TLDR
In this paper, the authors describe the EM algorithm for finding the parameters of a mixture of Gaussian densities and a hidden Markov model (HMM) for both discrete and Gaussian mixture observation models.
Abstract
We describe the maximum-likelihood parameter estimation problem and how the ExpectationMaximization (EM) algorithm can be used for its solution. We first describe the abstract form of the EM algorithm as it is often given in the literature. We then develop the EM parameter estimation procedure for two applications: 1) finding the parameters of a mixture of Gaussian densities, and 2) finding the parameters of a hidden Markov model (HMM) (i.e., the Baum-Welch algorithm) for both discrete and Gaussian mixture observation models. We derive the update equations in fairly explicit detail but we do not prove any convergence properties. We try to emphasize intuition rather than mathematical rigor.

A collaborative telerobotics network framework with hand gesture interface and conflict prevention

TL;DR: A distributed conflict and error detection–prediction network is designed and applied to a case study of collaborative control for a robotic nuclear decommissioning task and the hypothesis is tested that collaborative control is more effective and less susceptible to conflicts/errors than the standard single-operator control.

PTZ camera network calibration from moving people in sports broadcasts

TL;DR: This work presents a method which combines image trajectory matching with the self-calibration of rotating and zooming cameras, effectively reducing the remaining degrees of freedom in the matching stage to a 2D similarity transformation.

Pilot-Assisted and Blind Joint Data Detection and Channel Estimation in Partial-Time Jamming

TL;DR: A blind estimation algorithm is presented to avoid the reduction in overall code rate from the use of pilot symbols and the overall performance of the EM algorithm is very sensitive to the initial estimates, so a new initial estimator is proposed that offers good performance.
