Abstract: Barrels of the PMBSF of the mouse somatosensory cortex become apparent in Nissl-stained tangential sections simultaneously, on the fourth postnatal day. At this time they are miniatures of those in the adult and are situated in the deepest sublamina of the trilaminar cortical plate. An early barrel appears as a patch of decreased cell density: the prospective hollow of the barrel. Septa become noticeable during the sixth postnatal day. From that period to adulthood, the relative contribution of the PMBSF to the total cortical surface area increases -- an increase that goes against one's expectation: the barrel related periphery matures very early and so does the central, lateral region of the cortex. Barrel growth parallel to the pial surface is greater along the major axes than along the minor axes. By using the barrels to identify prospective layer IV in immature cortex, we could determine that layers V and VI attain their adult height during the sixth postnatal day -- an age when prospective layers I-IV are only half their adult height. The onset of barrel formation coincides with the moment after which injury to the pertinent somatosensory periphery (the vibrissal papillae) no longer causes profound alterations in barrel morphology.

Abstract: Quantitative analyses of abscisic acid (ABA) in different parts of maize root tips (Zea mays L. cv. Kelvedon 33) were performed by mass fragmentography using the hexadeuterated analog of ABA as internal standard. It was found that the cap and the apex contained 36.1 μg and 66.5 μg ABA kg−1 fresh weight, respectively. The possibility that the growth regulator formed in the cap and inhibiting the elongation of the extending zone of the root is ABA is discussed.

Abstract: Retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to identify two populations of cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the cat. HRP was injected into area 17 and 18 separately in the same animal, and the neuronal somata giving rise to thalamo-cortical axons, identified by the presence of granular HRP reaction product within them, were measured. The mean size of LGN neurones labelled by injections in area 17 (“17-relay” cells) was less than of neurones filled from area 18 (“18-relay” cells). Similar separate injections into area 17 and 18 of monocularly deprived kittens also showed that in non-deprived LGN laminae 17-relay cells were, on average, smaller than 18-relay cells. In deprived laminae, 17-relay cells were some 20% smaller than in nondeprived laminae, but deprived 18-relay cells were 50–60% smaller than normal, being on average, actually smaller than deprived 17-relay cells. We conclude that the population of large LGN neurones projecting to area 18 is more severely affected by monocular deprivation than the smaller neurones projecting to area 17, and discuss the relationship of the morphological results to physiologically defined X and Y cells in the LGN.

Abstract: The fine structure of the compound eye of adult specimens of Squilla mantis was investigated. The eye consists of about 3600–3700 ommatidia, each containing a dioptric apparatus formed by a lamellated corneal lens and a eucone-type crystalline cone. Each of the four cone cells give rise to a cylindrical process (crystalline thread) inserted between the retinula cells and extending down to the basement membrane. Two distal pigment cells completely encompass the distal part of the crystalline cone, becoming progressively smaller and forming roundish processes. At the level of the tip of the crystalline cone they split off into small pigment-containing processes, and a central process leads down to the basement membrane. About 12–16 proximal pigment cells surround the ommatidium and extend from the tip of the crystalline cone to the basement membrane. In addition to the two types of pigment cell, three other types of pigment-containing cells were identified, one of which possibly contains — on the basis of their ultrastructure — crystals of the respiratory pigment hemocyanin. The two other pigments are found respectively on the surface of the retina (green pigment) and beneath the surface and in the intraommatidial space (white pigment). The distal part of each ommatidium consists of retinula cells of about equal size. Further proximal an 8th small retinula cell is encountered. The fused, centrally located rhabdom, is built up of the microvilli (rhabdomeres) of the 7 large retinula cells, the 8th has no microvilli. The structure of the ommatidia was also examined in relation to light-dark adapted conditions (LA-DA). In DA the crystalline cone shortens and the rhabdom becomes longer by an approximately corresponding amount and the pigments of the distal pigment cells expand more distally. The number and type of special cytoplasmic inclusions, as well as the shape and size of the socalled perirhabdomal vacuoles, seems not to be changed by light or dark-adaptation. In the 7 large retinula cells, an unusual migration of pigment granules occurs under DA conditions (the 8th does not contain pigment granules). In DA, many of granules which are distributed around the rhabdom in LA, line up in rows, like strings of pearls, along the rhabdom, forming a dense pigment coat around it. The findings are compared with those of related studies and their functional implications for the vision of Squilla are discussed.

Abstract: The structural first-order phase transition of the layer structure (CP2H5NH3)2CdCl4 at 216 K is studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The low-temperature phase (OLT) belongs to the space group Pcab, whereas the room-temperature phase (ORT) belongs to the space group Bmab. In both structures, the hydrogen atoms are found from electron density maps. and their positions refined for the OLT phase. The organic residues are hydrogen-bonded to the layers formed by the corner-linked octahedra through the three H atoms of the ammonium ions. Due to the center of symmetry which lies in the center of the octahedra, the chains are placed on both sides of the layers. The free end of the alkyl chain is directed towards the inter-layer space, linking the next layer by van der Waals forces. The ORT phase has a disordered structure containing two statistically distributed and symmetry-equivalent chain positions. At the transition temperature Bmab-Pcab only one position of the chain remains, inducing thus a rearrangement of the structure characterised by the primitive space group symmetry. Die Raumgruppe der Raumtemperaturphase (ORT) ist Bmab, diejenige der Tieftemperaturphase (OLT) Pcab. Die Wasserstoffatome werden fur beide Strukturen in Elektronendichtekarten gefunden; in der OLT-Phase werden ihre Lageparameter verfeinert. Die Strukturen sind aus zentrosymmetrischen Schichten von eckenverknupften [CdCl6]-Oktaedern aufgebaut. Die organischen Kettenmolekeln sind uber die Wasserstoffatome der Ammoniumgruppen mit den Chloratomen auf beiden Seiten einer Schicht verbunden. Die Alkylgruppen verbinden benachbarte Schichten mit van-der-Waals-Kraften. In der ORT-Phase treten zwei statistisch verteilte, symmetrisch aquivalente Kettenpositionen auf. Die OLT-Phase ist geordnet, was auch eine Erniedrigung der Symmetrie einer Einzelschicht bedingt.

Abstract: (Z)-1-Alkylated propenes undergo metallation at an allylic site more rapidly than do their (E)-isomers, no matter in which configuration the resulting organometallic is thermodynamically more stable. A striking illustration is given by (Z)-4,4-dimethyl-2-pentenyl potassium which is formed 15 times faster than its (E)-isomer, although the latter is clearly favored under equilibrium conditions. The configurational reorganization of alkenylpotassium compounds in tetrahydrofuran solution is very slow. At least in one case, however, traces of oxygen efficiently catalyse the Z/E equilibration.

Abstract: Report is given on the first example in which the clinical and electrographic criteria of brain death were obtained at birth. Global destruction of the central nervous system of a type seen only with anoxia and circulatory failure had occurred in utero without appreciable disturbance of maternal health. Neuropathologic reaction in fetal tissues was identical with that which has been observed in the child or adult in the brain death syndrome. Functional disturbance of cerebral spinal circulation of sufficient degree to destroy neuronal tissue had happened without change in maternal circulation and without demonstrable lesions in the placenta or the cardiovascular apparatus of the fetus.

Abstract: Micro-injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were made into the visual cortex of the golden hamster. The “projection lines” of labelled neurons in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) were three-dimensionally reconstructed, using a computer graphics technique. The lines run rostrally and medially from their origins at the lateral surface of the nucleus. Using an anatomically determined retinotopic map of the LGNd, the positions of all labelled cells near the lateral surface were converted into equivalent visual field co-ordinates and displayed on a physiologically determined retinotopic map of the primary visual cortex. Comparison between the scatter of these equivalent retinotopic loci and an actual reconstruction of the injection site revealed that: 1. there was general agreement between the independent retinotopic maps of LGNd and visual cortex; 2. there was greater retinotopic scatter of labelled LGNd cells than could be accounted for by the area of tissue injury in the cortex; 3. the retinotopic scatter matched more closely the total visible halo of HRP staining in the grey matter; 4. HRP can be taken up from a cytoarchitectonic field into which it diffuses after injection into a neighbouring area; 5. HRP is probably not taken up by undamaged axons in the white matter. These results are compared with those obtained in other animals and other systems. No general rules emerge, but the possibility of uptake from wide areas of diffusion must be considered when interpreting results of HRP injection.

Abstract: In recent years the volume of activation Δ V* has become a powerful tool in chemical kinetics. High resolution NMR. spectroscopy is now one of the most common techniques used in the study of the kinetics of labile chemical systems. In order to measure Δ V* by this technique, we have built a 1H-probe-head, for a Fourier transform spectrometer, working up to 4 kbar and with a resolution of 0.6 Hz. The temperature is regulated and measured with an accuracy better than 0.2°. The high pressure probe-head has been tested on a chemical system showing a dissociative-associative crossover for the ligand substitution mechanism. It had been shown previously that the ligand exchange TaBr5 · L + *L ⇄ TaBr5 · *L + L proceeds via a D mechanism when L=Me2O, and via an Ia mechanism when L=Me2S. As expected, ΔV is positive (+30.5 ± 2.0 cm3 mol−1) for the dissociative process and negative (−12.6 ± 1.0 cm3 mol−1) for the associative one.

Abstract: The spirometric values (VC, FeV1, FEF25–75%) were studied in 44 workers of 17 chromium electroplating plants. Urinary chromium was also measured. The „dynamic values” of spirometry are lower amongst the workers who have higher urinary chromium. The part that can be attributed to tobacco smoking is much lower than that of chromium. The workers dealing with chromium electroplating in poor conditions seem to be subjects at risk in developing obstructive respiratory syndrome. The hazard seems to be especially high in plants dealing with hard chromium plating.
