TLDR
There are very small variations in lambda max for all four carotenoids between hexane and methanol, due to differences in molar extinction coefficients.

A fluorometric method for measurement of peroxyl radical scavenging activities of lipophilic antioxidants

TL;DR: This fluorometric method is suitable for measurement of activities of antioxidants in an organic lipid environment and a liposomal medium and beta-carotene showed an antioxidant activity which is a factor of two greater than that of alpha-tocopherol in the DOPC system.
Journal ArticleDOI

Carotenoid composition in the green microalga Chlorococcum

TL;DR: The carotenoid composition in cells of a ketocarotenoids-producing alga, Chlorococcum, was investigated by high-performance liquid chromatgraphy (HPLC).
Journal ArticleDOI

Zeaxanthin in combination with ascorbic acid or α-tocopherol protects ARPE-19 cells against photosensitized peroxidation of lipids

TL;DR: It was found that zeaxanthin-supplemented cells, in the presence of either alpha-tocopherol or ascorbic acid, were significantly more resistant to photoinduced oxidative stress, indicating the importance of the antioxidant interaction in efficient protection of cell membranes against oxidative damage induced by photosensitized reactions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Role of the photosynthetic electron transfer chain in electrogenic activity of cyanobacteria.

TL;DR: It is proposed that in cyanobacteria, electrogenic activity may represent a form of overflow metabolism to protect cells under high-intensity light and expands knowledge into biologically based mechanisms for harnessing solar energy.

Actions of carotenoids in biological systems

TL;DR: A chronology of key events and scientific discoveries that led to the development of the anti-freeze-like properties of polymethine, as well as some of the misconceptions about these properties, are summarized.

Carotenoids in the human macula and whole retina.

TL;DR: The method presented in this study will facilitate quantitative investigations of the association between carotenoid levels and health and disease of the retina, and some older individuals show very high whole retinaCarotenoids have been proposed to be potent antioxidants, protecting membrane lipids from toxic peroxidation reactions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Simultaneous determination of retinol, α-tocopherol and β-carotene in serum by isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography

TL;DR: In this paper, a reverse-phase column was used with a mobile phase of acetonitrile-methanol-dichloromethane (70:10:20, v/v/v) and a flow-rate of 1.2 ml/min.
Journal Article

Simultaneous determination of retinol, tocopherols, carotenes and lycopene in plasma by means of high-performance liquid chromatography on reversed phase.

TL;DR: A method for laboratory routine is reported to separate simultaneously retinol, tocopherols, alpha- andbeta-carotene, lycopene and beta-cryptoxanthin in human plasma or serum by HPLC on reversed phase starting from one extract.
