A bactericidal effect for human lactoferrin
TLDR
Streptococcus mutans and Vibrio cholerae, but not Escherichia coli, were killed by incubation with purified human apolact oferrin, contingent upon the metal-chelating properties of the lactoferrin molecule.Abstract:
Streptococcus mutans and Vibrio cholerae, but not Escherichia coli, were killed by incubation with purified human apolactoferrin. Concentrations of lactoferrin below that necessary for total inhibition resulted in a marked reduction in viable colony-forming units. This bactericidal effect was contingent upon the metal-chelating properties of the lactoferrin molecule.read more

Defensins. Natural peptide antibiotics of human neutrophils.
Tomas Ganz,Michael E. Selsted,D Szklarek,Sylvia S. L. Harwig,Kathleen A. Daher,D F Bainton,Robert I. Lehrer +6 more
TL;DR: The defensin system may operate in conjunction with or independently from oxygen-dependent microbicidal processes to enable human neutrophils to inactivate and destroy potential pathogens.

TL;DR: Significant findings related to nomenclature and protein methodology are elucidation of several new genetic variants of the major milk proteins, establishment by sequencing techniques and sequence alignment of the bovine caseins and whey proteins as the reference point for the nomenClature of all homologous milk proteins.

Identification of the bactericidal domain of lactoferrin.
Wayne Robert Bellamy,Mitsunori Takase,Koji Yamauchi,Hiroyuki Wakabayashi,Kouzou Kawase,Mamoru Tomita +5 more
TL;DR: The studies suggest this domain is the structural region responsible for the bacterial properties of lactoferrin, having effectiveness against various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria at concentrations between 0.3 microM and 3.0 microM, depending on the target strain.

Human beta-defensin-1: an antimicrobial peptide of urogenital tissues.
TL;DR: Production of HBD-1 in the urogenital tract could contribute to local antimicrobial defense, and no intracellular storage sites were identified in renal or female reproductive tissues.

Killing of gram-negative bacteria by lactoferrin and lysozyme.
rd R T Ellison,T. J. Giehl +1 more
TL;DR: Dialysis chamber studies indicate that bacterial killing requires direct contact with lactoferrin, and work with purified LPS suggests that this relates to direct LPS-binding by the protein, suggesting that their interaction contributes to host defense.

Iron-binding Proteins in Milk and Resistance to Escherichia coli Infection in Infants
TL;DR: The bacteriostatic properties of milk were abolished if the iron-binding proteins were saturated with iron, and this effect was also abolished by saturating the lactoferrin with iron.

An iron-binding protein common to many external secretions
TL;DR: The iron-binding protein characteristic of milk, here called lactoferrin, has been demonstrated to occur in saliva, nasal secretions, tears, bronchial mucus, hepatic bile, pancreatic juice, seminal fluid, female cervical mucus and urines and it is suggested that it is of value in the defence of epithelial surfaces against infection.

TL;DR: It seems that iron-binding proteins in milk may play an important part in resistance to infantile enteritis caused by E. coli.

Iron-Binding Catechols and Virulence in Escherichia coli.
TL;DR: Time studies indicated that leukemic and nonleukemic viruses caused similar patterns in the alteration of PHA-induced DNA synthesis, whereas lactic dehydrogenase virus, adenovirus, and polyoma virus induced an increase in DNA synthesis.
