A Correlation of Leakage Vortex Cavitation in Axial-Flow Pumps

TLDR
In this article, a correlation of variables which predict the vortex minimum pressure has been formulated, and measurements of the important variables for this correlation have been made on a high Reynolds number (3×10 6 ) axial-flow test rig.
Abstract
Tip clearance flow in turbomachinery can lead to losses in efficiency and stall margin. In liquid handling turbomachinery, the vortical flow field, formed from the interaction of the leakage flow with the through-flow, is subject to cavitation. Furthermore, this flow field is complex and not well understood. A correlation of variables which predict the vortex minimum pressure has been formulated. Measurements of the important variables for this correlation have been made on a high Reynolds number (3×10 6 ) axial-flow test rig. The correlation has been applied to the measured data and other data sets from the literature with good agreement. An optimum tip clearance has been theoretically identified as experiments have shown

Cavitation in vortical flows

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that vortex core instabilities in microvortices are important factors in the erosion mechanisms associated with sheet/cloud cavitation. But, only limited attention paid to developed vortex cavitation was paid to the inception process.

A review of cavitation in hydraulic machinery

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarized the recent progress for the cavitation study in the hydraulic machinery including turbo-pumps, hydro turbines, etc., and identified the 1-D analysis method, which is identified to be very useful for engineering applications regarding the cavitating flows in inducers, turbine draft tubes, etc.

Mind the gap: a new insight into the tip leakage vortex using stereo-PIV

TL;DR: In this article, a NACA0009 hydrofoil is used as a generic blade in a water tunnel while the clearance between the blade tip and the wall is varied, and 3D velocity fields are measured using Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) in three planes located downstream of the turbine for different values of the upstream velocity, the incidence angle and a large number of tip clearances.

Measurements of the tip leakage vortex structures and turbulence in the meridional plane of an axial water-jet pump

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the flow structures in the tip region of a water-jet pump rotor, including the tip-clearance flow and the rollup process of a tip leakage vortex (TLV).

Effects of tip-gap size on the tip-leakage flow in a turbomachinery cascade

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of tip-gap size on the tip-leakage vortical structures and velocity and pressure fields were investigated using large-eddy simulation, with the objective of providing guidelines for controlling tip-Leakage cavitation and viscous losses associated with the tip leakage flow.
