TL;DR: In this paper, it has been argued that a paradigmatic or prototypical case of human psychological well-being would largely manifest most or all of the aforementioned PERMA factors, including positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment.
Abstract: In “Flourish,” Martin Seligman maintained that the elements of well-being consist of “PERMA: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment.” Although the question of what constitutes human flourishing or psychological well-being has remained a topic of continued debate among scholars, it has recently been argued in the literature that a paradigmatic or prototypical case of human psychological well-being would largely manifest most or all of the aforementioned PERMA factors. Further, in “A Neuroscientific Perspective on Music Therapy,” Stefan Koelsch also suggested that “Music therapy can have effects that improve the psychological and physiological health of individuals,” so it seems plausible that engaging in practices of music can positively contribute to one living a more optimally flourishing life with greater psychological well-being. However, recent studies on music practice and participation have not yet been reviewed and integrated under the PERMA framework from positive...

TL;DR: In this article, a case study based on qualitative interviews with the Danish String Quartet (DSQ) is presented, where a total of 12 hours of interviews was recorded, drawing on ethnography-related methodologies during tours with the DSQ in Denmark and England in 2012 and 2013.
Abstract: In this article we explore the role of pre-reflective, embodied, and interactive intentionality in joint musical performance. Putting together insights from phenomenology and current theories in cognitive science, we present a case study based on qualitative interviews with the Danish String Quartet (DSQ). A total of 12 hours of interviews was recorded, drawing on ethnography-related methodologies during tours with the DSQ in Denmark and England in 2012 and 2013, focusing mainly on their experience of perception, intentionality, absorption, selfhood and intersubjectivity. The analysis emerging from our data suggests that expert musicians’ experience of collective music-making is rooted in the dynamical patterns of perception and action that co-constitute the sonic environment(s) in which they are embedded, and that the role of attention and other reflective processes should therefore be reconsidered. In putting forward our view on ensemble cohesion, we challenge Keller’s and Seddon and Biasutti’s influent...

TL;DR: This study tested whether attention to visual cues during piano–piano and piano–violin duet performance increases in such situations, and found that visual cues were used effectively following long pauses in the music, even in the absence of primo audio.
Abstract: Nonverbal auditory and visual communication helps ensemble musicians predict each other’s intentions and coordinate their actions. When structural characteristics of the music make predicting co-performers’ intentions difficult (e.g., following long pauses or during ritardandi), reliance on incoming auditory and visual signals may change. This study tested whether attention to visual cues during piano–piano and piano–violin duet performance increases in such situations. Pianists performed the secondo part to three duets, synchronizing with recordings of violinists or pianists playing the primo parts. Secondos’ access to incoming audio and visual signals and to their own auditory feedback was manipulated. Synchronization was most successful when primo audio was available, deteriorating when primo audio was removed and only cues from primo visual signals were available. Visual cues were used effectively following long pauses in the music, however, even in the absence of primo audio. Synchronization was unaffected by the removal of secondos’ own auditory feedback. Differences were observed in how successfully piano–piano and piano–violin duos synchronized, but these effects of instrument pairing were not consistent across pieces. Pianists’ success at synchronizing with violinists and other pianists is likely moderated by piece characteristics and individual differences in the clarity of cueing gestures used.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors test whether different facets of mindfulness (attention, present focus, awareness, and acceptance) moderated a mediation process in which digital piracy in friends promotes a lenient legal-ethical position that fosters music piracy intentions in emerging adults.
Abstract: Music piracy is a prevalent, costly, and illegal global phenomenon. The objective of this study was to test whether different facets of mindfulness (attention, present focus, awareness, and acceptance) moderated a mediation process in which digital piracy in friends promotes a lenient legal-ethical position that fosters music piracy intentions in emerging adults. We controlled for personality traits (Big Five), emotion regulation (reappraisal and suppression), time spent listening to music, various Internet-related behaviors (non-academic Internet use, downloading, social networking, smartphone use), and sociodemographics (gender, age, and level of education). Participants were 156 emerging adults (aged between 18 and 25 years) who studied at a Canadian university. Moderated mediation analyses (bootstrapping 50,000 random resamples) suggested that social influence from digital piracy in friends might be a risk factor that has: (i) a direct effect on music piracy intentions; (ii) an indirect effect on musi...

TL;DR: The HarmoRubette component in the RUBATO music software environment is decomposed, redesigned and extended into a Harmonic Analysis Network, which is described in detail and discusses two sample analyses with the network.
Abstract: Harmonic analysis of symbolic music provides useful insights into music composition and performance. Automation of harmonic analysis could provide further help in making the analysis process explicit, precise, and user-configurable. The HarmoRubette component in the RUBATO music software environment was developed for such purposes. We decomposed, redesigned and extended HarmoRubette into a Harmonic Analysis Network. We describe our tonality/Harmonic Analysis Network in detail and discuss two sample analyses with the network.

TL;DR: This article describes the use of image-processing methods to accurately convert the visual data in Seashore’s performance scores into data points and presents a proof-of-concept study of the vocal performance scores in Harold Seashores’ “An Objective Analysis of Artistic Singing” (1936).
Abstract: In the first half of the 20th century, Carl Seashore and colleagues undertook extensive work in performance analysis of a variety of instruments. Their data were embodied in so-called performance scores, which still exist as illustrations of laborious work undertaken by the early pioneers of music performance research and, in their original form, offer today’s researchers the opportunity to only visually examine the experimental data. This article describes the use of image-processing methods to accurately convert the visual data in Seashore’s performance scores into data points. This use of technology offers researchers the opportunity to directly engage with the data collected in Seashore’s laboratory, either for the purposes of validation or performing analyses for which the researchers in Seashore’s time did not have the computational facilities or algorithms to perform. This paper also presents a proof-of-concept study of the vocal performance scores in Harold Seashore’s “An Objective Analysis of Art...

TL;DR: The authors examined the role of native language of the singer in this task by comparing the sung productions of the song by native English versus native Chinese students and found that those who heard the song in their native language made fewer melodic contour errors.
Abstract: The AIRS Test Battery of Singing Skills (ATBSS) is a protocol for acquiring data about a wide range of singing abilities, one of which is the ability to learn an unfamiliar song. This test component presents a song with English lyrics. We examined the role of native language of the singer in this task by comparing the sung productions of the song by native English versus native Chinese students. Following a pilot study that suggested the impact of native language, in the main experiment, 12 participants (6 from each language group) heard the test song with lyrics in their native language (English/Mandarin Chinese), and 12 more heard the lyrics in the foreign language. The instructions were to sing “la” and not the lyrics. For both native-language groups, those who heard the song in their native language made fewer melodic contour errors. When later asked to sing the song with lyrics, the benefit of native language was also evident for both contour and lyrics. These effects of degree of matching of one’s n...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated how the auditory pitch, the frequency range, the complexity, as well as the structure of the sound affected the synaesthetic visual attributes of chroma, colour brightness, colour plurality and density.
Abstract: Although research on synaesthesia has blossomed in the last decades, few things are known about inherited sound-colour synaesthesia and processes underlying synaesthetic perception. In this study we investigated how the auditory pitch, the frequency range, the complexity, as well as the structure of the sound affected the synaesthetic visual attributes of chroma, colour brightness, colour plurality and density. A distinct mapping was observed between sound features and visual characteristics, which suggests that visual stimulation requires sensory auditory processing. We propose that congenital synaesthetic perception involves two stages of processing: initially the sensory auditory information is processed by the primary auditory cortex, and then it is distributed to the secondary and extrastriate visual brain areas, generating visual stimulation. This process does not necessarily involve the participation of brain areas responsible for associative thinking.
