Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of hardened steel spheres against ductile mild steel targets has been studied both theoretically and experimentally, and it is shown that a relatively simple computer model based on the assumptions that the sphere is rigid and the target an ideal rigid-plastic solid provides a surprisingly successful explanation of the observed variation of crater volume and projectile energy loss with impact angle and velocity.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, lower bound estimates of the buckling loads for axially loaded unstiffened cylinders are simplified by means of a Donnell-type approximation to provide compact, explicit, analytical expressions which could prove particularly suited to design.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the Reissner method and the total potential energy approach were applied to a pre-twisted cantilever blade executing coupled bending-bending vibrations, and the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the first four coupled modes were determined.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the elastic springback undergone by a rectangular plate after submitting it to biaxial elastic-plastic pure bending is determined, first based on non-proportional loading using the Tresca criterion and then on proportional loading for both the Mises and tresca criteria.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the thermal buckling of a railroad track in the lateral plane is analyzed with the track modelled as an elastic beam resting on an elastic-plastic foundation representing the ballast.

TL;DR: In this paper, complete expressions for the strains, including second order terms, occurring in thin walled bars of open cross-section are derived and verified by incorporating them in a general instability analysis based on energy considerations.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a curve and two tables are provided to delineate the range of applicability of the results provided in Ref. [1] and show the procedure for the application of their results.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a numerical method of solution is presented for the plastic deformation of a circular metal diaphragm, applied to the bulging of soft commercial purity aluminium sheet and the results correlated with experiment.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a lower bound to the limit pressure of a cylindrical shell with a rectangular slot part through the thickness at mid-length is computed using a linear optimization technique, where the sides of the slot are axial and circumferential.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the modes of cyclic elasto-plastic deformation of a two-bar structure with unequal areas and lengths under the simultaneous action of sustained mechanical load and cyclic thermal history are investigated analytically using three types of elastoneplastic material models: perfectly plastic, linear kinematic hardening and linear isotropic hardening.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the nonaxisymmetric bifurcation and post-bifurcation behaviors of circular tubes subjected to internal pressure in terms of the finite element method.

Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this article, an approximate steady, free rolling contact solution was obtained for two cylinders; each has an elastic layer bonded to a hard core, and rolling with the cylinders, is a thin sheet with extensional stiffness and no net traction.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a three-dimensional kinematic model by limit analysis for plastic deformation, denoted as SERR (Spatial Elementary Rigid Regions), is presented.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the deformation behavior of mild steel rings and short tubes of various diameters, thicknesses and lengths loaded centrally by opposed conically-headed cylindrical punches is examined.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a thin flexible elastic circular ring is hung at one point and the ring deforms due to its own weight, and the heavy elastica equations are solved by perturbation for small B, by a quasi-Newton method for intermediate B and by a homotopy method for large B. The approximate results show good agreement with numerical integration for B < 20.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the theoretical implications of varying the mass and stiffness properties in a search for desirable stress states in thick rim flywheels are investigated, in some cases, the variation of mass and stiff properties to achieve desirable stress state facilitates consideration of thick rims with an inner radius to outer radius of 0.6 or lower.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Tension and compression specimens of anisotropic (oriented) polycarbonate were subjected to hydrostatic pressures up to 552 MPa (80 ksi) and the resulting yield behavior was compared with a yield criterion for use with pressure dependent solids as mentioned in this paper.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the overlap formed at the back and front end in slab ingot rolling and concluded that large roll diameters should be used in order to minimize the crop loss.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the elastic strain in the wires of the outer braid of a two-braid high pressure hydraulic hose was measured with a Solex pneumatic extensometer.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the optical method of reflected caustics, which has been applied to the evaluation of stress intensity factors in cracked plates deformed under mode I and II, is extended in this paper to evaluate the same factor in cracked plate subjected to mode III deformation.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a simplified analysis of the cross-roll straightening processes is made and roll arrangements for higher throughput, speed and standard of straightness are suggested, but the analysis is limited to a single roll.
