TLDR
In this paper, the authors describe the EM algorithm for finding the parameters of a mixture of Gaussian densities and a hidden Markov model (HMM) for both discrete and Gaussian mixture observation models.
Abstract
We describe the maximum-likelihood parameter estimation problem and how the ExpectationMaximization (EM) algorithm can be used for its solution. We first describe the abstract form of the EM algorithm as it is often given in the literature. We then develop the EM parameter estimation procedure for two applications: 1) finding the parameters of a mixture of Gaussian densities, and 2) finding the parameters of a hidden Markov model (HMM) (i.e., the Baum-Welch algorithm) for both discrete and Gaussian mixture observation models. We derive the update equations in fairly explicit detail but we do not prove any convergence properties. We try to emphasize intuition rather than mathematical rigor.

Human Promoters Are Intrinsically Directional

TL;DR: It is shown that the human basal RNA polymerase II transcriptional machinery and core promoter are inherently unidirectional and that reverse-oriented transcripts originate from their own cognate reverse-directed core promoters.

Rosette Tracker: An Open Source Image Analysis Tool for Automatic Quantification of Genotype Effects

TL;DR: Rosette Tracker is introduced, a new open source image analysis tool for evaluation of plant-shoot phenotypes that allows us to simultaneously quantify plant growth, photosynthesis, and leaf temperature-related parameters through the analysis of visual, chlorophyll fluorescence, and/or thermal infrared time-lapse sequences.

Fingerprint recognition by combining global structure and local cues

TL;DR: This paper proposes a novel representation for fingerprints which includes both minutiae and model-based orientation field, and shows that the global orientation field is beneficial to the alignment of the fingerprints which are either incomplete or poor-qualitied.

Motion capture based human motion recognition and imitation by direct marker control

TL;DR: A Cartesian control approach is proposed in which a set of control points on the humanoid is selected and the robot is virtually connected to the measured marker points via translational springs, which allows to make the robot follow the marker points without the need of explicitly computing inverse kinematics.
