TL;DR: Of the nine biological trace elements, zinc, copper and selenium are important in reproduction in males and females and the level of testosterone in the male has been suggested to play a role in the severity of copper deficiency.
Abstract: Of the nine biological trace elements, zinc, copper and selenium are important in reproduction in males and females. Zinc content is high in the adult testis, and the prostate has a higher concentration of zinc than any other organ of the body. Zinc deficiency first impairs angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity, and this in turn leads to depletion of testosterone and inhibition of spermatogenesis. Defects in spermatozoa are frequently observed in the zinc-deficient rat. Zinc is thought to help to extend the functional life span of the ejaculated spermatozoa. Zinc deficiency in the female can lead to such problems as impaired synthesis/secretion-of (FSH) and (LH), abnormal ovarian development, disruption of the estrous cycle, frequent abortion, a prolonged gestation period, teratogenicity, still-births, difficulty in parturition, pre-eclampsia, toxemia and low birth weights of infants. The level of testosterone in the male has been suggested to play a role in the severity of copper deficiency. Copper-deficient female rats are protected against mortality due to copper deficiency, and the protection has been suggested to be provided by estrogens, since estrogens alter the subcellular distribution of copper in the liver and increase plasma copper levels by inducing ceruloplasmin synthesis. The selenium content of male gonads increases during pubertal maturation. Selenium is localized in the mitochondrial capsule protein (MCP) of the midpiece. Maximal incorporation in MCP occurs at steps 7 and 12 of spermatogenesis and uptake dereases by step 15. Selenium deficiency in females results in infertility, abortions and retention of the placenta. The newborns from a selenium-deficient mother suffer from muscular weakness, but the concentration of selenium during pregnancy does not have any effect on the weight of the baby or length of pregnancy. The selenium requirements of a pregnant and lactating mother are increased as a result of selenium transport to the fetus via the placenta and to the infant via breast milk.

TL;DR: The data revealed that reversible sterility could be induced in male rats by papaya seeds aqueous extract treatment without adverse effects on libido and toxicological profile.
Abstract: The influence of the crude aqueous extract of Carica papaya L. (Caricaceae) seeds has been studied on semen profile, fertility, body and organ weight response, and toxicology in male albino rats. The extract was administered at the dose regimens of 10 and 50 mg/animal/day orally for 30, 60, and 90 days and 0.1 and 1.0 mg/animal/day intramuscularly for 15 and 30 days. Cauda epididymal sperm motility and count was reduced significantly at low and high dose regimens both in the oral as well as the intramuscular groups. The reduced sperm motility was associated with morphological defects. Testicular sperm counts were also reduced in all the treatment groups except the low dose intramuscular group. Fertility tests showed dose- and duration-dependent reduction and zero fertility was observed at high dose regimens of the oral and intramuscular groups following 60 and 30 days of treatment, respectively. Testicular weight was reduced in all the treatment groups, whereas accessory sex organs showed a variable response. Body weight and toxicological observations did not show any untoward response. Fertility and all other associated changes returned to normal within 45 and 30 days of treatment cessation in the oral and intramuscular groups, respectively. The data revealed that reversible sterility could be induced in male rats by papaya seeds aqueous extract treatment without adverse effects on libido and toxicological profile.

TL;DR: In this paper, the oblique propagation of ion-acoustic solitons in a magnetized low-β plasma consisting of warm positive and negative ion species along with hot electrons is studied.
Abstract: Oblique propagation of ion-acoustic solitons in a magnetized low-β plasma consisting of warm positive and negative ion species along with hot electrons is studied. Using the reductive perturbation method, a KdV equation is derived for the system, which admits an obliquely propagating soliton solution. It is found that if the ions have finite temperatures then there exist two types of modes, namely slow and fast ion-acoustic modes. The parameter determining the nature of soliton (i.e. whether the system will support compressive or rarefactive solitons) is different for slow and fast modes. For the slow mode the parameter is the relative temperature of the two ion species, whereas for the fast mode it is the relative concentraion of the two ion species. For the fast mode it is found that there is a critical value of the negative-ion concentration below which only compressive solitons exist and above which rarefactive solitons exist. To discuss the soliton solution at the critical concentration, a modified KdV equation is derived. It is found that- at the critical concentration of negative ions compressive and rarefactive solitons co-exist. The effects of temperature of different ion species, angle of obliqueness and magnetization on the characteristics of the solitons are discussed in detail

TL;DR: Inhibition of spermatogenesis indicates for decreased zinc levels in 3-week whereas the increase in 6-week experiment indicates for accumulation of zinc in oedomatous fluid and uncontrolled diffusion of zinc across the blood testis barrier.
Abstract: Zinc, protein, cholesterol, phospholipids, alkaline phosphatase (AlPase), acid phosphatase (AcPase), adenosine-5-triphosphatase(ATPase) and histology were studied in testis of zinc-deficient mice. Zinc and protein decreased in the 3-week experiment whereas they increased in the 6-week experiment. Zinc is involved in several functions of the cell and is regulated by hormones. Inhibition of spermatogenesis indicates for decreased zinc levels in 3-week whereas the increase in 6-week experiment indicates for accumulation of zinc in oedomatous fluid and uncontrolled diffusion of zinc across the blood testis barrier. Glycogen decreased in the 3-week as well as 6-week experiments due to blockage of androgen and spermatogenesis. Cholesterol and phospholipids increased in the 3-week experiment and decreased in 6-week experiment as both the parameters are related to steroidogenesis. Zinc deficiency leads to aspermatogenic condition and comparatively less injury to non-germinal cells. This could have blocked the transport of material across the testis barrier and therefore might have increased AlPase levels. Increased AcPase, probably represents lysosomal enzymes, as the cell debris of disorganised epithelium are to be digested and removed. ATPase increased in 3-week experiment and can be correlated to increased demands of energy of testicular cells to overcome the insults of zinc deficiency whereas the decrease in 6-week experiment could be as a result of inhibition of spermatogenesis.

Abstract: Two-phase systems are assumed to contain spherical particles arranged in a three-dimensional cubic array. A general expression for porosity correction has been derived for diverse two-phase systems from experimental results reported in the literature. The correction term is found to be dependent on the ratio of thermal conductivities of the constituent phases of the system and gives better agreement of predicted effective thermal conductivity values with experimental results.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of variations in the density and temperature ratios of the two electron species, the ion temperature, the angle of obliqueness and the magnetization on the characteristics of the cnoidal wave are discussed in detail.
Abstract: Obliquely propagating ion-acoustic nonlinear periodic waves in a magnetized plasma consisting of warm adiabatic ions and two Maxwellian electron species are studied. Using the reductive perturbation method, the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation is derived and its cnoidal wave solution is discussed. It is found that as the amplitude of the cnoidal wave increases, so does its frequency. The effects of variations in the density and temperature ratios of the two electron species, the ion temperature, the angle of obliqueness and the magnetization on the characteristics of the cnoidal wave are discussed in detail. When the coefficient of the nonlinear term of the KdV equation, a1, vanishes, the modified Korteweg–de Vries equation is derived, and its periodic-wave solutions are discussed in detail. In the limiting case these periodic-wave solutions reduce to soliton or double-layer solutions.

TL;DR: In this article, the stoichiometric formulae [Fe{S2P(OPr-n)2}3] and [S2PO2G}3 ] are precipitated from the reactions of FeCl3 with ammonium dithiophosphates in water.
Abstract: Solids of the stoichiometric formulae [Fe{S2P(OPr-n)2}3] and [Fe{S2PO2G}3] (G = —CH2CMe2CH2—, CMe2−CMe2— or —CH2CH2CHMe—) are precipitated from the reactions of FeCl3 with ammonium dithiophosphates in water. Soluble complexes of the type [Fe{S2PO2G}2], formed by the reactions of FeCl2 with NH4[{S2PO2G}] in MeOH, can be extracted with benzene. Adducts of the types [Fe{S2PO2G}2L] and [Fe{S2PO2G}2(PPh3)2] are formed by the reaction of [Fe{S2PO2G}2] with L (L = 2,2′-bipyridyl or 1,10-phenanthroline) and PPh3, respectively. All the compounds have been characterized by i.r. and u.v.-vis. spectroscopy and magnetic studies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the P[sbnd]C3 bond of the azaphosphole ring was used to give the zwitterionic 4,5-dihydrooxazolio phosphinate 3.
Abstract: 2-Ethyl-3-phenacyl-4,5-dihydrooxazolium bromide 1 enolizes spontaneously in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. Condensation with phosphorus trichloride nevertheless involves both the methylene groups in 2-and 3-position and thus yields a five-membered ring. Hydrolysis of the resulting 1-methyl-3-benzoyl-5,6-dihydro-1,3-azaphospholo[5,1-b]oxazole 2 selectively opens the P[sbnd]C3 bond of the azaphosphole ring to give the zwitterionic 4,5-dihydrooxazolio phosphinate 3.

TL;DR: In this article, the preparation, characterisation and biological activities of some oxovanadium(V) and manganese(II) complexes of ligands having nitrogen-sulphur donor sets are described.
Abstract: The preparation, characterisation and biological activities of some oxovanadium(V) and manganese(II) complexes of ligands having nitrogen-sulphur donor sets are described. Reaction of VOCl3 and MnCl2 with HTSCZ (HTSCZ = thiosemicarbazone) resulted in the formation of complexes of the type [VOCl2(TSCZ)], [MnCl(TSCZ)H2O], [VOCl(TSCZ)2] and [Mn(TSCZ)2]. These have been characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weight determinations and conductivity measurements and found to be monomeric and nonelectrolytes. Distorted trigonal bipyramidal (1∶1) and octahedral (1∶2) geometries for the vanadium(V) complexes and a tetrahedral geometry for the manganese(II) complexes are proposed. All the free ligands and their complexes have been tested in vitro against a number of pathogenic fungi and bacteria and were found to possess good fungicidal and bactericidal properties.

Abstract: The first measurement of the Compton profile of polycrystalline yttrium is reported. The data, obtained using 59.54 keV gamma-rays are compared with available APW band structure calculations, with and without electron correlation effects. Theoretical computations have also been carried out using the renormalized-free-atom (RFA) model for various 4d-5s configurations. It is found that the present experimental data are in better agreement with the APW band structure calculation without an electron correlation correction. Among the RFA calculations, the best agreement between theory and experiment is found if the outer electron configuration is chosen as 4d1 5s2.
