TLDR
In this paper, a Slater-Koster-type simplified tight-binding theory is applied to the analysis of electronic states of ordered adlayers on single-crystal surfaces and the effect of spin-orbit coupling is introduced by using Pauli spinors.

Xenon adsorption on palladium. I. The homogeneous (110), (100), and (111) surfaces

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the face specificity of xenon adsorption on macroscopic palladium single crystal surfaces and found that the binding energies of the Xe (5p3/2,1/2) photoemission peaks (in the limit of zero coverage) on the three Pd surfaces obey the relationship EVB, 0=EFB,0+φc, where EVB 0 and EFB 0 denote the binding energy with respect to the vacuum and Fermi level, respectively, and φc is the clean substrate work

UV photoemission from physisorbed atoms and molecules: Electronic binding energies of valence levels in mono- and multilayers

TL;DR: In this article, the binding energy shifts up to 3 eV were explained by work function changes of the substrate onto which the gas is physisorbed, and it was shown that for the investigated gases the binding energies referred to the vacuum level is an atomic or molecular property which is independent of substrate to a first approximation.

Photoelectron spin-polarization spectroscopy: a new method in adsorbate physics

TL;DR: In this paper, the energy-, angle-, and spin-resolved photoemission results from adsorbates are discussed and a detailed discussion is given of line positions and ESP when going from a commensurate overlayer via an incommensurate monolayer and multilayers of different thickness onto a 3D rare-gas crystal.

Chapter 7: The Local Work Function of Thin Metal Films: Definition and Measurement

TL;DR: In this paper, the photoemission of adsorbed xenon (PAX) was used to measure local work functions on an atomic scale, which is the difference in potential energy between an electron at the Fermi and the vacuum level.

Angle-resolved photoemission of xenon adsorbed on Pt(111): The (√3 × √3)R30° commensurate layer

TL;DR: The 2D band structure of the commensurate (√3 × √3)R30° xenon overlayer adsorbed on Pt(111) has been determined in this article.
