A study of flame retarded polymers by thermal methods
TLDR
The use of molybdenum trioxide as a flame retardant in halogen-containing polyester resins has been studied as mentioned in this paper, and it has been shown that MoO 3 has a condensed phase mechanism, to increase the number of decomposition steps, to produce more char, and to alter the structure of the char.About:

An Investigation of Inorganic Tin Flame Retardants Which Suppress Smoke and Carbon-Monoxide Emission from Burning Brominated Polyester Resins
TL;DR: In this article, the results obtained clearly show that zinc hydroxystannate (ZnSn(OH)6) and zinc stannate(ZnsnO3) impart beneficial properties to the polyesters in terms of flame retardancy and smoke/carbon monoxide suppression, and the improvements in performance are, in general, superior to those exhibited by tin (IV) oxide or antimony (III) oxide.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inorganic tin compounds as flame retardants and smoke suppressants for polyester thermosets
TL;DR: In this paper, the fire retardant action of inorganic tin additives in polyester resin thermosets cross-linked with styrene has been investigated, and the interaction between the tin compounds and the halogens introduced into the polymer structure using halogen-containing reactive monomers has been discussed.

The effect of zinc hydroxystannate and zinc stannate on the fire properties of polyester resins containing additive-type halogenated flame retardants.
TL;DR: Zinc hydroxystannate and zinc stannate (ZS) have been found to be effective flame retardants and smoke suppressants in unsaturated polyester resins when used in conjunction with additive-type halogenated compounds such as chlorinated paraffin wax and decabromodiphenyl oxide as mentioned in this paper.

Zinc hydroxystannate: A combined flame retardant and smoke suppressant for halogenated polyesters
P.A. Cusack,M.S. Heer,A.W. Monk +2 more
TL;DR: Zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) has been found to exhibit exceptional flame-, smoke and toxic gas-retardant properties in unsaturated polyester resins based on the reactive halogenated compounds, chlorendic anhydride (CA) or dibromoneopentylglycol (DBNPG) as discussed by the authors.

A comparison of the fire-retardant properties of zinc hydroxystannate and antimony trioxide in brominated polyester resins containing inorganic fillers
R.S. Bains,P.A. Cusack,A.W. Monk +2 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the fire-retardant properties of zinc hydroxystannate, relative to those of antimony trioxide, in resins based on the bromine source, DBNPG, containing various inorganic fillers.

Flame retardant synergism between molybdenum and halogen‐containing compounds in unsaturated polysters
TL;DR: Oxygen index results for a series of unsaturated polysters, containing molybdenum oxide and various halogenated compounds, have provided definite evidence for some form of flame retardant synergistic effect between MDE and halogen.

Flammability of plastics II. Effect of additives on the flame
G. S. Learmonth,D. G. Thwaite +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, setchkin ignition tests and candle burning tests have been used to provide a numerical index of the effect of flame retardant agent on polyesters, and experimental details for a number of commercial halogenated retardants, which were tested, are given and some conclusions about the nature of their action.

Combustion propagation through solid materials I—downward propagation of smouldering along a thin vertical sheet of paper
TL;DR: In this article, the velocity v of combustion propagation perpendicular to the fire front was observed in a large chamber of temperature T a with strips of breadth b and thickness d. The results were summarized and an experimental formula for v in terms of b, d and T a was obtained.
