Abstract: The photoelectrochemical properties of the polycrystalline doped with 3d transition metals (Cr, Mn, V, Cu, Ni, and Zn) have been investigated. The electrodes doped with Cr, Mn, V, and Cu show the visible light photoresponses. It is concluded that the visible light photoresponse is based on the impurity band formed near the π* conduction band of the in energy position, in analogy with the Co‐doped electrode reported previously. The cathodic photocurrent of the reduction was also observed for the doped and undoped electrodes. From the good agreement of the spectral dependences of the anodic and cathodic photocurrents, it is judged that both type photocurrents are brought about by the same photoexcitation process. The observed large cathodic photocurrents for the electrodes that give the visible light photoresponse are attributable to the d‐orbitals of the doped metal as the active site, by which the impurity band is formed in the bulk. A mechanism for the photosynthesis is also suggested from the simultaneous appearance of the photo‐oxidation and photoreduction currents on an electrode.

Abstract: The effects of NH4 + and NO3 - as nitrogen sources on the growth of two subspecies of rice, Oriza saliva subsp. Indica and Oriza saliva subsp. Japonica, during the first 6 weeks of growth were studied by the water culture method. The results obtained indicated that Indica and Japonica rice plants respond differently to NO3 -. Although both Indica and Japonica grew fairly well in solutions containing the two forms of nitrogen, the growth of the former was superior in NO3 - than in NH4 ++NO3 - or NH4 + solutions, especially at relatively low nitrogen concentrations, whereas the growth of the latter was inferior in NO3 - than in NH4 ++NO3 -solutions. In addition, plants of both subspecies fed with NH4 + showed growth retardation wtih tip-burning of the lower leaves and poorly branched roots. On the other hand, under moderately warmed glass house conditions with natural sunlight in winter, the growth of Indica in NO3 - solution was appreciably reduced compared to that in NH4 ++NO3 -. Abstract: Thermal shrinkage of highly hot-drawn and quenched poly(methyl methacrylate) and polycarbonate of bisphenol A were measured. PMMA shows three-step thermal shrinkage under suitable experimental conditions above its glass transition temperature (Tg). Polycarbonate exhibits four kinds of molecular relaxation associated with shrinkage around and above its Tg. The effect of hot-drawing and quenching conditions on shrinking behavior is discussed. Almost all of the molecular relaxations are observed above Tg. The molecular origins of the relaxations are discussed in relation with the so-called T11 transitions of polymers.

Abstract: Studies on the social behavior, territory, and pair duration of Japanese Wagtail Motacilla grandis were carried out from October 1978 to March 1981 at Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, central Honshu. Most observations were made on colour-ringed birds. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The territorial behavior of Japanese Wagtails observed in the study area consisted mainly of chasing, ceremonial fight and combat (Fig. 2). The displays between a male and a female were female's appeasement display and male's bill-opening display. 2) Most of Japanese Wagtails lived in pairs and each pair had a definite territory in winter. There was little change in the location of territories and in the mates of pairs from October to January. 3) In February some changes were found in territories and mates, i.e. nine out of eleven pairs changed their mates. The mating season was generally from late February to early March. 4) In winter 10-20 individuals gathered for feeding in the temporary dried up areas. No territorial behavior was seen in such feeding place. Some of them had their territories outside of the feeding place, whereas others had no territories and were wandering from one place to another.

Abstract: An optical line shape for E → T 2 transition in tetrahedral symmetry has been calculated for the case where both the ground and the T 2 excited states are coupled to an e vibrational mode. The effect of quadratic Jahn-Teller coupling in the ground state on vibronic fine structure is investigated. The calculated result has been compared with the GRl absorption band in diamond. The origin of a 40 meV sideband observed experimentally has been explored within the framework of the Jahn-Teller interaction following the suggestion by Davies and Foy. It has been shown that its energy position and relative intensity can be explained, if the quadratic coupling of e - t in the T 2 excited state is taken into account.

Abstract: ハ クセキレイMotacilla albaの1亜 種M.a.lugensは,日 本では北海道と本州北部で繁 殖す るとされているが(日 本鳥学会,1974),近 年その繁殖分布を次第に南下させている. この南下は,本 土から少 し離れた小さな島と本土の海岸線に沿 って進む傾向があ り,内 陸 部にはほとんど入 っていない(中 村,1787,1980).と ころが,こ こ数年,典 型的な内陸 部である栃木県内で,ハ クセキレイ(上 記の亜種であると思われ る)の 繁殖が観察される ようになった,栃 木県を含めて本州各地では,内 陸部にはハク セキレイに近縁のセグロセ キレイM.grnndisが すみついている.ハ クセキレイの繁殖分布が南下す るに さい して内 陸部が除外されてきたことには,こ のセグロセキレイの存在が関係していたものと思われ る.こ の点で,栃 木県内で近年ハ クセキレイが繁殖するようになったことは興味深い. 本論文は,栃 木県におけるハ クセキレイの繁殖記録を整理するとともに,内 陸部におけ るこの種の繁殖環境を明らかにすることを目的 としている.繁 殖環境については,セ グロ セキレイとの関係に留意して述べ,ハ クセキレイの内陸部への定着がいかに して可能 とな ったのかを考察する.

Abstract: The newly developed cutting tool, Sumiboron BN200, is made of a special ceramic which is heat resistant, wear resistant and has a lower affinity for a workpiece material. The following experimental results were obtained:

Grains of BN200 showed attritious wear in a wide range of cutting conditions.
2)
The bonding material of BN 200 was removed to such an extent by formed chips that grains were projected. Abrasive wear was partly observed.
3)
In dry cutting of ASTM4118 and wet cutting of ASTM 5046, the tool life of BN200 was found to be increased by respectively 3~5.7 times that of a conventional CBN cutting tool.

Abstract: The K-absorption spectrum of pure vanadium undergoes remarkable changes when hydrogen or deuterium is added to the metal: fine structures near the K-edge diminish and become indistinct with a progressive upward shift of the edge, and other structures well above the edge are lowered in energy. These changes suggest that an electronic structure with p-component above the Fermi level is strongly perturbed by the presence of interstitial hydrogen atoms. The data are discussed in the light of current band calculations on vanadium and its hydrides.

Abstract: Stepwise progress of the relation between amino acids and nucleotides in the origin of protein synthesis mechanism is speculated. As an experimental support for the speculation, the effect of polynucleotide and polypeptide on the polypeptide formation is tested. Basic protein, histone, promotesthe reaction of polypeptide formation from aminoacyl adenylate. The relation between origin and development of genetic code and incerasing of invariable site in protein in the course of molecular evolution is discussed. Learning system is thought to have some analogy with Darwinian evolution.

Abstract: The effect of protein depletion and repletion on the contents of rat body collagen and muscle protein has been investigated. Adult male rats were placed on a protein-free diet for 64 days, and thereafter fed with a 20% casein diet for 83 days. Total nitrogen, hydr oxyproline and Nτ-methylhistidine were determined in several tissues. Skin collagen was fractionated into neutral salt-soluble, acid-soluble and insoluble collagen.In prolonged protein depletion, the total amounts of liver protein, skin collagen and muscle protein were markedly decreased, while carcass collagen (excluding skin) showed little effect. The concentrations of skin and carcass collagen were significantly increased in protein depleted rats. Some differences in metabolism between skin collagen and other carcass collagen were discussed.After 64 days of depletion, refeeding on an adequate protein diet brought about a rapid increase in body weight, liver protein and muscle protein. Abstract: 視覚代行の試みとして, 聴覚を利用する方法を検討し実験装置を作った. この装置はイメージセンサーによって視空間情報を25×25個の画素に分割し, その黒レベル信号を音パターンに出力する. 変換方法は, 縦軸を周波数情報, 横軸を両耳に加える音の強度情報とし, 左から右へ一定速度で出力を呈示する.実験によると, 出力パターンの呈示時間は2.0sec以上あると知覚されやすいことがわかった. また, 訓練によるとカタカナは90%, アルファベットは91%以上判別可能であることが示された. さらに, 実験結果を階層クラスター分析し, パターン間の類似性をデンドログラムによって考察した.このような知見は, 図形や障害物を察知するための盲人用視覚代行器に, 今後, 応用できるものと思われる.
