Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that during the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB) period, as preserved on the Moon, the terrestrial upper mantle-crust system was dominated by interactions between internal mantle processes and extraterrestrial impacts, and that following this period, the impact flux decreased by two orders of magnitude, from 4-9×10 −13 km −2 year −1 to 3.8-6.3×10−15 km −1 (for asteroids Dc >=18 km).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The origin of eclogite remains an enigma, despite of great progress in our knowledge of this rock as discussed by the authors, and it has been a matter of considerable interest during the last two decades, especially since the discovery of ultra-high-pressure coesite-bearing rocks in the crust has drastically changed geologists' ideas concerning the limits of ECLogite-facies crustal metamorphism.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Casterano et al. as mentioned in this paper presented a consistent model, which explains the mechanisms of unrest phenomena at Campi Flegrei (Italy), both at short-term (years) and at secular scales.

64 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, gravity measurements at close spacing (1-2 km) along three profiles (∼550 km each), starting from west coast of India upto the eastern margin of the Deccan Volcanic Province (DVP), are carried out to understand the subsurface density structures and tectonics of the region.

58 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the Pb/Pb single zircon dating technique to determine the ages of granitoid intrusives and orthogneisses from the mid-German crystalline rise (MGCR).

53 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, three different approaches are taken: (1) collision where one ‘continental plate’ is pushed against another across a zone of weakness; (2) gravitational instability of a lithospheric mantle root leading to delamination, slab break-off and crustal root reduction; (3) melting in the lower part of a crustal orogenic root.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A review of two centuries of tectonic interpretations of the Alps can be found in this paper, from the early fixistic tenets emphasizing vertical movements to the impact of the new global tectonics, through the epos of the nappe theory.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Tron et al. as mentioned in this paper performed a series of centrifuge analogue experiments to model the mechanics of continental oblique extension in the presence of underplated magma at the base of the continental crust.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Kaila et al. as mentioned in this paper re-examine the crustal structure of the Western Dharwar Craton (WDC) by reprocessing the data of three major shot points.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The NNE-trending Hunan-Jiangxi strike-slip fault system (HJSFS) as discussed by the authors comprises three primary faults (the Anhua-Chengbu fault, the Chalin-Chenxian fault, and the Ganjiang fault) with associated NE- and NW-tending secondary faults.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, three-layer feed-forward neural network models were constructed to analyse earthquake occurrences to predict the origin times of large (M⩾6.0) earthquakes.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discussed the rheology of the mantle based on theoretical and experimental rate equations for steady state creep and compared with results from geophysical models and showed that the upper mantle is likely to show non-Newtonian rheological properties for average grain sizes larger than 0.1 mm as an order of magnitude.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The first roughly scaled experiments were performed by Sir James Hall about two centuries ago, in the intellectual atmosphere generated by the appearance of Hutton's Theory of the Earth (Hutton, J., 1795) as discussed by the authors.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the present day kinematics of the major tectonic elements in Bulgaria, part of the northern extent of the Aegean extensional system, were determined based on the estimates of the velocities of 17 stations surveyed at least twice.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a geostructural study on active faults in central Italy, where seismogenic fault zones occur as part of a Quaternary network dissecting and/or inverting earlier tectonic features of the central Apennines fold and thrust belt, is presented.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors illustrate the second stage of a two-stage magmatic progression which affected the back-arc domain of the southern Tyrrhenian sea as well as its corresponding foreland of eastern Sicily and Strait of Sicily.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reproduce the highly heterogeneous strain field indicated by neotectonic and seismological data in the central-eastern Mediterranean region by finite element modeling, at a first approximation, of a 2D elastic thin plate.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A three-dimensional image of the Campi Flegrei caldera between 0 and 3 km of depth has been inferred by the inversion of P rise time and pulse width data of 87 local earthquakes recorded during the last bradiseismic crisis by a local array deployed in the area by the University of Wisconsin this article.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the average measured increase in the length of the day is 1.8 ms per century, from which it was concluded that besides the tidal contribution there is another long-term component acting to decrease the Earth's rate of spin, which is consistent with recent measurements made by artificial satellites.
