TL;DR: Findings relevant to the GFAP-mapping of the whole rat CNS are evaluated with regard to possible reasons underlying the observed differential distribution ofGFAP-immunoreactivity.
Abstract: The topographical mapping of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-immunoreactivity was performed in coronal serial sections of the rat mesencephalon, rhombencephalon and spinal cord. Relative to a background of poor or moderate overall staining of the mesencephalon, the interpeduncular nucleus, substantia nigra and the periaqueductal grey matter were prominent by their intense GFAP-immunoreactivity. The pons and particularly the medulla contained more GFAP-labelled elements compared with the mesencephalon. The spinal trigeminal nucleus and Rolando substance were distinguished by their intense staining. Large fibre tracts were usually poor in immunoreactive GFAP. In a concluding discussion, findings relevant to the GFAP-mapping of the whole rat CNS are evaluated with regard to possible reasons underlying the observed differential distribution of GFAP-immunoreactivity.

TL;DR: While butyrate reduced DNA synthesis, insulin produced an increase over the control and combined butyrates plus insulin treatment influenced the incorporation of label in accordance with the relative proportion of these two substances.
Abstract: Rumen epithelial cells (REC) were incubated in the presence of various concentrations of butyrate or insulin or with both of them, to obtain information on their effect on the DNA synthesis of cultured cells. The 24-h values of3H-thymidine incorporation into cellular DNA were measured in the presence of butyrate, insulin or butyrate plus insulin. While butyrate reduced DNA synthesis, insulin produced an increase over the control. Combined butyrate plus insulin treatment influenced the incorporation of label in accordance with the relative proportion of these two substances.

TL;DR: Out of a total of 224 bovine eye secretions, 126 Moraxella bovis and 64 Neisseria ovis strains were isolated and proved nearly unanimously sensitive in vitro to chloramphenicol, neomycin, oxytetracyclin, nitrofurantoin, erythromycin and cefoperazone.
Abstract: Out of a total of 224 bovine eye secretions, 126 Moraxella bovis and 64 Neisseria ovis strains were isolated. The pathogenesis and histological lesions caused by Neisseria ovis have been studied on the eyes of three calves naturally affected with IBK, using electron microscopy. Neisseria ovis caused in 1-12 weeks old calves acute, transient and mostly benign serous conjunctivitis with only slight affection of the cornea. More rarely erosions and even ulceration of the cornea have been observed. Moraxella bovis and Neisseria ovis strains proved nearly unanimously sensitive in vitro to chloramphenicol, neomycin, oxytetracyclin, nitrofurantoin, erythromycin and cefoperazone. Other antibiotics and chemotherapeutics inhibited the growth of these agents only partly or were ineffective. Experimental therapy has been carried out using a single i.m. injection of Terramycin/LA inj. (Pfizer) in a dose of 20 mg/kg body mass, repeated if necessary after 72-96 h. This formulation proved more effective and practical than treatments used earlier.

TL;DR: Symptoms characteristic of malabsorption syndrome may be elicited by maldigestion; in the present study, this probably resulted from reduced digestive enzyme production of the pancreas.

TL;DR: When the rate of ruminal epithelial cell proliferation was measured on the basis of 3H-thymidine incorporation into the cellular DNA, butyrate dose-dependently reduced 3H
Abstract: When the rate of ruminal epithelial cell proliferation was measured on the basis of 3H-thymidine incorporation into the cellular DNA, butyrate dose-dependently reduced 3H-thymidine incorporation. In contrast, glucagon at 10 and 100 pg/ml had a slight stimulatory effect on the incorporation, but only in the absence of butyrate.

TL;DR: Thyroid function of broilers inoculated with the intestinal homogenate from birds from a field case of malabsorption syndrome was investigated during the first 2 days postinoculation, highlighting the importance of thyroid impairment in the pathogenesis of mal absorption syndrome.
Abstract: Thyroid function of broilers inoculated with the intestinal homogenate from birds from a field case of malabsorption syndrome was investigated during the first 2 days postinoculation. In one experiment, different amounts of the inoculum were applied to see if there exists a dose-response relationship. As early as 3 hours after inoculation, there was a significant drop in the serum level of triiodothyronine and in the activity of the liver 5'-deiodinase (type I). Type II deiodinase activity was less impaired. A minimum of 0.3 ml of inoculum was effective, whereas 0.05 ml of the same homogenate elicited a significant (P less than 0.01) drop in liver deiodinase activity. These findings underline the importance of thyroid impairment in the pathogenesis of malabsorption syndrome.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the aminostatic component of food intake regulation in piglets does not begin to operate until the weaning period and does not produce a downward trend in food intake of piglets at 9-10 d of age.
Abstract: The effect of single intraperitoneal 1 g.kg-1 doses of a solution of 20 amino acids (AA) on food intake was investigated in 20 piglets examined repeatedly between 2 and 26 days of age. The animals were reared individually from day 1 after birth in cages and bottle-fed a liquid diet nine times per day at two-hour intervals from 6 to 22 h. Although amino acid administration did not significantly affect plasma concentrations of total free AA throughout the experiment (as measured just before and 2 and 5 h after AA administration in blood withdrawn from the external jugular vein) it did produce a downward trend in food intake of piglets at 9-10 d of age. In older animals, the depressive effect on food intake was significantly greater and lasted longer. It is suggested that the aminostatic component of food intake regulation in piglets does not begin to operate until the weaning period.

TL;DR: Vibratome sections of perfusion-fixed rat and monkey cerebella were incubated with an antiserum to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and it was concluded that current methods enable fine interspecies differences of GFAP-localization to be demonstrated.
Abstract: Vibratome sections of perfusion-fixed rat and monkey cerebella were incubated with an antiserum to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Immunolabelled elements showed in both species a principally similar distribution but the presence of long, transverse branches of Bergmann fibres was found to be characteristic to the monkey cerebellum. It is concluded that current methods enable fine interspecies differences of GFAP-localization to be demonstrated. This bears a relevance to the use of GFAP-immunostaining as a diagnostic tool in neuropathology.
