Abstract
A gas scintillation proportional counter has been constructed for use in detecting subkiloelectron-volt X-rays from cosmic sources. Over a sensitive area of 5 cm2, this instrument has a measured energy resolution of 85 eV (FWHM) at 149 eV. This is significantly better than similarly sized solid state detectors. Rise-time discrimination is used both to reject space background and to reduce low energy noise below 50 eV. The development of an imaging capability for this instrument is discussed.

- 01 Apr 1981 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered two continua and a few energy transfer phenomena associated with the process of light production, and the relevance of these processes to control the spectral distribution of the photons, and consequently to its detection, and their interest for the time characteristics and the energy resolution capabilities of detecting devices.

New approaches to spectroscopy and imaging of ultrasoft-to-hard X-rays

TL;DR: In this paper, the use of low-pressure multistep gaseous electron multipliers was proposed for X-ray spectroscopy and imaging, based on low pressure multi-stage GEM for counting singleelectron clusters induced in the gas.

The nature of the light produced inside a gas scintillation proportional counter

TL;DR: The emission spectrum of the ultra-violet light produced by a xenon gas scintillation counter has been experimentally determined in this paper, and the continuous spectrum peak intensity occurs around 1670 A. The production mechanism is discussed and probably molecular in origin.
