TL;DR: The relatively rapid development and well-characterized biological parameters of Drosuphila melanogaster have facilitated this first report concerning polyamine levels throughout the life cycle of a multicellular organism.
Abstract: The significance of polyamines in biological processes has been recognized since the initial discovery of the requirement by Hemophilus parainfluenzae for either putrescine, spermidine or spermine as an essential growth factor.l3 Since this initial observation, the polyamines have been reported to be growth factors for various microorganisms,g plants,2 cultured mammalian cells,13 and insects.F+ In addition the polyamines have been implicated as prominent polycations, closely associated with nucleate biosynthesis in rapid growth systems including microorganisms,” regenerating rat The relatively rapid development and well-characterized biological parameters of Drosuphila melanogaster have facilitated this first report concerning polyamine levels throughout the life cycle of a multicellular organism. Larval, pupal, and adult stages of D . melanogaster have been previously demonstrated to contain spermidine and putrescine,x and the preferential association of spermidine with the cell nuclei of isolated larval salivary glands has been demonstrated by radioautographic procedures.* Also, the incorporation of labeled uridine into RNA of salivary gland nuclei is enhanced by exogenous spermidine, when added to organ-cultured salivary glands.8 The method of Seiler and Wiechmann,21 which relies on the conversion of spermidine and spermine to highly fluorescent I-dimethylaminonaphthalene-5sulfonamide (dansyl) derivatives, was employed for quantitative assays. However, the solvent system was modified to allow the simultaneous direct quantitation of dansyl putrescine, which could not be sufficiently resolved from dansyl ammonia by the original method. l.c and the chick

TL;DR: In this article, the authors pointed out that de Galan is guilty of the charge he has made against Willis and west(1), i.e., he has failed to consult all of the pertinent literature.
Abstract: Although we agree with the general discussion concerning the definitions of the terms sensitivity and detection limit made by de Galan(1), we must strongly suggest that to define sensitivity as the slope of the analytical curve is not entirely practical. Moreover, we would point out that Professor de Galan is apparently guilty of the charge he has made against Willis and west(1), i.e., he has failed to consult all of the pertinent literature. Specifically, he omitted reference to tlie definition of sensitivity presented by Mandel and Stiehler.(2,3) in 1954, two years prior to the first of a succession of papers on this topic by Kaiser(4–6). Therefore, to call attention to a very practical definition of sensitivity and to clarify some pertinent related points we offer the following comments.

TL;DR: The adequacy of Witkin's notion that significant relationships between measures of field-independence and intelligence can be explained on the basis of a common requirement for overcoming embedded contexts was questioned and an alternative interpretation was proposed and other lines of evidence consistent with this viewpoint were presented.
Abstract: This study was concerned with the nature of the relationship between measures of psychological differentiation and intellectual ability. Significant correlations ranging from –.21 to –.56 (N = 143) were obtained between field-independence measures and diverse measures of intellectual achievement many of which ostensibly have little or no relationship to embedding contexts, spatial-perceptual skills or non-verbal organization. The adequacy of Witkin's notion that significant relationships between measures of field-independence and intelligence can be explained on the basis of a common requirement for overcoming embedded contexts was questioned. An alternative interpretation was proposed and other lines of evidence consistent with this viewpoint were presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed an exclusion index based on the ratio of involuntary to voluntary commitments to mental hospitals with high ratios indicating high rejection or low community tolerance of deviance, and found that those who lack close social ties in the community are more likely to be excluded for deviance than those with such ties.
Abstract: This study tests three hypotheses concerning types of individuals who are likely to be excluded from a community for mental illness. An “exclusion index” is developed, based on the ratio of involuntary to voluntary commitments to mental hospitals with high ratios indicating high rejection or low community tolerance of deviance. The patient sample consists of 14,304 first admissions to the three State Mental Hospitals in Washington State, for the period 1957–1964.1. Communities have a greater propensity to exclude for deviance lower class persons and members of low status racial-ethnic groups. The findings indicate a substantially higher propensity to isolate nonwhite deviants. In addition, the community tendency to exclude members of six major racial-ethnic groups in the state (Caucasians, Chinese, Indians, Filipinos, Japanese, and Negroes) varied directly with a group's social distance from the dominant Caucasian population. 2.Those who lack close social ties in the community are more likely to be excluded for deviance than those with such ties. Persons who lived alone or with non-relatives had higher exclusion rates than persons living with their own families. The nonmarried are more likely to be excluded than the married, and persons not in the labor force are more likely to be excluded than those in the labor force.3. Communities have a greater propensity to exclude males for deviance than females. The current findings have implications for at least three current etiological theories of mental illness: the “social isolation hypothesis” the “socioeconomic deprivation hypothesis”; and the “sociocultural fit hypothesis”. Differential community reaction to mental deviance may account for at least some of the observed excess incidence of hospitalized mental disorders among the socially isolated, the economically deprived as well as among culturally different members of the community.

TL;DR: The transfer of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from bacteriophage SP82G to its host may be halted by chilling but is affected little by chloramphenicol, actinomycin D, or cyanide.
Abstract: The transfer of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from bacteriophage SP82G to its host may be halted by chilling but is affected little by chloramphenicol, actinomycin D, or cyanide. The order of entry of markers on the phage genome was determined by halting the transfer of DNA at intervals, removing the untransferred DNA by blending, and assaying for the presence of markers in the blended complexes. Markers on the phage genome are transferred in a linear, polar fashion consistent with the previously determined genetic and physical maps. Those markers concerned with early functions enter first, and the rate of transfer is temperature dependent.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple method is presented to measure the complex modulus of suitably rigid, linear viscoelastic materials over the audio-frequency spectrum, where one end of a rod of the material is driven harmonically and the complex displacement ratio is measured.
Abstract: A simple method is presented to measure the complex modulus of suitably rigid, linear viscoelastic materials over the audio-frequency spectrum. The case is considered where one end of a rod of the material is driven harmonically and the complex displacement ratio is measured. The effect of a rigid end mass on the free end is accounted for. It is shown that, at specific frequencies near resonance, it is easy to obtain modulus data with standard equipment usually found in the vibration laboratory.

TL;DR: The inheritance and description of a lethal condition involving sireniform abnormalities in mice are reported and symmelia was produced by homozygosity for an incomplete recessive gene provisionally called siren (symbol srn).
Abstract: The inheritance and description of a lethal condition involving sireniform abnormalities in mice are reported. Symmelia was produced by homozygosity for an incomplete recessive gene provisionally called siren (symbol srn). Sirens were apodal, monopodal, or dipodal. with the ischia present as a vestigial structure or missing. Femora, when present, were medially placed and usually fused. Pubes and tibiae were abnormal in some cases, and fibulae usually were. Visceral defects included absent or abnormal kidneys and adrenals, and blind or undeveloped intestines.

TL;DR: The ultrastructure of E. tenella asexual stages cultivated in vitro appears similar to that reported from in vivo material.
Abstract: Primary cultures of embryonic chick kidney cells, inoculated with freshly excysted Eimeria tenella sporozoites, were grown in Leighton tubes containing Melinex coverslips. After penetration of the host cell, several micropores appear in the pellicle of the sporozoite. Most intracellular sporozoites possess only one paranuclear body. The cytoplasm of an early segmenting schizont contains many ribosomes, a highly developed endoplasmic reticulum, and large spherical electron-pale vesicles. The nuclei of the first generation merozoites, lying in cytoplasmic protrusions of the schizont, later separate from the mother cell, thus forming a new generation. Essentially, the ultrastructure of E. tenella asexual stages cultivated in vitro appears similar to that reported from in vivo material.

TL;DR: In this article, the impact of use value assessment on the property tax base and tax rate in New Hampshire has been analyzed using data from a cross-sectional sample or assigned values and varied parametrically.
Abstract: 5M /'ANY states are using or contemplating using use value in place of ad valorem assessment and taxation to influence urban expansion and land use [2]. This note attempts to provide quantitative estimates of the impact of use value assessment on the property tax base and tax rate. Although New Hampshire data are used in this analysis, the approach is sufficiently general to be applicable elsewhere. The impact of use value assessment depends on (1) the amount of total property valuation that qualifies for use value assessment, (2) the amount of eligible assessed valuation that participates in the program, and (3) the amount of taxes that are abated on the participating valuation. Because a use value assessment law does not currently exist in New Hampshire, these variables were either estimated from a cross-sectional sample or assigned values and varied parametrically. The amount of property valuation qualifying for use value assessment was estimated for each town (municipality) in the state. The estimating procedure consisted of first estimating the qualifying valuation for a sample of towns and then projecting the results of the sample to all towns in the state. Qualifying valuation was defined as the valuation of nonurban property. The amount of qualified valuation that enrolls or participates in a use value tax program depends on the economic incentives of the program. The impact of use value assessment was computed for five levels of participation, which varied from 10 to 90 percent of the qualified valuation. The amount of tax abatement on the participating valuation is the major incentive of a use value assessment tax program. The impact of use value assessment was computed for three levels of abatement; these varied from 30 to 75 percent of current taxes under the present system of ad valorem taxation. These variables were combined in a model designed to provide quantitative estimates of the immediate impact of use value assessment

TL;DR: This is the first time (to the author's knowledge) that oxygen consumption has been predicted by telemetry of pulmonary ventilation for such sports as squash, handball, and track and for many other physical activities.
Abstract: A four-channel frequency-modulation radio-telemetry system for the measurement of two electrocardiograms (EKGs), respiration rate, and pulmonary ventilation of human subjects during vigorous exercise is described. From the measurement of pulmonary ventilation, the oxygen uptake (and thus energy expenditure) was predicted. This is the first time (to the author's knowledge) that oxygen consumption has been predicted by telemetry of pulmonary ventilation for such sports as squash, handball, and track. The transmitter uses pulse-duration modulation. It has a range of approximately 100 meters, which may be extended by using a whip antenna. Linearity of the system is 2 percent or better from a best straight line, and baseline drift is less than 1 percent at 25°C. The telemetry transmitter weighs approximately 100 grams and is contained in two boxes measuring 5 by 5 by 1.25 cm. Construction of this system is considerably simplified through extensive use of integrated circuits. A complete transmitter costs about $50 (for components only) and dissipates approximately 60 mW. The batteries used provide a continuous life of 125 hours. The system has been used to obtain data from persons participating in squash, handball, track, and tennis. It may be used for many other physical activities.

TL;DR: A faunal list of intertidal macrofauna collected from Long Island sand habitats during fall 1967 is presented in this paper. But this list is limited to four haustoriid amphipod species.
Abstract: This constitutes a faunal list of intertidal macrofauna collected from Long Island sand habitats during fall 1967. A total of 265 animals in 12 species was collected, of which 218 (82%) were members of four haustoriid amphipod species. These amphipods make up 50–90% of the standing crop of macrofaunal animals from aerobic intertidal sands from Maine to Georgia. *** DIRECT SUPPORT *** A00BY037 00005
