlings were related to specific H+ and Ca2+ fluxes in the root elongation zone underlying an activation of the plasma membrane H+-ATPase and of the Ca2+-dependent protein kinase (CDPK). The latter was coupled with an increased expression of the voltage-dependent OsTPC1 Ca2+channels and two stress responsive CDPK isoforms, such as OsCPK7 and OsCPK17. HA act as molecular elicitors of H+ and Ca2+ fluxes, which seem to be upstream of a complex CDPK cell-signaling cascade. These findings shed light on the first ion signaling events involved in the mechanism of action of HA on plant growth and development.

Abstract: Results obtained in our laboratories have provided evidence for the participation of the hypothalamic atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) neuronal system in the regulation of water and electrolyte homeostasis. The anterior ventral third ventricular (AV3V) region, a site of the perikarya of the ANP neurons, receives important afferent input from ascending serotoninergic axons. We hypothesized that the ascending serotoninergic tract might be involved in control of the liberation of ANP. Therefore, electrolytic lesions were produced in the mesencephalic dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), the site of perikarya of serotonin (5-HT) neurons whose axons project to the AV3V region. Rats with sham lesions constituted the control group. In a second group of animals, the serotoninergic system was depleted of 5-HT by lateral ventricular administration of p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA), an amino acid that causes depletion of 5-HT from the serotoninergic neurons. Control animals were injected with an equal amount of isotonic saline. The DRN lesions induced an increase of water intake and urine output beginning on the first day that lasted for 1 week after lesions were produced. There was a concomitant sodium retention that lasted for the same period of time. When water-loaded, DRN-lesioned and PCPA-injected animals showed diminished excretion of sodium, accompanied by a decrease in basal plasma ANP concentrations, and blockade of the increase in plasma ANP, which followed blood volume expansion by intraatrial injection of hypertonic saline. The results are interpreted to mean that ascending stimulatory serotoninergic input into the ANP neuronal system in the AV3V region produces a tonic stimulation of ANP release, which augments sodium excretion and inhibits water intake. Therefore, in the absence of this serotoninergic input following destruction of the serotoninergic neurons by DRN lesions or intraventricular injection of PCPA, an antinatriuretic effect is obtained that is associated with increased drinking, either because of sodium retention per se or removal of ANP-induced inhibition of release of the dipsogenic peptide, angiotensin II. The serotoninergic afferents also play an essential, stimulatory role in volume expansion-induced release of ANP and the ensuing natriuresis.

Abstract: The Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) is a zoonotic disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks of the genus Amblyomma, more frequently, Amblyomma cajennense. The aim of this paper was to report the first molecular detection of R. rickettsii on R. sanguineus naturally infected in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ticks were collected from dogs in a rural region of Resende municipality, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil (22o30'9.46"S, 44o42'44.29"WO), where occurred five human cases of BSF in 2006. The ticks were identified under a stereoscopic microscope and separated in pools by stages, species and sex. DNA extraction was carried out using QIAamp DNA Mini Kit (QIAGEN®). The DNA was submitted to PCR amplification using 04 set of primers: Rr190.70p/Rr190.602n (OmpA, 532bp), BG1-21/BG2-20 (OmpB, 650bp), Tz15/Tz16 (17 kDa protein-encoding gene, 246bp) and RpCS.877p/RpCS.1258n (gltA, 381bp). PCR products were separated by electrophoresis on 1% agarose gels and visualized under ultraviolet light with ethidium bromide. PCR products of the expected sizes were purified by QIAquick® and sequenced by ABI PRISM®. The generated nucleotide sequences were edited with using Bioedit® software and compared with the corresponding homologous sequences available through GenBank, using Discontiguous Mega Blast (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). It was confirmed R. rickettsii by sequencing of the material (GenBank FJ356230). The molecular characterization of R. rickettsii in the tick R. sanguineus emphasizes the role of dogs as carriers of ticks from the environment to home. Moreover, this result suggests that there is a considerable chance for active participation of R. sanguineus as one of tick species in the transmission of R. ricketsii to human being in the Brazilian territory.

Abstract: We discuss a variation of quadratic gravity in which the gravitational interaction remains weakly coupled at all energies, but is assisted by a Yang-Mills gauge theory which becomes strong at the Planck scale. The Yang-Mills interaction is used to induce the usual Einstein-Hilbert term, which was taken to be small or absent in the original action. We study the spin-two propagator in detail, with a focus on the high mass resonance which is shifted off the real axis by the coupling to real decay channels. We calculate scattering in the $J=2$ partial wave and show explicitly that unitarity is satisfied. The theory will in general have a large cosmological constant and we study possible solutions to this, including a unimodular version of the theory. Overall, the theory satisfies our present tests for being a ultraviolet completion of quantum gravity.
