A contour-texture approach to picture coding

TLDR
A new image coding technique, based on a simplified description of a region-composed image, which uses an adaptive psychovisually oriented segmentation process to achieve promising results in data compression.
Abstract
A new image coding technique, based on a simplified description of a region-composed image is presented. The regions are extracted from the original image by an adaptive psychovisually oriented segmentation process. The picture elements (pels) inside the regions represent the texture information of the image whereas the region boundaries points represent the contour information. The data-adaptive character of this method as well as the use of some psychovisual characteristics of the human visual system lead to promising results in data compression.

Second-generation image-coding techniques

TL;DR: A new class of coding methods capable of achieving compression ratios as high as 70:1 is called second generation, which can be formed in this class: methods using local operators and combining their output in a suitable way and methods using contour-texture descriptions.

Hierarchical morphological segmentation for image sequence coding

TL;DR: A hierarchical morphological segmentation algorithm for image sequence coding that directly segments 3-D regions and concentrates on the coding residue, all the information about the 3- D regions that have not been properly segmented and therefore coded.

Morphological multiscale segmentation for image coding

TL;DR: A hierarchical segmentation algorithm for image coding based on mathematical morphology, which takes into account the most global information of the image and produces a coarse (with a reduced number of regions) segmentation.

Visual pattern image coding

TL;DR: A novel framework for digital image compression called visual pattern image coding, or VPIC, is presented; set of visual-patterns is defined independent of the images to be coded, and there is no training phase required.

Medical image compression with lossless regions of interest

TL;DR: Several new algorithms for lossless region-of-interest (ROI) compression are presented and compared, based on lossless coding with the S-transform, and two arebased on lossy wavelet zerotree coding together with either pixel-domain or transform-domain coding of the regional residual.

Efficient coding of high resolution typographic characters

TL;DR: In modern phototypesetting equipments, it is necessary to digitize the typefonts with a very high resolution grid and expressing the contour in terms of line and circle segments seems to be an appropriate method to achieve this goal.
