TL;DR: The results indicate that normal children experience auditory fusion at shorter time intervals than is true for reading disordered or learning disabled children, that signal intensity affects auditory fusion for allgroups, and that only the learningdisabled children are differentially affected by the frequency (hertz) of the stimulus tones.
Abstract: One hundred thirty-five children aged 7 through 9 years were asked to indicate whether they heard one or two sounds when presented with 270 separate pairs of tones Each pair consisted of two tones separated by a silent interval that varied from 0 through 40msec The frequencies of the tones that comprised the pairs were 250 through 4,000 Hz at one-octave intervals These stimuli were presented at three sensation levels: 20, 40, and 60dB All sensation levels and frequencies were rotated to control for order and practice effects The results indicate that normal children experience auditory fusion at shorter time intervals than is true for reading disordered or learning disabled children, that signal intensity affects auditory fusion for allgroups, and that only the learning disabled children are differentially affected by the frequency (hertz) of the stimulus tones

TL;DR: The study of variant residues indicate that the prokaryotic and eukaryotic tRNA's, although stemming from a common “proto” tRNA, have evolved in two directions, and Interestingly, tRNA structure has not changed drastically during this evolution.
Abstract: Publisher Summary The chapter discusses the structure, function, and evolution of transfer RNAs (tRNA). A comparison of the sequences of tRNA's has provided new and supportive information concerning: (a) secondary and tertiary structures; (b) minor modified nucleotides and their possible roles; and (c) binding sites for specific and nonspecific interactions between tRNA and the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase. The statistical data reveal that invariant or conserved nucleotides are present in each prokaryotic and eukaryotic tRNA. These invariant positions, determined for >60% and >90% of the tRNA's, suggest evolutionary or “primordial” structures that may have differentiated into the highly specific structures required for the aminoacylation process. The study of variant residues indicate that the prokaryotic and eukaryotic tRNA's, although stemming from a common “proto” tRNA, have evolved in two directions. Interestingly, tRNA structure has not changed drastically during this evolution. A statistical analysis of 129 tRNA's from eukaryotic, prokaryotic, and viral sources is carried out in an attempt to answer the following questions, which are: (a) what are the invariant (conserved) nucleoloids in tRNAs, (b) is the tertiary structure of yeast tRNA Phe representative of the tertiary bonds in other tRNAs, (c) what is the nature of the modified nucleotides in tRNAs, (d) what, if any, are the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic modifications, (e) how does the T-ψ-C sequence, a feature of most tRNAs, vary in certain tRNAs, (f) can the chapter predict one or more specific interaction sites between tRNA and the cognate synthetase after determining the variant and the invariant residues between the isoacceptor sequences.

Abstract: Summary: Study of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy and generalized epilepsy revealed no overall seizure type differences, nor overall age-at-onset effects, on MMPI measures of psychopathology. However, statistically significant interactions between seizure type and age at onset were obtained on several MMPI measures, and subsequent analyses revealed that patients with adolescent-onset temporal lobe epilepsy are at higher risk of developing psychological dysfunctions.

TL;DR: In this article, the Gordon-Howell and Pierson reports led to a complete rethinking of real estate instruction at the university level, and two versions of this approach are the (1) multidisciplinary and (2) financial management.
Abstract: We are making headway, with difficulty, in our understanding and teaching of real estate subject matter. Until about 1960, heavy emphasis was on license preparation, salesmanship and professional development. The Gordon-Howell and Pierson reports led to a complete rethinking of real estate instruction at the university level. A problem solving approach is currently the key to respectability. Two versions of this approach are the (1) multidisciplinary and (2) financial management. Highest and best use promises to provide an acceptable social ethic for real estate education and implies the need for efficient real estate markets for optimum allocation of resources.

Abstract: The general outline of our method is to that of of the second author second order elliptic parabolic equations [S, 71. of our effort is in deriving estimates for linear equations which lead to for the FrCchet derivatives of the relevant nonlinear to which Section 2 devoted, appear to be sharp in to explained below, and feel are independent interest. are stated in and the existence theorems developed in 4. a concluding section, a comparison is made between our results and on the theory of and pseudomonotone operators. There is substantial overlap in classes of to which the results and those obtained by The latter generally allows much greater in the nonlinearity (without priori estimate being available) whereas our results allow for a certain amount of ‘nonmonotonicity’ in the nonlinear terms. Furthermore, here we obtain a constructive algorithm (a variation of Newton’s method) for the solution, and this is a large part of the motivation for this work. In fact, the second author has recently utilized the second order results in [5] to obtain numerical approximations by the finite element method in [2]. We anticipate that the present work can be similarly utilized.

TL;DR: The long term follow-up clearly indicates an overall positive trend in support of the program, and further investigations to isolate and study the effects of camping, family therapy, and the schools are being planned.
Abstract: Describes an early stage intervention program for delinquent youths, a short term (6-month) and long term (2.7-year) follow-up evaluation. The program consists of three integral parts: (1) working with children through camping; (2) family therapy; and (3) working with the child's school. Youths (247) (X age = 11.4) participated over a 3-year period in short-term camping expeditions. Primary therapy is accomplished through cooperation for survival, meals, planning and utilization of peak experiences. The child's family was involved in learning coping skills, problem solving, etc. Relevant information and strategies were shared with the schools to aid the child further. The short term follow-up revealed significance on 15 of 17 criterion items. The long term follow-up clearly indicates an overall positive trend in support of the program. Selection and evaluation instruments, criteria, and the 16PF are discussed. Further investigations to isolate and study the effects of camping, family therapy, and the schools are being planned. TL;DR: The nature of behavior patterns of families, especially siblings of children with cystic fibrosis, are investigated, revealing considerable changes in family activities which represented interruption in the universal self-care requisite for solitude and social interaction.
Abstract: The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate the nature of behavior patterns of families, especially siblings of children with cystic fibrosis. Special attention was given to changes in behaviors of the siblings following the diagnosis of CF. Orem's self-care theory was used as the framework to describe the data and potential methods of assistance. Twenty-five siblings from fourteen different families consented to be interviewed. The mean age was 9.78 years. The data revealed considerable changes in family activities which represented interruption in the universal self-care requisite for solitude and social interaction. Family vacations involving travel were reduced because of anxieties relating to possible crises and adequacy of medical assistance while traveling. The findings revealed a serious lack of nursing involvement with these families. Most of the care was given by physicians and social workers who saw the families only in the clinic setting. The applications of five methods of assistance are described as suggestions for nursing involvement.

TL;DR: Describing of elements of the lesbian life style that appear to be consistent over time and to examine the results of using widely different data collection techniques attempting to differentiate such behaviors are examined.
Abstract: It is the intention of this article both to be descriptive of elements of the lesbian life style that appear to be consistent over time and to examine the results of using widely different data collection techniques attempting to differentiate such behaviors. In addition, the study from which the data are derived examined areas of change and social movement among selected areas of personal commitment or interaction. Research in the area of covert behavior is extremely difficult. Certain types of covert behavior preclude traditional survey and sampling procedures, making parameter estimates for the general population, as well as precluding the use of inferential statistics for data analysis. The masking of the deviant self is perhaps most pronounced where the covert activity in question is illegal (Klockars, 1974). Given this, a comparison of the impact of different research techniques on the quality of data generated in the study of deviant behavior would appear to be important. The data were collected from three separate groups involving three data collection times spread over a 10-year period, involving three geographic locations, and involving two different data collection techniques. A total of 394 lesbians were interviewed or responded to a questionnaire distributed with the cooperation of a large, well-known homophile organization. An analysis was made, and both significant and nonsignificant differences in sample types are discussed. It should be noted that these data represent a small segment of the data generated by the study. The parts of them presented were chosen because they address pertinent theoretical and methodological questions in the area of researching covert behavior.

TL;DR: Fourier grain shape analysis of quartz grains in sediment has been applied to a wide variety of sedimentological problems as mentioned in this paper and has been shown to have no significant effect on the shape of quartz particles.
Abstract: Fourier grain shape analysis of quartz grains in sediment has been applied to a wide variety of sedimentological problems. Mineralogically pure samples of quartz are required to eliminate the effects of shape variation due to non-quartz minerals. Hydrofluoric acid treatments of samples, which enables the identification feldspar contaminant grains, has been shown to have no significant effect on the shape of quartz particles, as measured by the first twenty terms of a closed-form Fourier Series.

TL;DR: In this paper, the reliability and construct validity of an instrument designed to measure teacher knowledge of reading are examined, and significant differences among teachers grouped by number of years of teaching experience, degree level, number of reading courses, and grade level taught.
Abstract: The reliability and construct validity of an instrument designed to measure teacher knowledge of reading are examined. The instrument was administered to a sample of 304 elementary school teachers. Results revealed significant differences among teachers grouped by number of years of teaching experience, degree level, number of reading courses, and grade level taught. All differences were interpreted as supporting the construct validity of the instrument. Internal consistency reliability was estimated at .91.

TL;DR: A system for quantitatively measuring industrially relevant residual motor abilities and a method of efficiently identifying task modification requirements are described, which are needed for effective placement and efficient modification of workplaces.
Abstract: Persons with severe physical disabilities are becoming part of the industrial workforce in the United States as mandated by Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Methods of effective placement and efficient modification of workplaces must be developed if this moral and legal mandate is to be met. This paper describes a system for quantitatively measuring industrially relevant residual motor abilities and a method of efficiently identifying task modification requirements. Language: en

TL;DR: In this article, a symmetrical geometry is used to compare balanced and unbalanced flows in the branches of arterial bifurcations, and kinematic results are presented and compared in terms of stream function and vorticity contour plots.
Abstract: Since arterial bifurcations are susceptible to disease, it is important to understand the hemodynamics associated with this common cardiovascular non-uniformity. This paper seeks to extend our understanding of bifurcation flows by using a symmetrical geometry and comparing balanced and unbalanced flows in the branches. Finite difference methods are employed in the vorticity transport-stream function formulation and are aided by a coordinate transform. The basic characteristics of unsteady flow are amply portrayed using the simple oscillatory forcing function. The particular flow division ratios used in this study were QR = 1/2 and 2/3; these values were held constant throughout the period of oscillation. The Karman number and Stokes number of the trunk flow, the basic flow similarity parameters, were taken as 1000 and 10π, respectively. Kinematic results are presented and compared in terms of stream function and vorticity contour plots. Kinetic results are summarized in the form of shear distributions over the regions of interest both in time and space.

TL;DR: Despite high levels of drug use, the most frequent reason for group participation was friendship, and diverse social activities occurred in the group, and enduring, positive relationships characterized each group.
Abstract: Three ongoing marijuana-using groups were studied in their natural environments. Group characteristics and the relationship of each member to individuals within the group were assessed, in addition to the members' primary social roles outside the group. The relationship of sociometric data to user characteristics was determined. The social and drug histories of the three groups were highly similar. Despite high levels of drug use, the most frequent reason for group participation was friendship, and diverse social activities occurred in the group. Social resources outside the group were minimal, whereas enduring, positive relationships characterized each group. Popularity was related to frequency of group participation, but not to extent of drug use. The function of marijuana-using groups in fulfilling interpersonal needs is discussed.
