A systematic review of item response theory in language assessment: Implications for the dimensionality of language ability

TL;DR: This paper conducted a systematic review of the item response theory literature in language assessment to investigate the conceptualization and operationalization of the dimensionality of language ability, and found that exploratory factor analysis was the primary method of dimensionality analysis in papers that had applied unidimensional IRT models, whereas the comparison modeling approach was dominant in the multidimensional framework.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluating subscore uses across multiple levels: A case of reading and listening subscores for young EFL learners:

TL;DR: This article argued that reporting a subscore is not always justified, and that the subscore should provide reliable and distinct information to be worth repurchasing, and not just to report a score.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Reliability and Validity of Language Proficiency Assessments for English Language Learners

Xiaoyan Jing
TL;DR: In this article, the validity and reliability of these English language proficiency assessments for English language learners in early-exit TBE programs in elementary schools was investigated. But the validity of these assessments was not evaluated.

Making the Most of What We Have: A Practical Application of Multidimensional Item Response Theory in Test Scoring

TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchical Bayesian framework is proposed to simultaneously estimate different abilities with the use of a hierarchical bayesian framework, more precise estimates for each ability dimension are obtained.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reporting of Subscores Using Multidimensional Item Response Theory

TL;DR: In this article, a multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) model is fitted using a stabilized Newton-Raphson algorithm, and a new statistical approach is proposed to assess when subscores using the MIRT model have any added value over the total score or the subscores based on classical test theory.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Longitudinal Study of Reading Development of Canadian Children from Diverse Linguistic Backgrounds

TL;DR: This article examined the development of reading and reading-related skills for native and nonnative speakers of English through the first and second grades and found that children from both language groups used similar strategies in reading unfamiliar words.
Journal ArticleDOI

An NCME Instructional Module on Subscores

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of methods that can be used to examine if subscores have adequate psychometric quality is provided, using results from operational and simulated data, and it is also demonstrated that several operationally reported subscores do not have adequate quality.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparing Multidimensional and Unidimensional Proficiency Classifications: Multidimensional IRT as a Diagnostic Aid

TL;DR: This article examined the effect of scoring items thought to be multidimensional using a unidimensional model and demonstrated the use of multi-dimensional item response theory (MIRT) as a diagnostic tool.
