TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the state-of-the-art development of competitiveness research and provide a basic understanding on competitiveness at various levels, such as nation, industry and the firm.
Abstract: Competitiveness has now become a buzzword like globalization. It has received attention from researchers, governments and business organizations because of its close association with the success of an entity. In the past decades, many works on competitiveness with different perspectives have been published. But competitiveness is yet an elusive concept, the relevance of which is changing with time. There is a need for a comprehensive review of extant literature on the subject. This review article presents the state-of-the-art development of competitiveness research. To begin with, the article lays the foundation for basic understanding on competitiveness at various levels, such as nation, industry and the firm. After elaborating on the theories of competitiveness that have evolved over the years, it gives insight on the measurement models. The plethora of studies that signify different approaches to measure competitiveness are discussed at length. The future direction of competitiveness research is also s...

TL;DR: This article is one of the first attempts to classify healthcare services according to the service process matrix, and shows that different healthcare services pose unique challenges to lean implementation due to their inherent characteristics of service delivery.
Abstract: Over the last decade, many healthcare organizations have adopted lean thinking to reduce wastages and to improve flow efficiency in the patient flow processes. But there is limited research done on understanding the sequence to be followed by healthcare organizations to implement lean in their different departments, and on the applicability of various lean tools in different healthcare settings. This article aims to bridge this gap, map the current state of lean in healthcare and identify future research directions. Key concepts of lean thinking are introduced, and the current body of knowledge between 2002 and 2014 is explored to answer key research questions on the application of lean in different healthcare settings. Further, this article is one of the first attempts to classify healthcare services according to the service process matrix. Results show that different healthcare services pose unique challenges to lean implementation due to their inherent characteristics of service delivery. Research oppo...

TL;DR: In this paper, a panel data analysis technique generalized least square (GLS) method was used for analysis to determine whether there is any impact of these earnings manipulation in future financial performance or not.
Abstract: Managers manipulate firm’s earnings through real activities to show good performance in the current period. This article determines whether there is any impact of these earnings manipulation in future financial performance or not. A panel data analysis technique generalized least square (GLS) method was used for analysis. The sample includes 119 firms listed in Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) for the years 2004–2011. The article provides evidence that firms engaged in real earnings management (REM) activities through sales manipulation to report higher earnings have worse financial performance in future. It reveals that earnings manipulation seems helpful and appealing in current situation but creates problems in future.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors empirically examined the relationship between financial distress and earnings management with reference to selected Indian firms and found that less distressed firms are engaged in higher earnings management.
Abstract: This article makes an attempt to empirically examine the relationship between financial distress and earnings management with reference to selected Indian firms. Our sample consists of 150 financially distressed firms during the post-recession period from 2009 to 2014. The present study uses discretionary accruals (DA) as a proxy for earnings management. Multiple regression analysis has been used for this purpose. The study uses cross-sectional modified Jones model to estimate DA, a proxy for earnings management. Altman’s Z-score (Z-score) and distance-to-default (DD) have been used as two alternative measures for financial distress. The study finds that less distressed firms are engaged in higher earnings management. Cash flow coverage (CFC) is found to have a significant negative relationship with earnings management implying that firms with higher CFC have lesser incentive to manage their earnings through DA. The findings are consistent with several prior studies. The findings of the study have importa...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an overview of green IT/IS applications and discuss noteworthy research questions that may guide forthcoming empirical investigations to identify determinants or prospective outcomes of Green IT and IT for green.
Abstract: ‘Greening’ of business has gained attention across industries and academia. Green information technology (IT) is a critical domain of green information systems (IS) as utilization of environmentally sustainable information and communication technologies (ICTs) facilitates informed decision-making. Green IT and IT for green are at the growth stage among developed countries and at the infancy stage among developing countries. The absence of an established theoretical framework that anchors present and future studies necessitates an examination of peer-reviewed journals and proceedings that are published online. With reference to 10 organizational theories, this study presents an overview of Green IT/IS applications and discusses noteworthy research questions that may guide forthcoming empirical investigations to identify determinants or prospective outcomes of Green IT/IS. Frameworks of a firm’s readiness to go green via eco-sustainable IT practices are discussed from diverse theoretical viewpoints to ground implications, in pertinence to heterogeneous approaches towards the adoption of Green IT/IS. The review also presents practical business opportunities to IT managers of socioeconomic- oriented organizations. As journals and conference papers are the foremost source of reference, emerging developments of this study may also appear in books and white papers. This article establishes linkages between organizational theories and Green IT/IS implementations and presents suggestions on further extensions for those who wish to investigate this field.

TL;DR: An extended technology acceptance model–technical–organization– environment (TAM–TOE) framework is proposed and its measures for cloud-computing adoption in organizations are developed and managers can use measures identified to analyze their suitability for implementing cloud computing in their organizations.
Abstract: This article aims to propose an extended technology acceptance model–technical–organization– environment (TAM–TOE) framework and to develop its measures for cloud-computing adoption in organizations. Information technology adoption literature based on the TAM model and the TOE framework was reviewed to identify a set of variables relevant to cloud computing adoption. A conceptual framework was developed to integrate the TAM model and the TOE framework. Further, cloud-specific variables (security and third-party control) were also incorporated in the framework. This extended TAM–TOE framework was qualitatively analyzed using an interview method which resulted in 12 of the variables relevant to cloud-computing adoption. Further, a questionnaire was designed, pre-tested and surveyed to develop reliable measures of cloud-computing adoption. It resulted in conceptualizing an extended TAM–TOE framework for cloud-computing adoption and in developing its reliable measures. This study has a smaller sample size and...

TL;DR: In this paper, the Big Five personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, neuroticism, agreeableness and openness to experience were examined for e-filing continuance usage intention.
Abstract: The submission of tax return forms via e-filing has shown a tremendous increase among taxpayers in Malaysia since its launch in 2006, particularly for individual taxpayers. Around 33 per cent of the total registered individual taxpayers in Malaysia have filed their income taxes via e-filing in 2010. E-filing services serve measurable benefits to both taxpayers and the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM) in terms of convenience, time saving, accuracy, security, cost effectiveness, reduced processing time and increase in productivity and efficiency. Unfortunately, as a result of digital divide, all the taxpayers may not be able to realize these benefits. This study examines the effect of individual demographic characteristics of age, gender, income, education and ethnicity, and the Big Five personality traits of extraversion, conscientiousness, neuroticism, agreeableness and openness to experience, on the e-filing continuance usage intention. Data were collected from five urban states in Malaysia, namel...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the factors that influence the profitability of Indian banking sector in the post-reform period using the data from 1995 to 2012, and found that operating profits, wage bills, non-performing assets and net interest margin affect the profitability.
Abstract: The present article explores the factors that influence the profitability of Indian banking sector in the post-reform period using the data from 1995 to 2012. The results indicate that operating profits, wage bills, non-performing assets and net interest margin affect the profitability of Indian banks, while the priority sector lending does not have any impact on bank profitability in India. Further, the net interest margin is found to be significantly reducing profitability. Hence, it is suggested that banking sector in India should focus on reducing its operational expenses.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the integration of the developed market of the US and emerging Asian stock markets before and after recent global financial crisis from the international portfolio diversification perspective, and applied the concept of cointegration and uses Morgan Stanley Composite Index (MSCI) data for analysis, and the period of investigation is January 1992 to April 2014.
Abstract: The financial integration of global markets has been an important topic of research and the behaviour of emerging markets is receiving even greater interest after the recent developments in financial markets across the world. The purpose of this article is to investigate the integration of the developed market of the US and emerging Asian stock markets before and after recent global financial crisis from the international portfolio diversification perspective. The study applies the concept of cointegration and uses Morgan Stanley Composite Index (MSCI) data for analysis, and the period of investigation is January 1992 to April 2014. The global indices which are sampled in the study are large and mid cap MSCI of USA, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and India. The findings of this study are very interesting and suggest the presence of strong long-term integration but the absence of short-term integration of Indian stock markets with global markets.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify the main risk factors related to IT outsourcing partnerships from the perspective of Bulgarian vendors on the basis of empirical study, based on theoretical grounds provided by the specialized literature and utilizes selected results from a survey of outsourcing relations between Bulgarian vendor organizations and their clients.
Abstract: In recent years, information technology (IT) outsourcing is a widespread practice in the global business today. Business organizations decide to transfer such kind of services to other firms (vendors) in search of cost-related and other competitive advantages. Identification and handling of risks appears to be crucial for IT outsourcing success. The objective of this article is to identify the main risk factors related to IT outsourcing partnerships from the perspective of Bulgarian vendors on the basis of empirical study. The analysis is based on theoretical grounds provided by the specialized literature and utilizes selected results from a survey of outsourcing relations between Bulgarian vendor organizations and their clients (outsourcers). The study is focused on the risk factors that could potentially hinder the formation and development of strategic outsourcing partnerships. Some of these risk factors act as threats for outsourcing success and their potential effects need to be considered within the...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored gender differences in the experiences of human resource (HR) management (HRM) policies in the workplace and found that women's expectations at work were met to a larger extent than men's.
Abstract: The existence of gender inequality at the workplace is a pervasive problem in many countries around the world. Although the situation may have improved in recent years, studies still point to the fact that men receive better rewards at work in terms of income, status, promotion and development opportunities among others. There may be a considerable amount of research on this topic in developed countries; however, there have been very few in the Middle East region. This research study aims to explore gender differences in the experiences of human resource (HR) management (HRM) policies in the workplace. Based on 100 participants in the country of Lebanon, the results of the study were somehow surprising. The findings show that women’s expectations at work were met to a larger extent than men’s. There was a significant difference in at least two HR practices including ‘recognition at work’ and ‘supporting managers/supervisors’. Results and discussions are presented.
