TLDR
This paper shows the existence of one implementation of a repeated median filter which achieves the same degree of smoothing but consistently yield less edge distortion for binary images and demonstrates that the algorithm yields an output image which is significantly closer to the original image than the outputs of the repeated standard or regular recursive algorithms.

Optimization of Image Processing in Video-based Traffic Monitoring

TL;DR: A burst noise eliminating algorithm that uses several continuous frames to wipe off sudden noise is put forward, and an integrated optimized solution on traffic monitoring system is achieved by making a tradeoff between time and effect.

A Separable Median Filter for Image Noise Smoothing

TL;DR: It is shown that the separable filter has a much simpler implementation in real-time hardware (at video rates, for example) and its effectiveness in smoothing noise and its behavior with edges are characterized and compared with those of the two-dimensional median filter.

The Effect of Median Filtering on Edge Estimation and Detection

TL;DR: Noise images prefiltered by median filters defined with a variety of windowing geometries are used to support the analysis and it is found that median prefiltering improves the performance of both thresholding and zero-crossing based edge detectors.
